Collected Works in Mathematics and Statistics
This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews. For correction, comments, or questions, write to Karl Dilcher ( dilcher@mscs.dal.ca You can scroll through this list, or jump to the beginning of the letter:

Professor Sergey Bobkov was an invited speaker at the Conference in Functional Analysis in Honor of 70th Birthday of Professor A. Pelczynski. The conference was held September 22-29, 2002 in Bedlewo (near Poznan, Poland) and was organized by the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Ordway Professor Nicolai Krylov was a co-organizer, with Professor Guiseppe DaPrato (Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa), of the session on Kolmogorov equations, at the first joint meeting of the American Mathematical Society and the Union of Italian Mathematicians, Pisa, June 12-16, 2002. The speakers were Professors: Marc Freidlin (University of Maryland), Alessandra Lunardi (Universita' di Parma), Boris Rozovskii (University of Southern California at Los Angeles), Franco Flandoli (Universita' di Pisa), Sandra Cerrai (Universita' di Firenze), Sergey Lototsky (University of Southern California at Los Angeles), and Lorenzo Zambotti (Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa).

Hermann Strebel Lichttherapeut und Sonnenforscher [Hermann Strebel light therapist and sun observer]; in: Sterne und Weltraum , 31. Jg., Heft 3, 1992, S. 154-157. Hermann Strebel (1868-1943) was born in Munich where, after receiving his doctorate in medicine from Erlangen University in 1892 and for some years working in Regensburg, he practiced as a physician specializing in the then new field of light therapy, also holding some patents in that field. Presumably because of this specialization he also became interested in solar research, so in 1926 he began building an observatory in Herrsching near Munich. Unusually for the time, he used mirror telescopes, built by the famous B. Schmidt, for his solar observations. His best observations, resulting for example in the recognition of the polygonal structure of solar granules, were of an equal quality with the stratospheric observations made in the 1960s.
However, Strebel also produced quite a weird theory of the sun's structure, ignoring the results of concurrent academic research. In 1932 Strebel bequeathed his observatory to the Munich-Bogenhausen observatory which was then still part of the Administration of Scientific Collections of the (Bavarian) State . In 1937 he stopped observing, and most of the instruments were brought to Bogenhausen where not much use was made of them, however. His publications of observations in the 1930s provoked renewed interest in solar granulation eg, by H. H. Plaskett , but then soon became forgotten. Yet, he was one of the most successful astronomical practitioners in Bavaria between the World Wars.

General, short description of the collection
    A short description:
This collection of Jakob Nielsen papers consists mainly of reprints, which Nielsen has received from other scientists and sorted by authors. In addition to the reprints there is other material from some of the persons, i.e. letters, manuscripts, applications for positions etc. All the material is from the period around 1890-1959 and the reprints are in many different languages. However, the additional material is mainly in Danish or German.
    Size:
The collection is contained in 79 archival boxes of which the first 25 are standard boxes while the rest are Nielsen's original boxes.
    Handed over:
The collection was located in the basement of the mathematical library in the E block of the H. C. Ørsted Institute in the fall of 1996. It is not known when and how it was put here. Photocopies of material from the Staatsarchiv Hamburg was added to box 10 in July 1999.
