Herman Hollerith Hermann Hollerith wurde am 29.2.1860 in Buffalo im Staat New York (USA) geboren und starb am 17.11.1929. Er war der Sohn deutscher Einwanderer und arbeitete als Bergwerksingenieur und Erfinder. Hollerith klügelte ein System aus, wie man Daten auf Karten durch ausgestanzte Löcher verschlüsseln kann. Bei der Auswertung der 11. amerikanischen Volkszählung, die im Jahre 1890 stattfand, wurde das System erstmals eingesetzt. Es bewährte sich bei statistischen Auswertungen und war für die Entwicklung des Digitalcomputers von Nutzen. Er entwickelte einen elektromechanischen Lochkartenleser. Das Funktionsprinzip der Zählmaschine zeigt die Abbildung rechts: Eine bewegliche Platte (A) drückt Metallstifte auf die Oberfläche einer Lochkarte (B) . Eine feststehende Grundplatte (C) verhindert, dass die Lochkarte dabei nachgibt. Ein Stift, der auf ein Kartenloch stößt, drückt in einen Behälter mit Quecksilber (D), wodurch ein elektrischer Kontakt (E) geschlossen wird. Die Daten wurden mit einem Stanzer, der einer Schreibmaschine ähnelte, in Karten gelocht. Die Sortiermaschine ordnete die Karten dann nach gleichen Gruppen, die Zählmaschine Holleriths "las" die Löcher der Karten mittels elektrischer Kontakte als Werte ein. An den Stellen, wo sich Löcher befanden, wurde ein Stromkreis geschlossen, so daß die Löcher nachgewiesen und gezählt werden konnten. Entsprechend der Position des Loches wurde der Wert an den Zähluhren addiert. Für die Auswertung der zehnten Volkszählung, die im Jahre 1880 stattgefunden hatte, brauchten 500 Helfer fast sieben Jahre lang. Mit Hilfe von Holleriths Lochkartenmaschine schafften es die 500 Helfer mit 43 Zählmaschinen in knapp vier Wochen.

Hollerith was surely a bright child but struggled in his early schooling with difficulties learning spelling. There ensued a battle of will with his teacher resulting in young Herman avoiding school at all possible opportunities. Eventually, he was removed from school and received private tutoring at home from the family's Lutheran minister. His higher education was a series of outstanding successes. Entering at the City College of New York in 1875, Hollerith then studied advanced engineering at the Columbia School of Mines in 1879. Hollerith earned honors and a distinction in his final examinations and so impressed one of his instructors, Prof. W P Trowbridge, that he asked Hollerith to become his assistant at Columbia University.
