Ursinus College library: 814.54/Sa21 6 May 2004 Richard P. Richter the "globalization" homepage said Edward W. Said slammed the views on Islam expressed by Bernard Lewis and V. S. Naipaul After 9-11, my study of globalization abruptly turned toward the "engagement" of the West with Islam. It seemed clear to me that the diplomatic and military initiatives precipitated by the violence visited on the American mainland would take priority over the economic and cultural spearheads of globalization. In taking that turn, I grabbed readily identifiable resources. They included the imaginative reportage of novelist V.S. Naipaul A Way in the World and Beyond Belief and the writings of Bernard Lewis My early perceptions of "Islam & the West" consequently took shape under the influence of these two writers. It was salutary, therefore, that I ran across vigorous objection to them both in essays by the late Edward W. Said, who defined "Orientalism" for us in the 1970s. Said outspokenly defied Western scholarly formulations of his native grounds in the Middle East. He took exception to the views of both Naipaul and Lewis in essays over the years. To balance my evolving understanding, I record the following notes about several of those essays.

Pier into the Past By Wayne Edward Sherwood Article as appeared in Huntington Beach Magazine, Vol. 1 No. 2 Today, many of the residents of Huntington Beach feel their world famous pier has always been there and in fact, the first pier was built before Huntington Beach was even an official town. In 1903 The Huntington Beach Company decided to build a pier at the end of Main Street. The pier was constructed completely of wood and extended out into the ocean 1000 feet. By 1909 when Huntington Beach finally incorporated the pier had already become a familiar sight to the citizens of the area. In the winter of 1912, the first, of several, damaging storms to strike the pier wrecked havoc on the wooden structure, knocking a large portion of it into the Pacific Ocean. But the residents of the growing community were not overly concerned because coincidentally the city council, at the time, was considering a measure to rebuilt the pier. By a popular vote, a $70,000 bond was approved and construction on the new pier began. This time the pier would be built out of concrete and extended to a length of 1350 feet. When it was dedicated in June of 1914 the Huntington Beach pier entered the record books as the longest, highest and only concrete pleasure pier in the United States.

NEW YORK A New York state appeals court ruling this January paved the way for the Huntington Free Library to find a new steward for its Native American collection, one of the largest in the world. On Tuesday, June 15, at the private library's red brick home in the Bronx, papers will be signed to transfer the collection to Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. The $2.5 million that the Huntington library will receive for the collection from Cornell will allow the library to remedy losses from a 15-year lawsuit over the ownership of the collection and return to its main mission of serving the Bronx community. Media are invited to attend the transfer signing, view selected items from the collection on June 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the Huntington Free Library, 9 Westchester Square, in the Bronx, and attend the reception that follows. Sarah E. Thomas, Cornell University Librarian, and Edward Morgan, Huntington Free Library president, will be available for questions and comments. The move, which will take place later this summer, will ensure that the collection stays in New York and remains accessible to students and researchers as well as the general public. The collection contains more than 40,000 volumes on the archaeology, ethnology and history of the native peoples of the Americas from the colonial period to the present. At Cornell University Library, the collection will be fully cataloged, with online records made available in national and international bibliographic databases. Over the coming years, Cornell also plans to digitize and make available on the Web some 1,300 rare books and monographs as well as approximately 100,000 pages of the Huntington's manuscript holdings.
