    HISTORY OF RAVENSKNOWLE
The cross in various forms, often a patriarchal, or double one, to be found on some ancient houses, is said to indicate that the land upon which they stand was at one period the property of the medieval Military Order of the Templars who had their origin in the first Crusade; those warriors whose valour was to astonish the world, and whose subsequent power and riches were to excite its envy and hatred. Instituted in 1118, they flourished during the XIIth and XIIIth centuries, but were suppressed in England by a decree promulgated by Archbishop Greenfeld at Cawood, 5th Ed. II., 1312. Most of the estates of the Templars were granted to the rival order of The Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem. The phrase occasionally found in old Wills and Court Rolls, stating that persons died "subcrue," or under the cross, has a dual meaning, showing that they were tenants of the Manors of the above Orders, whose sign their houses bore, and also that their days ended literally beneath the Cross and within the pale of the church. The Ravensknowle lands are known to have been subject to a rental to the Commandery, or Preceptory of these Militant Brethren at Newland, Near Normanton.

T homas Burpee was born in 1836 in Stafford, Connecticut. He was educated in Ellington, Connecticut. In 1857, he married Adeline Harmon of Stafford and by 1861 they had two sons, Lucien and Charles. Before the Civil War, he was a foreman or manager in several of the mills in Rockville. He was also the captain of the local militia in town. W hen the war broke out he voluntered his militia to the Union, but his offer was refused because it was believed to be a short war. In 1862 when President Lincoln requested more troops from Connecticut, Thomas' militia became Company D of the 14th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, later know for its valience as the "Fighting Fourteenth." I n early July of 1862, Gov. Buckingham repeatedly asked Capt. Burpee to accept a majorship in the 21st CVI but Thomas refused. Finally after many requests, Thomas Burpee was appointed as a major in the 21st Conn. Vol. Inf., in late August of 1862. He rose through the ranks and eventually was promoted to a full colonel. Thomas was very well liked and respected by his men and many others who knew or served around him.

Members of previous scholarship classesninety-one past winners this yearstream back to take part in convention activities and assume responsibility, doing anything that they can see needs to be done. Everyone looks forward to meeting the new scholarship class and to hearing what its members are doing and planning to do with their lives. This year each winner crossed the platform and shook hands with President Maurer and Ray Kurzweil, whose foundation presented each with an additional $1,000 scholarship and the latest version of the Kurzweil-1000 reading software.

    80. Claude Raguet Hirst
Claude Raguet hirst, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, studied painting between 1884 and1885 under thomas Noble at the Cincinnati Art Academy.
    http://www.english.ucla.edu/WORTHAM/171B/171pictures/claude_raguet_hirst.htm
Claude Raguet Hirst , born in Cincinnati, Ohio, studied painting between 1884 and 1885 under Thomas Noble at the Cincinnati Art Academy. She continued her studies in New York City under Agnes Abbatt and George Smillie, taking a studio at 30 East 14th Street. Hirst first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1882 and continued to exhibit similar floral still lifes each year through 1886. After a four year hiatus, Hirst once again exhibited at the National Academy. However, in this year the titles of her three entries, Bachelor's Solace, Crumbs of Comfort, and Ye Ancient Tale, no longer reflect her former interest in floral subjects but rather the subjects and style of the famous trompe l'oeil painter William Michael Harnett, who had set up his studio at 28 East 14th Street, just one door away from Hirst. It is most probable that the close proximity of working quarters exposed Hirst to Harnett's bachelor subjects and style, both of which she quickly adopted. Hirst exhibited yearly at the National Academy from 1890 to 1905, missing only 1892. She also exhibited frequently at the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Hirst died in 1942. (M. MELISSA WOLFE)
