World Scientists' Warning to Humanity
18 Nov, 1992. Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course. Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damage on the environment and on critical resources. If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms, and may so alter the living world that it will be unable to sustain life in the manner that we know. Fundamental changes are urgent if we are to avoid the collision our present course will bring about.
The Environment
The environment is suffering critical stress:
The Atmosphere
Stratospheric ozone depletion threatens us with enhanced ultra-violet radiation at the earth's surface, which can be damaging or lethal to many life forms. Air pollution near ground level, and acid precipitation, are already causing widespread injury to humans, forests and crops.
Water Resources
Heedless exploitation of depletable ground water supplies endangers food production and other essential human systems. Heavy demands on the world's surface waters have resulted in serious shortages in some 80 countries, containing 40% of the world's population. Pollution of rivers, lakes and ground water further limits the supply.
Oceans
Destructive pressure on the oceans is severe, particularly in the coastal regions which produce most of the world's food fish. The total marine catch is now at or above the estimated maximum sustainable yield. Some fisheries have already shown signs of collapse. Rivers carrying heavy burdens of eroded soil into the seas also carry industrial, municipal, agricultural, and livestock waste some of it toxic

Introduction
Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course. Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damage on the environment and on critical resources. If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms, and may so alter the living world that it will be unable to sustain life in the manner that we know. Fundamental changes are urgent if we are to avoid the collision our present course will bring about. The Environment
The environment is suffering critical stress: The Atmosphere
Water Resources
Oceans
Soil
Forests

Tropical rain forests, as well as tropical and temperate dry forests, are being destroyed rapidly. At present rates, some critical forest types will be gone in a few years, and most of the tropical rain forest will be gone before the end of the next century. With them will go large numbers of plant and animal species.

Subject: 3rd Parallel Circus
The 3rd Parallel Circus was held at IBM in Kingston on May 6-7. There
were no clowns nor elephant dropings but lots of good discussions on
parallel processing. Approximately 50 people attended during the two
days of the Circus. The first day, chaired by Gene Golub, was devoted
to linear algebra. Martin Schultz chaired the second day sessions
which finished up the linear algebra talks and covered particle methods.
Gene has set-up a NAnet address for the Parallel Circus so that comments,
questions, etc. can be sent to parallel_circus@na-net.stanford.edu. Following are some comments, a list of the talks and list of attendees. Any omissions or typos in names or addresses are unintentional; flames to Greg Astfalk Convex Computer Corp.

then each is a ``generalized'' polynomial map of ``degree'' at most In case and we show that if some is bounded on a set of positive inner Lebesgue measure, then it is a genuine polynomial function. Our main aim is to establish the stability of (in the sense of Ulam) in case is a Banach space.

Why Isn't There a Nobel Prize in Mathematics? by Peter Ross
When I was a student at a leading American university one of my mathematics
professors answered the above question in class. He claimed that the Swedish
mathematician Gosta Magnus Mittag-Leffler had run off with Alfred Nobel's
wife. Supposedly, later in revenge Nobel refused to endow one of his prizes
in mathematics. I loved repeating this juicy story, but my faith in it was
somewhat shaken when I found out that Nobel had never married! A Swedish
version of the story even made it into one of Howard Eves's collections of
mathematical anecdotes (p.13O of Mathematical Circles, Quadrants III, 1969). According to this version Mittag-Leffler, in the process of accumulating his

A Word about The Fields Medal
The Fields Medal is the highest scientific award for mathematicians and is presented every four years at the International Congress of Mathematicians. The mathematical equivalent in prestige to the Nobel Prize (there is no Nobel Prize in mathematics), it is awarded by a committee appointed by the International Mathematical Union every four years to one or more outstanding researchers. "Fields Medals" are offïcially called "International medals for outstanding discoveries in mathematics." The Fields Medal were first proposed at the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians in Toronto. Professor J.C. Fields, a Canadian mathematician who was secretary of the 1924 Congress, later donated funds establishing the medals which were then named in his honor. To encourage mathematical endeavor and encourage the field of mathematics, recipients must not be over 40 years of age in the year of the Congress. In 1966, it was agreed that in light of the great expansion of mathematical research, up to four medals could be awarded at each Congress. The inscription on the tablet reads: CONGREGATI EX TOTO ORBE MATHEMATICI OB SCRIPTA INSIGNIA TRIBUERE The translation means: "The mathematicians having congregated from the whole world awarded (this medal) because of outstanding written contributions." This year the International Conference of Mathematicians will announce two Fields Medals in the presence of 5000 mathematicians in Beijing, China on August 20, 2002.
