William Horner 's father, also named William Horner, was from Ireland where from 1770 he travelled round preaching. John Wesley, a founder of Methodism, encouraged William Horner senior to come to England and join the Methodist Society as a minister. At this time Methodists were members of the Church of England, the break coming later in 1795. William junior, the subject of this biography, was educated at Kingswood School Bristol. At the almost unbelievable age of 14 he became an assistant master at Kingswood school in 1800 and headmaster four years later. He left Bristol and founded his own school in 1809; The Seminary at 27 Grosvenor Place in Bath. Horner is largely remembered only for the method, Horner's method, of solving algebraic equations ascribed to him by Augustus De Morgan and others. He published on the subject in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London in 1819, submitting his article on 1 July. But Fuller [7] has pointed out that, contrary to

At the almost unbelievable age of 14 he became an assistant master at Kingswood school in 1800 and headmaster 4 years later. He left Bristol and founded his own school in 1809 in Bath. After Horner died in 1837 his son, also called William, carried on running the school in Bath. 1834: Horner patents the "Daedatelum" or "Zoetrope", developed from Dr. Joseph Plateau's Phenakistiscope. The Zoetrope was a cylindrical toy through which one can see a picture move. The rotating drum has equally spaced peepholes on the outside, and a series of still images on the inside showing a figure in graduating stages of motion. As the drum spins (faster than 12 images per second), the dark frames of the still pictures disappear and the figure appears to move.

Civil War Honor Roll
Somerset County, PA was not directly in the line of fire during the Civil War but many of her sons valiantly served and died at Appomattax, Gettysburg, Antietam, and the Wilderness during one of our nations greatest internal conflicts. For an overview of the war and Somerset County's involvement, see "History of Bedford and Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania, Vol II, pp. 325-331, by William A. Welfley" The names that follow are taken from the November 1961 issue of the "Laurel Messenger". This list is only covers killed, wounded and missing in action it does not account for everyone who served from Somerset County. (Note: This information is from the monument erected in Somerset County. It has many misspellings and many soldiers names are missing from the panels.) Commemoration of the Dead In March of 1888, a funding committee was set up by R. P. Cummins Post No. 210, GAR, to secure the funds necessary to erect a monument to honor Somerset County's Civil War Veterans. The inscription on the statue reads, "To the Pepetual Memory of the Defenders of the Union. 1861-1865. Erected September 17, 1888, by the surviving soldiers and citizens of Somerset County." Horner, 1821-1975 Biographical Alfred Rives Shands, Jr., orthopedic surgeon, was born in 1899. He was the great grandson of physician William E. Horner (1793-1853). Shands attended the University of Virginia, receiving his A.B. in 1918 and M.D. in 1922. He and his wife, Elizabeth, had one son, Alfred. Shands died in 1981. Shands was an Instructor in Orthopedic Surgery at, first, Johns Hopkins University Medical School (1926-1927), then George Washington University Medical School (1927-1930). From 1930 to 1937, he was Associate Professor of Surgery in charge of Orthopedic Surgery at Duke University School of Medicine. He then came to Delaware to establish the Nemours Foundation, became its Medical Director, and was Surgeon inChief at the Alfred I. DuPont Institute. He was also a Visiting Professor in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Shands was elected to non resident fellowship in the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1941. He was also a member of the American Medical Association, the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, the American Orthopedic Association, and the Southern Surgical Association. Scope and contents This small collection of correspondence and related materials, 1821-1975, assembled by Alfred Rives Shands, Jr., documents his research on William E. Horner. The collection is divided into four series. Series 1 contains Shands' correspondence, 1948-1975, concerning the loan and ultimate disposition of a collection of Horner papers and relics at the University of Pennsylvania and Shands' attempt to publish Horner's 1821 European diary. Series 2 contains two printed items concerning Horner's life. Shands' typed transcript of Horner's 1821 diary is preserved in Series 3. The diary contains Horner's observations on life and conditions in England, the Netherlands, and France; Particular emphasis is placed on the anatomical collections and hospitals which Horner visited. Biography
William Edmonds Horner, anatomist, was born on 3 June 1793 in Warrenton, Va., to William and Mary (Edmonds) Horner. On 26 Oct. 1820 he married Elizabeth Welsh of Philadelphia; they had 10 children. He died in Philadelphia on 13 March 1853.
As a child, Horner was educated in the schools of Warrenton and Dumfries. He later studied medicine under John Spence and received his M.D. from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1814. While in medical school, the War of 1812 began and Horner took time away from his studies to serve a commission as Surgeon’s Mate in the U.S. Army. After the war ended, he resigned his commission and briefly set up private practice in Warrenton, but moved permanently to Philadelphia in 1816.
Horner spent his career at the University of Pennsylvania, where he held successive positions: Dissector (1816-1818), Demonstrator of Anatomy (1818-1820), Adjunct Professor of Anatomy (1820-1831), and Professor of Anatomy (1831-1853).
