    Abstract
'Composition and Sacrilege, a necessarily practical justification.'
The aim of this PhD by project is to draw out the problematic relationship between a fine art practice in sculpture and its necessary critical and theoretic discourse. The methods with which this relation is drawn out will be sculptural in as much as they will bring to bear a body of evidence, a body that will also figure itself in the form of textual analysis. In this respect, the 'practice' will not be positioned simply as the subject of the 'theory', but both will be taken as interdependent. This uniquely resourceful site of praxis will be animated then, with the problems of ethics and aesthetics; the project will aim not only to provide a self-reflective and historic account of this site of praxis, but will aim to originate its research from the studio context - it will commit acts of knowledge and prejudice judgements of value.
The anomalies, divergences and ruptures that occur within this contestation of praxis is what the project aims to draw in and unfold. They will be the project’s truth content, the conditions of its possibility, and the symptoms of its originality.

William G. Horner, p. 1452
WILLIAM G. HORNER is descended from one of the oldest pioneer families of Washington county, Penn., his grandfather, William Horner, having come hither from Adams county, Penn., in 1800, and passed the remainder of his life in agricultural pursuits. He died about the year 1860. Joseph Horner (son of William) was born in 1806, and grew to manhood on the home farm. He married Catherine Mitchell, who was also a native of Washington county, born August 25, 1817, and the young people settled on the home farm. The following children were born to their union: William G., Elizabeth B. (Mrs. Samuel Mitchell, of Piatt county, Ill.), Nancy C. (wife of David Templeton, of North Strabane township), Mary (Mrs. Abner Myers, of Somerset county, Penn.), Louisa (living at home), and Martha J., Sarah E. and Margaret (all three deceased). Mr. and Mrs. Horner were members of the Presbyterian Church. The father of this family died May 29, 1874, and the mother passed away April 30, 1887. William G. Horner was born September 16, 1834, on the home farm in North Strabane township. He was educated in the usual log-cabin country school of the vicinity, but has broadened his educational knowledge by observation and experience. He has always followed agricultural pursuits, and is the owner of a well-cultivated and productive farm, which is furnished with fine stock. He is an active politician, and has ever been a leader in all progressive movements of the community which tend to improve the general welfare. Mr. Horner has never married, but his maiden sister, who is living with him, assists in providing the comforts and luxuries of a pleasant home.

John Meirs Horner Autobiography Passengers of The Brooklyn, 1846 Passengers of steamer ... Chapman Duncan
Noe Valley John Meirs Horner was one of the Morman passengers on the Brooklyn who sailed into Yerba Buena in 1846 and help mold the early beginnings of the City as we know it today. Although his influences were greater in the East Bay and around San Jose, within San Francisco he was responsible for creating the current Noe Valley neighborhood. He purchased the area, known then as San Miguel Rancho, from Jose de Jesus Noe in 1853. This area is still named Horner's Addition by the city assessor's office. "In San Francisco county, we paid two hundred and eighty-five thousand dollars for five thousand two hundred and fifty acres of land adjoining the city of San Francisco, and expended nearly eight thousand dollars upon it in surveys, fences and other improvements. One thousand and fifty acres of these lands we surveyed and staked into streets, blocks, and lots, extending the streets of San Francisco over it. It is now, and has been for over thirty years, a part of that flourishing city." —John M. Horner Although the north-south streets were probably already named, he was probably responsible for the naming of these east-west streets (current street names in parantheses): John (22nd street)—his first name, Hill (Alvarado street), Horner (23rd street)—his last name
