Jews watched their Arab counterparts closely and learned to be astronomers, philosophers, scientists, and poets. This was a time of partial autonomy. As the dhimmis , Jews were free to live in the Islamic world as long as they paid a special tax, the jizya , to Muslim rulers. Jews had their own legal system and social services but were supposed to wear identifying clothing While Jewish communities in Arab and Islamic countries fared better overall than those in Christian lands in Europe at the time, Jews were no strangers to persecution and humiliation among the Arabs and Muslim. Conclusion

Mankind and evolution are at a critical juncture. Man must now deliberately choose to play The Game of Life, dedicate himself to the pursuit of total awareness and create an Ethical State, or he will continue to disintegrate under the forces of bureaucratization and ideology. Both outcomes are "natural." They both represent the evolutionary mechanisms of "joining" and "fanning out" respectively. The scientists of the Renaissance gave man an impetus toward total awareness that has carried him beyond the Earth as well as toward the center of life. We are beginning to understand the basic structure of life. A new Renaissance will enable man to understand the structure of mind. The groping, clumsy quality of the evolutionary force has made man regress from the incipient joining of the Renaissance to the bureaucratization and specialization of today. The fanning out of awareness must be given a focus in order that knowledge may become whole again. In the unity of knowledge and totality of awareness lies the unity of man and the creation of the Moral Society. The scientific investigation of the psychosocial environment is the focal point which will bring knowledge to "ether again and unify man. However, bringing all the sciences to bear on the psychosocial environment poses a problem. It is a problem analogous to a schizophrenic giving himself psychotherapy.

Throughout the ages, reports of a birth have often included the hope that the baby had been born be-mazal tov , or be-siman tov , followed by the traditional blessing that the child grow up to a life of Torah, to marry, and perform good deeds. The announcement of a birth in a Jewish family today is greeted customarily by family and friends with the same Hebrew words, expressing hope that the infant was born with good luck under a good sign, siman , or star, mazal . The Talmud uses mazal to mean "star" or "constellation"; this word has come to mean "luck" through the historical popularity of astrology. Talmudic sages discussed the effects of the celestial configuration on the night of birth on a person later in life and expected similarities between two people born under the same star. For example, one sage proposed that a person born on Sunday would be distinguished; on Monday, wrathful; on Tuesday, wealthy and sensual; on Wednesday, intelligent and enlightened; on Thursday, benevolent; on Friday, pious. If born on the Sabbath, he was destined to die on a Sabbath. Astrologers estimated that the influence of the ruling planet at the hour of birth could be decisive in determining character, health, and longevity. For example, someone born under the influence of Venus could become rich and adulterous, whereas someone born under Jupiter was more likely to become a righteous observer of commandments. The manner in which the celestial configuration governed behavior remained controversial among Jews for many centuries, however. Nevertheless, someone born under a favorable constellation was considered lucky, whereas if the ruling planet was likely to have unpleasant influences, a person would have to use intelligence and judgment to overcome expected ill effects.

Time is not finite, time is infinite. If nothing exist, time is still there.
Time is just something we feel/sense that keeps going.

OD Board Original Dissent Culture War PDA View Full Version : Gentile vs. Jewish intellects Juan Raymondo Cortez On another thread I argued that there were many Jews in 20th-century physics because Jews (and other non-Europeans) are essentially middlemen, and modern physics simple seized upon the genius insights of earlier mathematicians and applied them to natural phenomena/problems. E.g., Einstein's Theory of Relativity is simply the re-ordering of the mathematics of Reimann. Reimann thought this stuff up right out of his head. Einstein learned it, saw a physics use for it, and today Einstein is a "genius" and Reimann in unknown. And now that AntiYuppie set me straight about genius Werner Heisenberg not being Jewish, my case is even stronger.
So, if it is the mathematics that is a measure of the genius or power of the intellect, let us compare the two groups, Jew and Gentile.

In this enlightening study, a noted scholar elucidates the distinguishing characteristics of the works of several Jewish thinkers of the Middle Ages. In addition to summaries of the main arguments and teachings of Moses Maimonides, Isaac Israeli, Judah Halevi, Abraham Ibn Daud, Hillel ben Samuel, Levi ben Gerson, Joseph Albo, and many others, the author offers insightful analyses and commentary. Of particular value to beginners, this volume is also an ever-relevant resource for many issues of scholarly debate.
