William A. Hopkins
WILLIAM A. HOPKINS, now living retired at Solomon, has turned the seventy-fifth milepost on life's journey. His years have accounted for something not only to himself but to his country and his community. He was a gallant and loyal soldier of the Union during more than three years of the Civil war. After his part in that struggle he came to Kansas and has been a resident of Dickinson County for practically half a century. The Solomon community esteems him not only as one of its oldest but one of its most highly respected citizens. For a few months he made up for early deficiencies in the way of education by a special course in school, and then took up the trade of plasterer and for a time worked in a flour mill at Vincennes, Indiana. On coming to Kansas in 1866 Mr. Hopkins located at Solomon, which was then a frontier community and in a district largely devoted to the range stock industry. He began working at his trade as a plasterer and he plastered many of the first houses in the town of Solomon and in the nearby country. He also proved up a claim four miles north of Solomon. Besides his work at his trade as a farmer Mr. Hopkins bought grain at Solomon for a number of years. Everything connected with his business career bears the stamp of integrity and the highest degree of honor. In 1898 Mr. Hopkins was appointed postmaster of Solomon by President William McKinley. He held that office consecutively sixteen years, going out during President Wilson's first term. For two years he was also mayor of Solomon and was a member of its school board sixteen years. Mr. Hopkins is now giving his time to the offices of police judge and justice of the peace. He has always been an active republican since casting his first vote for Abraham Lincoln in 1864, a few weeks after he had returned from the army.

Hopkins's William Reiner vividly remembers the child whose case made him rethink his approach to medicine. "It was a little 7-year-old," says Reiner, "who just about tore everybody's guts out." A urologist turned psychiatrist, Reiner had devoted his career to treating young patients born with irregular genitals. Some had ambiguous genitalsa scrotum along with a phallus that resembled a clitoris, for example. Others, though genetic males, had no penis or had an extremely rare condition called micropenis. Physicians for several decades had recommended that children in this latter group be raised as girlsthinking based largely on pioneering work done in the 1950s and '60s at Hopkins, one of the few medical centers in the world that specialized in treating children with such disorders. Common practice in a case of a boy who lacked a penis or had a micropenis was to surgically remove the testes, construct female external genitals, and prescribe female hormonesthen send the child home to be brought up as Sally or Susie. To do otherwise, it seemed, was to subject these babies to an unimaginably cruel childhood of locker room taunts and psychological pain, followed by a frustrating adulthood of sexual inadequacy.

HOPKINS, WILLIAM HARLEN (1856-1933). William Harlen (Bee) Hopkins, Panhandle qv pioneer and rancher, was born on March 24, 1856, on a farm near Bloomfield, Indiana. During his early years his family moved several times, first to Iowa, then to Shawnee County near Topeka, Kansas, and then in 1877 to North Dakota. Soon after that Bee Hopkins began his career as a rancher, when he went to Colorado to join his brother-in-law Will Young. In 1878 they helped trail the Pollard brothers' cattle to the Panhandle to begin the PO Ranch qv in Hemphill County. Hopkins turned over the PO cattle to Robert Moody qv after Moody bought out Milton Pollard's interest in 1881. In the meantime Hopkins had gone to work for the Horseshoe Ranch ( see LAUREL LEAF RANCH) of Frank Kerrick (or Karrick). When J. V. Andrews bought the Horseshoe from Kerrick in 1879, Hopkins was made foreman. His two younger brothers, Joseph (Hoos) and Andrew (Josh), joined him there. Hopkins was retained as foreman after the Texas Land and Cattle Company qv bought out the Horseshoe and started using the Laurel Leaf brand in 1882. Friction developed when Edgar Wilson, the syndicate's general manager, tried to get Hopkins to run off some neighboring farmers and small stockmen who had recently settled the area along the Gunter-Munson survey strip. The foreman refused to do so, and his threatened resignation was averted only by a raise in salary to twenty-five dollars a month.
