On the 29th the Revelation given to Joseph Smith in Nauvoo July 12, 1843 on the subject of the marriage covenant was for the first time read publicly to the saints and made public to the world. On the 16th of October, 1852, that portion of the Elders whose mission required them to travel westward met in council and received our blessings, and entered into arrangements for starting. The following blessing I received under the hands of Jedediah M. Grant, Wilford Woodruff and Joseph Young: "Brother William. We lay our hands upon thy head in the name of Jesus Christ, for thou art one of the anointed of the Lord. Thou hast received thy holy annointing in the holy Temple. We lay our hands upon your head and confirm all the blessings of the endowments with all the power that has heretofore been conferred upon you. We again seal upon your head and we ask our Heavenly Father that his Spirit may indite our hearts to pronounce upon you such blessings as your heart desires, and indeed, we say upon you that all your heart desires in righteousness before God, shall be given to you. George William Horner
At the Annual Dinner, November 1999, I was handed a letter from Mr. Brian Merton Gould of Norwich. He wanted any information or background on the school career of George Horner in the late 20s/early 30s. After a little search in the school magazines of the period I was able to establish a few details of Horner's School Certificate results and a record of his working first in the Taunton Public Library, where he passed the first of the Library Association's exams 'with Distinction' before moving to London and work at the Fulham Library. There, the trail seems to grow cold although it is possible that there is some record of his further career in the annals of the old London Branch (if they exist). I also found that Horner had been 'assistant editor' to Mr. Mitford for his last few terms at Huish's. All this was duly passed to Mr Gould, with the comment '...Mitford, whom I remember as a fiery little Welshman and others remember as being handy with his fists'. (see Clem Nettell's memoir of the 1940's Mr Gould is quite excited by this piece of somewhat colourful background - 'short and vivid' he describes it - and has requested permission to include it in a second publication about his late friend. All being well, there will be more on this later on.

The nadir of B western film-making is often assigned to Victor Adamson, aka Denver Dixon or Art Mix or Al Mix. While Adamson did produce-direct-write some pretty downtrodden stuff starring the likes of Buffalo Bill, Jr., Wally Wales and Buddy Roosevelt, the distinction of creating the worst B western programmers might belong to Robert J. Horner. But to reduce any arguments and ensure that both are treated equally, the prestigious Old Corral Bottom-Of-The-Barrel award is bestowed on both Horner and Adamson/Dixon.

William Buckland
From The Great Devonian Controversy by Martin J.S. Rudwick
William Buckland may not be a household name, but to dinosaur lovers the world over, he should be. Professor of Geology at Oxford, Buckland is responsible for the world's first description of a recognized dinosaur fossil, although the term "dinosaur" didn't exist at the time. In 1824, Buckland published Notice on the Megalosaurus or Great Fossil Lizard of Stonesfield In the same science meeting where he described Megalosaurus Buckland's discoveries in paleontology were as varied as they were distinguished. In 1822, in An Assemblage of Fossil Teeth and Bones , he described a feeding frenzy of ancient hyenas based on fossil remains. That same year he discovered an ancient human skeleton. He initially and correctly identified it as male, but later reversed the decision and proclaimed the skeleton not only female but also (perhaps in jest) a witch! After calling it the Red Witch, he finally gave the skeleton the more palatable name of the Red Lady of Paviland.

“Horner has produced a detailed, well-organized, and ably written treatment of the struggle over the right to carry concealed weapons in Missouri. He has placed this controversy in the context of Missouri state politics and has provided insight into how propositions become law. Importantly, Horner has shown the influence of lobbying in the legislative process, analyzing with care the role of the NRA in fighting for conceal-and-carry and the role of those groups who opposed Laws.”— Lawrence O. Christensen When the Missouri state legislature overrode Governor Bob Holden’s veto in 2003 to make conceal-and-carry the law of the land, the Show-Me State became one of the last in the country to adopt this type of law. In fact, it took years of concerted effort on the part of pro-gun advocates to make this a reality. In Showdown in the Show-Me State , William Horner chronicles this complex and fascinating fight in clear, chronological order beginning with the first bill introduced into the Missouri General Assembly in 1992 and ending with the state supreme court’s decision in 2004 that Missouri’s constitution permitted the legislature to grant Missourians the right to carry concealed weapons.

[1] CRIMINAL LAW - ARRAIGNMENT AND PLEA - PLEA OF GUILTY - WITHDRAWAL - DISCRETION OF COURT. A motion to withdraw a plea of guilty is addressed to the sound discretion Of the trial court, whose ruling will not be disturbed except upon a showing of abuse thereof; and held in this case that the record sustains the trial court's denial of such a motion. [2] HOMICIDE - EVIDENCE - PREMEDITATION. Motive and prior conduct of a defendant is as much a part of the substantive evidence to show premeditation as is the immediate reflective deliberation which precedes the act itself. [3] SAME. A period of time long enough to form a deliberate intent to kill is sufficient to sustain a verdict finding premeditation if the thought and act do not occur instantaneously. [4] SAME. In a prosecution for murder, evidence reviewed and held sufficient to sustain a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree.

Congratulations!
Dr. Ed Marshall was elected to the American Public Health Association Executive Board at the APHA meeting in Boston in November. He is the first optometrist in the 128-year history of the APHA to be elected to the Executive Board. There were more than 13,000 public health officials at the meeting. There was a very nice full-page article on Dr. Marshall in the Dec. 4th AOA News. Congratulations to the Indianapolis Eye Care Center for receiving a special recognition award from the Department of Veterans Affairs for the work with the homeless veterans in the Indianapolis area. Antonio Turner and Michael Murray were December graduates of the Optician/Technician Program. At the AAO meeting in Orlando in December, Dr. Neil Pence was appointed to the Board of the International Association of Contact Lens Educators. He is also the Vice-Chair of the Association of Optometric Contact Lens Educators. He attended the executive committee meetings of both organizations held during the AAO annual meeting.
