The Heart of Mathematics
A Guide to Effective Thinking
2000. Approx. 680 pp. 700 figs., 100 in color.
The power and attractiveness of the subject of mathematics is often hidden from students who are in introductory courses. In this new, innovative overview textbook, the authors put special emphasis on the deep ideas of mathematics, and present the subject through lively and entertaining examples, anecdotes, chanllenges and illustrations, all of which are designed to excite the student's interest. The underlying ideas include topics from number theory, infinity, geometry, topology, probability and chaos theory. Throughout the text, the authors stress that mathematics is an analytical way of thinking, one that can be brought to bear on problem solving and effective thinking in any field of study.

To K. Geba, for his 70th birthday anniversary
Biologists claim that the development of a living organism reflects and reproduces in some way the historical evolution of the species to which it belongs. In the case of human beings, the important phases of the evolution have been characterized by expressions like homo erectus, homo habilis, homo faber, homo sapiens,... Considering, with this picture in mind, the evolution of the mathematical carreer of Kazimierz Geba, we first observe that the ambient space of his development seems to have been a Banach space , which is not too surprising for a Polish mathematician. Geba's first favorite field of interest has been the space of continuous functions, with a first paper dated, using Carbon 14, from 1959. During the corresponding short period (two years essentially) of his evolution devoted to spaces of continuous functions, Kazimierz Geba can be qualified as homo semadenis , for reasons that experts only will understand.

Christos Dimitrios Papakyriakopoulos Griechische Wissenschaftler (a short version of a biography written by Stavros G. Papastavridis ) CHRISTOS PAPAKYRIAKOPOYLOS was born in ATHENS (-XALANDRI) in 1914. His father, coming from PELOPONESE (TRIPOLIS), was an affluent merchant. He graduated from Varvakeion, ( the most prestigious, at that time and for many decades later, high school in Greece ). He enrolled in the National Metsovion Institute of Technology (Ethniko Metsovion Polytexneio) in 1933. There he met Professor of Mathematics Nikolaos Kritikos, who influenced him to switch and enroll in the Mathematics Department of the University of Athens. His interest was attracted to Algebraic Topology, (subject having minimal activity in Greece at that time), and he read on his own Aleksandrov and Hopf, Topologie, which has appeared in 1935. Professor Bernhard Neumann, one of Australia's most distinguished mathematicians, was interviewed for the Australian Academy of Science's Interviews with Australian scientists programin February 1998. The interview was conducted by Professor Bob Crompton. Here is an edited transcript. You can order the videotape from us for $65.50 (including GST). List of edited transcripts Introduction Professor Bernhard Neumann has played a dominant role in mathematics in Australia since his arrival in this country in 1962. He came to Australia to take up an appointment as the Foundation Chair of the Department of Mathematics within the Institute of Advanced Studies of the Australian National University. He and his late wife Hanna, also a Fellow of this Academy, who was Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics in the then School of General Studies, now the Faculties, taught and influenced many young people with mathematical talent, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and their influence spread downwards into the schools. Bernhard Neumann's distinguished contributions to mathematics are many and varied, mostly on the theory of groups. His original work is to be found in over 100 papers, but in addition he is the author of two books and numerous reviews, and he has written essays about a number of famous mathematicians. In his six-volume series

Now responsible for his family and no longer content to work on the vision of other artists, he decided that the only way to be successful would be to create his own fate. Working at an advertising agency that handled the high profile SAAB Company as the head of film he took a loan out against 3 months overtime and made the decision that brings us here. He decided to make what the mind of Bo Arne Vibenius only envisioned as "the most commercial film ever!"
While it may seem Bo Arne never truly got a handle on what "commercial" may have meant, what came of this work was far better than any simple bit of product for a market hungry for cinema thrills. And certainly, it was more daunting a task to distribute it and reap the rewards.
To quote the man from his own story...
"The picture which You are about to screen-Thriller-A Cruel Picture-was written in 3 days and nights (those were the days before computers) on an old typing machine. My fingers were actually bleeding after those 3 days OF NOT ONLY MENTAL BUT ALSO PHYSICAL FINGER WORK."

John Baez
In " " I claimed to have figured out the real reason for the importance of the number 24 in string theory. Now I'm not so sure - some pieces of the puzzle that I thought would fit together don't seem to be fitting. Maybe if I explain what I know so far, some experts will hand me some of the missing pieces, or tell me where the ones I have go. Most of the puzzle pieces came from a talk at a conference on homotopy theory that I went to: 1) Ulrike Tillmann, The moduli space of Riemann surfaces - a homotopy theory approach, talk at Northwestern University Algebraic Topology Conference, March 27, 1997 However, some conversations with Andre Joyal during this conference really helped turn my attention towards what might be going on here. Let's start by recalling some stuff about homotopy groups of spheres. There are often lots of topologically different ways of wrapping an m-dimensional sphere around a k-dimensional sphere. For example, if m = k = 1, we're talking about the ways of wrapping a circle around a circle. These are classified by an integer called the "winding number". We can make this concrete by thinking of the circle as the unit circle in the complex plane. Take your favorite integer and call it d. Then the function f(z) = z^d It turns out that any continuous function from the circle to itself can be continuously deformed to exactly one of these functions f(z) = z^d. Homotopy theory is all about such continuous deformations. In the jargon of homotopy theory, we say two functions from some space to some other space are "homotopic" if we can continuously deform the first function to the second. Another way of putting it is that the two functions lie in the same "homotopy class". Speaking of jargon, real topologists never say "continuous function": instead, they say "map". So, using this jargon: we know the homotopy class of a map from the circle to itself if we know its winding number.

Title: Visibility Number of a Graph
Abstract: With basic notions of graph theory, in this seminar the visibility number of a graph will be introduced due to prof. D. West. The visiblility number of a graph G, denoted b(G), is the minimum t such that G can be represented by assigning each vertex x the set S_x of points in at most t horizontal segments in the plane so that uv is an edge of G if and only if some point of S_u sees some point of S_v via a vertical segment of positive width unobstructed by assigned points. Also some examples and open problems will be mentioned. Date: Tuesday, October 28

Introduction
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, Meinen Damen and Herren. First of all let me thank the organizers for inviting me to speak on this important occasion. As you will see, it was my late wife Olga Taussky who should have talked, but I lost her seven years ago. When I chose my title, I soon found that there was a remarkable parallelism between ETH and the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), and so I arranged a surveying with pages devoted to ETH and NBS which will be supplemented by more detail as necessary.
Olga and Professor Stiefel (1929-1932)
Although Olga's thesis was on Algebraic Number Theory (Classfield Theory), she had also obtained results in Topological Algebra and approached Professor Heinz Hopf for advice on how to prove a converse of one of them. He told her to get in touch with Stiefel. This meeting only took place twenty years later at the NBS Institute for Numerical Analysis at the University of California at Los Angeles (NBS-INA-UCLA).
