The Clash of Ignorance
by Edward W. Said
Samuel Huntington's article "The Clash of Civilizations?" appeared in the Summer 1993 issue of Foreign Affairs, where it immediately attracted a surprising amount of attention and reaction. Because the article was intended to supply Americans with an original thesis about "a new phase" in world politics after the end of the cold war, Huntington's terms of argument seemed compellingly large, bold, even visionary. He very clearly had his eye on rivals in the policy-making ranks, theorists such as Francis Fukuyama and his "end of history" ideas, as well as the legions who had celebrated the onset of globalism, tribalism and the dissipation of the state. But they, he allowed, had understood only some aspects of this new period. He was about to announce the "crucial, indeed a central, aspect" of what "global politics is likely to be in the coming years." Unhesitatingly he pressed on: "It is my hypothesis that the fundamental source of conflict in this new world will not be primarily ideological or primarily economic. The great divisions among humankind and the dominating source of conflict will be cultural. Nation states will remain the most powerful actors in world affairs, but the principal conflicts of global politics will occur between nations and groups of different civilizations. The clash of civilizations will dominate global politics. The fault lines between civilizations will be the battle lines of the future."

Photograph by Edward Weston This superb collection today remains an important legacy created by a master photographer at the height of his career. It is also one of the gems of The Huntington's extensive collections on the history of the American West. Although several small exhibitions of works from the Guggenheim collection have been mounted at The Huntington since the gift arrived in the 1940s, no large exhibit has ever been organized. As such, The Huntington's Weston collection has remained a hidden jewel, little known even to historians of photography. The Guggenheim prints are at the heart of The Huntington's Weston collection. Liberated financially for the first time in his life, Weston sought, as he stated in his Guggenheim application, "to continue an epic series of photographs of the West, begun about 1929; [including] a range from satires on advertising to ranch life, from beach kelp to mountains." The purchase of a car allowed him to travel through California, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, and north to Oregon and Washington. Classic images of Lake Tenaya, the Mojave Desert, Yosemite, and Death Valley, among others, are found throughout the collection.

every Muslim backs bin Laden and hates the West, or "Islamic civilization" does not exist. There is something sad, truth be told, and a little desperate about Said's essay: It reads like the flailings of an intellectual who realizes, too late, that history is passing him by. He lashes out indecorously, calling Huntington "a clumsy writer and inelegant thinker" — an odd accusation from a essayist whose prose often reads like something badly translated from an obscure Eastern European tongue (A typically unsuccessful Said sentence: "Uncountable are the editorials in every American and European newspaper and magazine of note adding to this vocabulary of gigantism and apocalypse, each use of which is plainly designed not to edify but to inflame the reader's indignant passion as a member of the 'West,' and what we need to do.") Later, he takes a swipe at Bernard Lewis, author of the prescient 1991 essay "The Roots of Muslim Rage," calling him a "veteran Orientalist" whose "ideological colors" are obvious — "Orientalist" being, of course, the term that Said himself invented to tar any westerner with the temerity to study the Near East. Meanwhile, lacking any actual evidence to prove his points, he fumbles for bizarre anecdotes, citing Dante's placement of Mohammed in "the very heart of his

    33. Huntingdtonshire And Loxley, Of Robin Hood And Yorkshire
There are three places with the name huntington, the name used as the Earldom of the Oxon., was created earl of huntington by edward III of England,
    http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Lane/8771/loxley.html
    Loxley
Locksleah, Locksley, Loxley are all synonymous with the claimed place-name for the birth-place of Robin. Surely then following naming patterns his name would have been Robin or Robert de Loxley?
The Geste gives Robin's birthplace as Loxley. There is a Loxley in Warwickshire and one in Yorkshire. Locksley/Loxley near Sheffield is reputed to be his birthplace.
However there is no corroborating written record of this. If his name was Robert de Hode, could he not just as easily have been a native of Hodresfeld (Huddersfield)?
Just as in the words neighbourhood, knighthood or priesthood, could not the word "hood' represent a "state of being". To confuse the issue a gravestone reputed to be a copy of Robin's grave from Kirklees is known from Loxley in Warwickshire , with a Lombardic style or fleuretty cross on the capping stone.
A very similar style grave cover was drawn by John Throsby from St. Anne's Well in Nottingham which could have been sold to the Nottingham tourist traders by the Armitage family of Kirklees Loxley village in Yorkshire lies on the River Loxley about three miles from the centre of present day Sheffield near the site of a Roman road from Doncaster to Chapel-en-le-Frith in Derbyshire ("the road to nowhere"). PRESTON, Edward Verrance, Civil War Veteran, Insurance Official.
Major Edward Verrance Preston, general manager of agencies of The Travelers Insurance Company of Hartford, is one of the best known insurance men in Connecticut, his native State. He was born June 1, 1837, in Willington, son of Joshua and Caroline (Eldredge) Preston. Major Preston was born under the handicap of having to maintain the prestige of a distinguished ancestry, which has been traced back through a number of families to early Colonial days. Major Preston has made good, not only as a volunteer when the unity of the nation was threatened, but in the more peaceful paths of business, and as a worker in the cause of religion, in which his family through many generations has been prominent.
Children of Judge John: Rev. John; Richard. his heir, and a daughter. The American families are undoubtedly descended from some branch of this family. The Connecticut family has been traced to George Preston, of Valley Field, who was created a baron of Nova Scotia in 1537, through his son William, who died April 23, 1585: his son John; his son William, the Connecticut immigrant, came in 1635, died in 1639, leaving land in Yorkshire. whence he had come to this country.
Major Preston is a strong and active Republican, and has served in the Common Council and as a member of the board of aldermen.

E dward Weston (1886-1958) is renowned as one of the masters of twentieth-century photography. His name evokes images of anthropomorphic still lifes, striking nudes, dramatic coastal landscapes, and stark dunes that embody the brilliant compositions, sharp focus, and exquisite tonalities of the Straight Photography movement. Weston's belief in the purity of natural form and the transcendent beauty in the commonplace led him to create some of the most indelible images in the history of the medium. This exhibition celebrates a critical chapter in Edward Weston's remarkable career. In the early 1940s, Weston selected and printed five hundred of his masterworks for The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. This extraordinary gift, the first by the photographer to an institution, was underwritten by the Guggenheim Foundation which had sponsored his photographic odyssey through California and the American West in 1937 and 1938, regarded by Weston as the most productive and satisfying years of his life. Selections from the Huntington's collection are supplemented by key private and public loans in order to convey the breadth of Weston's enduring vision. A key group are on loan from the comprehensive collection of Michael P. Mattis and Judith G. Hochberg who both consider Weston the "Picasso of photography" and have collected his work in depth since the 1980s.
