In its most general sense, computer science CS ) is the study of computation , both hardware and software. NICHOLAS J. HIGHAM - brief biography Nick Higham is Richardson Professor of Applied Mathematics in the School of Mathematics, University of Manchester. His degrees (BA 1982, MSc 1983, PhD 1985) are from the University of Manchester, and he has held visiting positions at Cornell University and the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, University of Minnesota. He is Director of Research within the School of Mathematics, Director of the Manchester Institute for Mathematical Sciences (MIMS), and Head of the Numerical Analysis Group. He holds a prestigious Royal Society-Wolfson Research Merit Award (2003-2008). He is best known for his research on the accuracy and stability of numerical algorithms, and the second edition of his 700-page monograph on this topic was published by SIAM in 2002. He has more than 70 refereed publications on topics such as rounding error analysis, linear systems, least squares problems, matrix functions and nonlinear matrix equations, condition number estimation, and generalized eigenvalue problems. His research has been supported by grants from EPSRC and by fellowships from the Nuffield Foundation, the Royal Society and the Leverhulme Trust. Higham is a member of the editorial boards of the journals Linear Algebra and Its Applications, SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, IMA Journal of Numerical Analysis, Numerical Algorithms, and Foundations of Computational Mathematics. He is also (Founding) Editor-in-Chief of the SIAM Fundamentals of Algorithms book series. He has served on the SIAM Council and on the Board of Directors of the International Linear Algebra Society, and as Chair of the SIAM Activity Group on Linear Algebra. He is a frequent invited speaker at international conferences and serves on the (permanent) organizing committee of the Householder Symposia on Numerical Linear Algebra. Higham has contributed software to LAPACK and the NAG library, and has written numerous M-files included with the MATLAB distribution. Honours include the Alston S. Along with a team of colloborating scientists at Oak Ridge National Lab, Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, and the University of Bristol (UK), Andrew won the 1998 Gordon Bell Prize for the fastest parallel application, which modeled 1,024 atoms of a metallic magnet. Although the team won for their 657 Gigaflop/s performance level, they subsequently were able to run the application at more than one Teraflop/s. Andrew has a B.S. in theoretical physics and astronomy from the University of Glasgow and a Ph.D. in statistical physics from the University of Edinburgh. For three years he was an employee of Cray Research in Lausanne, Switzerland, developing parallel codes and algorithms for materials science applications on the Cray T3D parallel computer.

Olga Taussky-Todd August 30, 1906 - October 7, 1995 Remembering Olga Taussky Todd Written by Chandler Davis, University of Toronto Reprinted from the AWM Newsletter, January-February, 1996, Volume 26, #1, with permission of the author and the Association of Women in Mathematics. The field she is most identified with which might be called "linear algebra and applications" through "real and complex matrix theory" would be preferred by some did not exist in the 1930's, despite the textbook by C.C. MacDuffee. Her stature in that field is the very highest, as was palpable in the standing ovation after her survey talk at the second Raleigh conference in 1982. In tracing her professional development, I will say a little about how the field came together. Like other Jews in Germany and Austria, Olga Taussky would have had to leave by about 1938. Some delayed as long as they could; some, too long. She left in 1934. She moved, after a year at Bryn Mawr, to Girton College Cambridge, and remained in England until after World War II. It is amusing to hear the story of her job interview, where a member of the committee asked her, with motivation we can imagine, "I see you have written several joint papers. Were you the senior or the junior author?" Another member of the committee was G.H. Hardy, who interjected, "That is a most improper question. Do not answer it!" At another interview she was asked, "I see you have collaborated with some men, but with no women. Why?" Olga replied that that was why she was applying for a position in a women's college!

As you will see, it was my late wife Olga Taussky who should have talked, but I lost her seven years ago. When I chose my title, I soon found that there was a remarkable parallelism between ETH and the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), and so I arranged a surveying with pages devoted to ETH and NBS which will be supplemented by more detail as necessary. Olga and Professor Stiefel (1929-1932) Although Olga's thesis was on Algebraic Number Theory (Classfield Theory), she had also obtained results in Topological Algebra and approached Professor Heinz Hopf for advice on how to prove a converse of one of them. He told her to get in touch with Stiefel. This meeting only took place twenty years later at the NBS Institute for Numerical Analysis at the University of California at Los Angeles (NBS-INA-UCLA).

New Mexico State University Department of Mathematical Sciences Annual Report for 1964-65 SECTION A Staff meetings were held at least twice each month and lasted an average of one and one-half hours. Some time was devoted to routine departmental business at each staff meeting. One major item dealt with in a number of meetings was the search for new staff. Another major item of business in practically every staff meeting was an overall review of the department activities. This review was necessary since the growth of the department has made it necessary to assign to committees responsibility for many activities that could formerly be handled by the department head and the department staff as a whole.
