Hurwitz polynomial
A Hurwitz polynomial is a polynomial whose coefficients are positive real numbers and whose zeros are located in the left half-plane of the complex plane , that is, the real part of every zero is negative. One sometimes uses the term Hurwitz polynomial simply as a (real or complex) polynomial with all zeros in the left-half plane (i.e., a Hurwitz stable polynomial ). These polynomials are named after Adolf Hurwitz A simple example of a Hurwitz polynomial is the following:
x x
The only real solution is −1, as it factors to:

Collected Works in Mathematics and Statistics
This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews. Alumni Organization: The Hurwitz Society Adolf Hurwitz In 1977 the many positive aspects emerging from the long years of fruitful contact between alumni and members of the department gave rise to an idea: a society should be founded, dedicated to the fostering of relations between alumni, students and academic staff. A namesake presented itself in the person of one of the most successful students of the foundation period at the Mathematics Institute of the Munich University of Technology: Adolf Hurwitz, brought at the invitation of his teacher, Felix Klein, and then bound by a lifelong friendship with David Hilbert and Hermann Minkowski. As professor of mathematics at the ETH Zurich, Hurwitz exerted a decisive influence on Albert Einstein. In October 1997 the idea became reality. On the initiative of Prof. Dr. Armin Leutbecher 35 friends and patrons joined forces at the founders’ meeting. The new society was titled The Hurwitz Society for the Promotion of Mathematics at the Munich University of Technology. The society’s activities were met with acclaim, the number of members has meanwhile reached well over 120.

Reviewed by Andrew Leahy
Pioneers of Representation Theory: Frobenius, Burnside, Schur, and Brauer by Charles W. Curtis is not a book I'd recommend to many people, but there are certain segments of the mathematical community for whom this book is a must-read. Curtis' book is the fifteenth in a series of history of mathematics books published jointly by the American Mathematical Society and the London Mathematical Society. Its goal is to acquaint the reader with the history of the theory of representations of finite groups through a detailed analysis of the major papers of the founders of the discipline (Frobenius, Burnside, Schur, and Brauer) and other mathematicians. The book follows the development of this twentieth century field of mathematics in more-or-less chronological order, beginning with a chapter on the pre-requisite mathematics of the nineteenth century. A chapter each is then alloted to the turn-of-the-century work of Frobenius and Burnside and an additional two chapters apiece are devoted to the later work of Schur and Brauer. There are parts of the book that will appeal to any reader with an interest in the history of mathematics. For instance, there are biographies of each of the major contributors at the beginnings of the chapters, and numerous smaller biographical sketches are scattered throughout the text. There are also revealing glimpses into the mathematical culture of the early twentieth century found in the numerous citations from the correspondence between these men. In one example, describing an exchange between Ferdinand Frobenius and Adolf Hurwitz, Curtis notes:

Hilbert I. Introduction
II. Biography
David Hilbert was born on January 23, 1862 in Konigsberg, Prussia, now Kaliningrad, Russia. His father, Otto Hilbert, was a city judge, a very respectable position in a small city. Constance Reid indicates that Hilbert largest influence came from his mother Maria, "an unusual woman... interested in philosophy and astronomy and fascinated by prime numbers." As a young boy, Hilbert quickly found that mathematics came very easily to him. Since the gymnasium he attended emphasized language, particularly Latin, over math and science, he put aside his love for mathematics temporarily and concentrated on his weaker subjects, vowing to return to mathematics as soon as possible. He attended the university in Konigsberg, studying under Heinrich Weber, the only full professor of mathematics in Konigsberg. He visited the university in Heidelberg for a semester to hear lectures on differential equations by Leonard Fuchs. In 1882, Hermann Minkowski, a fellow student at Konigsberg, won the prestigious Grand Prix des Sciences Mathmatiques of the Paris Academy at the age of 17. Hearing of this unprecedented accomplishment, Hilbert quickly became friends with the shy Minkowski. In 1884, Adolf Hurwitz became an Extraordinarius, or assistant professor, at Konigsberg. They developed the habit of taking daily walks "to the apple tree... precisely at five" to discuss philosophy, literature, women, and, above all, mathematics. The three had formed a friendship that would last to their graves.

History of Control
Control Systems Timeline
A modern view of control systems is one of using feedback to control a system regardless of any external disturbances. It is this durability that explains why control systems are all around us in modern technology. Control Systems have widespread applications in a number of different fields however they are barely noticed, but without them many of today’s technological advancements would not be possible. They are found in our homes, cars, factories, communication, medical, transport, military, and space systems to name a few. The evolution of the control system is a long and interesting one, dating back to around 300 B.C. From then on control systems have played an essential part in the development of wide variety of technology. "One interesting aspect in the history of technology is the way in which an innovation was developed. In many cases, inventions were the result of numerous people making small advances until a critical point was reached". (Bernstein and Bushnell 2002 p22) ([38]). There are many examples of this throughout the history of control with inventions being improved and adapted for different tasks. A couple of these examples are listed below:
  • The centrifugal governor began in the works of windmills, but found itself in the control of steam engines.
