Science and Cultural Values The passage of Greek science into Western Europe through medieval Spain has been one of the focal points of medieval intellectual history. Although the movement has been typically portrayed as a bipartite one, with translation from Greek into Arabic anteceding the flourescence of Arabic science in the ninth century, and a later phase of translation from Arabic into Latin (eleventh and twelfth centuries) and finally into Romance vernaculars (thirteenth century), recent research demonstrates the continuous nature of the phenomenon. That similar points appear to have been made about all medieval cultures must affect the general evaluation of the impact of science on medieval societies. These kinds of essentialist generalizations are, in my view, extremely questionable because they assume, first, that values are homogeneously distributed among all strata of society and, second, because they rest on the ultimate association of the practice or non-practice of science with modal personality ("national character"). It seems dubious on the face of it that a complex society, composed of a variety of social and cultural interests and backgrounds, can even be characterized as having "fundamental needs" (a concept much less easy to apply to group, than to individual, psychologies), much less "aspirations" (a teleological concept markedly out of place in objective historical analysis).

Por ello la visión de la reencarnación se dificulta en varios sentidos: a) No es oficial ni bien entendida la creencia en la reencarnación y por ello no aceptada. b) No resulta sencillo encontrar antecedentes para justificar su existencia, sobre todo si los mismos apuntan a ser oficiales. c) Sólo en la Kabalah, o en un desprendimiento del judaísmo (el movimiento karaíta, primera etapa de Anan ben David, su fundador en el siglo octavo e.c.), encontramos antecedentes serios. En la Kabalah la reencarnación ocupa un lugar trascendente en líneas de pensamiento importantes, como veremos más adelante. Habíamos mencionado como la Resurrección se relacionaba con un retorno de la muerte con el mismo cuerpo en concordancia al momento final de la vida del mismo. Aquí puede inferirse una cierta indivisibilidad de cuerpo y alma. No debe confundirse con la inmortalidad del alma.
