Cristiaan Huygens

At the time Christiaan Huygens wrote those words, intellectuals in Europe were still arguing over the Copernican and Aristotelian models of the universe. Huygens, unlike many of his colleagues in the 17th century, was convinced that the Copernican view was completely accepted by all astronomers except those who "were a bit slow-witted or under the superstitions imposed by merely human authority." Christiaan Huygens was a contemporary of Robert Hooke, Anton van Leeuwenhoek, Jan Vermeer, and Isaac Newton. He studied any and all areas in science that interested him. From intensive observations of the microscopic world using a modified and more powerful version of Leeuwenhoek's "viewing glass" to the identification of the rings of Saturn and a confirmation of Hooke's observation of Jupiter's Great Red Spot, from the invention of the pendulum clock which allowed mariners to reasonably measure longitude to an elegant and comprehensive explanation of the wave theory of light; Huygens was perhaps the last great scientist who was truly comfortable in all areas of mathematics and science.

ESA’s probe on board the NASA/ESA/ASI Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn is named after the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens, who discovered Titan in 1655.
Born in 1629, Huygens came from a wealthy and well-connected Dutch family, who were traditionally in the diplomatic service to the House of Orange. As a young boy he already showed promise in mathematics and drawing. Descartes used to correspond with Huygens's grandfather and, impressed with the boy's early efforts at geometry, he was a great influence on Huygens. In 1645 he went to the University of Leiden to study mathematics and law. Two years later he went to the College of Breda.
Saturn's rings contain ice and dust Shortly after Galileo had first used a telescope for astronomical purposes, many other scientists decided to use this new instrument to perform their own studies. Many realised immediately that the improvement of the quality of the telescope could mean the chance to make history in astronomy.

Christiaan Huygens (April 14, 1629 - June 8, 1695)
Born in The Hague in 1629, Christiaan Huygens was a famous Dutchman for his development of advanced pendulum clocks (1659). He also invented an improved type of 2-lense eyepieces (1703), now named after him, and constructed very long air telescopes of up to 250 feet focal length. With these, he made important discoveries such as Jupiter's equatorial bulge, the polar caps of and a dark surface feature, later named Syrtis Major, on Mars. He discovered Saturn's satellite Titan (March 25, 1655) and was the first to clearly see its rings and to explain their appearance over time (1655-59). In 1656 he independently discovered the Orion Nebula M42 and made detailed studies and sketches of this object, including the discovery of three stars of the Trapezium cluster. He visited London in 1665 and was made a member of the Royal Society. On invitation of the French King Louis XIV, he came to Paris in 1666 and became a founding member of the Academie Royale des Sciences (Royal Academy of Sciences) where he worked with G.D. Cassini

Huygens, Christiaan (1629-1695)
Dutch physicist and astronomer who discovered Titan , in 1655, and determined that Saturn has rings. He also figured in one of the great unsung moments in planetary exploration when at 7 p.m. on November 28, 1659, he sketched a feature - a dark triangular patch - on the surface of Mars which he had just seen through his modest telescope. Eventually, it came to be known as Syrtis Major , the "Great Marsh", and for many years was presumed to be some kind of watery body. The significance of its sighting lay in the fact that, whereas the large bright and dark areas on the Moon had been visible for all to see from prehistoric times and Galileo had telescopically discovered the Great Red Spot on Jupiter (an atmospheric feature), Syrtis Major was the first permanent marking to be glimpsed on the surface of another planet. Huygens quickly used his discovery to demonstrate that the Martian day - the time it takes Mars to spin once around on its axis - is similar in length to our own. With his brother, Constantijn Huygens (1628-1697), he built tubeless telescopes supported by cables of very long focal length to reduce the problem of

Christiaan Huygens
Born: 14 April 1629 in The Hague, Netherlands
Died: 8 July 1695 in The Hague, Netherlands
In 1656 Christiaan Huygens patented the first pendulum clock, which greatly increased the accuracy of time measurement. Christiaan Huygens came from an important Dutch family. His father Constantin Huygens had studied natural philosophy and was a diplomat. It was through him that Christiaan was to gain access to the top scientific circles of the times. In particular Constantin had many contacts in England and corresponded regularly with Mersenne and was a friend of Descartes. Tutored at home by private teachers until he was 16 years old, Christiaan learned geometry, how to make mechanical models and social skills such as playing the lute. His mathematical education was clearly influenced by Descartes who was an occasional visitor at the Huygens' home and took a great interest in the mathematical progress of the young Christiaan. Christiaan Huygens studied law and mathematics at the University of Leiden from 1645 until 1647. Van Schooten tutored him in mathematics while he was in Leiden. From 1647 until 1649 he continued to study law and mathematics but now at the College of Orange at Breda. Here he was fortunate to have another skilled teacher of mathematics, John Pell. Through his father's contact with Mersenne, a correspondence between Huygens and Mersenne began around this time. Mersenne challenged Huygens to solve a number of problems including the shape of the rope supported from its ends. Although he failed at this problem he did solve the related problem of how to hang weights on the rope so that it hung in a parabolic shape.
