William Hopkins 's father was also named William Hopkins. Hopkins senior was a farmer, not in the sense of working on a farm but in the sense of owning a farm and employing others to do the hard work. William junior was supposed to follow in his father's footsteps so his education was not considered important. William showed little progress, particularly when he was taken to Norfolk and instructed in the practical matters concerned with the running of a farm. Sticking with the plan that his son would become a farmer, William Hopkins senior purchased a small farm near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. William junior and his wife (he had by now married a Miss Braithwaite) made an unconvincing attempt to run the farm. He neither enjoyed the work nor did it bring in enough money to allow him to live a reasonable life and debts began to mount. When his wife died, Hopkins saw the chance to start a new life that he would enjoy. Hopkins sold the small farm which his father had bought him and with the money he was able to pay off his debts. In 1822, at the age of twenty-nine, Hopkins entered Peterhouse, the oldest of the Colleges of the University of Cambridge. There he studied mathematics and, particularly when one takes into account his previous poor education, he was highly successful. He graduated in 1827 placed Seventh Wrangler in the Mathematical Tripos. This means that he was seventh in the list of those gaining first class honours in that year. Just ahead of him was

HOPKINS, William
William Hopkins was born in 1865. He was originally a Riversdale hardware merchant. He became mayor during the opening days of Saskatoon's huge 1910-1913 real estate boom. By 1913 he was President of The W. Hopkins and Cameron Company, Ltd., "Real Estate, Farm Lands, City Property, Loans and Insurance". During his time in office Saskatoon dealt with its first major labour dispute, in 1909. The Saskatoon Federal Labour Union - representing 150 men working on digging the city's new sewers - complained about wages and working conditions. A board of inquiry was set up under the federal Industrial Disputes Investigations Act, consisting of Mayor Hopkins, an unnamed labour representative and with E.J. Meilicke sitting as chair. During the discussions Mayor Hopkins is reported to have said: "Mr Chairman, we will not concede the recognition of the union shop. For us to do so would be against the laws of man and God." Mayor Hopkins is also reported to have suggested in 1910 that "within a few years" the city would grow to 100,000 inhabitants and that all farm land within a ten mile radius of the city should be subdivided. He died January 11, 1935, and is buried in Saskatoon's Woodlawn Cemetery.

Sarah and Allan Hopkins In Christchurch, Allan Hopkins had a career which took him from the shadows to riches and, after a spectacular crash, back into obscurity. Despite an explosive temper, he was a loving husband and father; Dora, the beauty of the family, was his favourite. Quick to make use of new technology, he installed electric lighting in the house and outbuildings and became the first private telephone subscriber in North New Brighton. Not for him the public telephone which was installed in Bowhill Road in 1916, nor the party line which six small-time businessmen had linked to their houses three years later. The budding magnate was a cheerful supporter of good causes, including, in his own area, the North Beach Surf Club. Should he see a barefoot boy, he would take him to a shop and fit him out with boots. Dora Hopkins In October 1921 Allan awaited sentence in the Supreme Court. The Crown Prosecutor stated that the defalcations amounted to £22,000 though the Official Assignee would one day put the debts at £46,000. Nevertheless, Allan pleaded guilty to but four charges of failing to account for sums involving some £1700.
