H William Hirst submitted by Margery Jones William Hirst, a highly respected farmer of Richland Township, was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1819 and is a son of Thomas and Phoebe (Greenroyd) Hirst. Thomas Hirst was born in Yorkshire, England in 1777, and was a son of John and Mary (Pearson) Hirst, both natives of England. He was a weaver by trade, but later in life engaged in farming, which he followed until his death in 1868. His union with Phoebe Greenroyd, who was born in Yorkshire, England, resulted in the birth of the following children: John; Ann; William: Joseph; James; Benjamin; Mary; Sarah; Alice; Louisa and George. James came to the United States and located in Cincinnati, Ohio where he lived until his death in 1897. He was a machinist, and was the inventor of the Hirst motor, of which he was also the manufacturer. William Hirst came to the United States in 1847, at the age of twenty-four years, and landed at the port of New York. He then located in Ohio and lived there until 1850 when he came west to Iowa, locating in Burlington. Up to that time his work had been that of a shoemaker. He moved to Wapello County, Iowa in 1851 and was located at Eddyville until the fall of that year when he settled on his farm in section 21, Richland township, where he now owns 160 acres of valuable land. He lived on this place until 1892, when he moved with his wife to his present home in Kirkville, where he lives a retired life, having rented his farm.

Against the Tide:
The Life of Francis W. Hirst
Mark Brady
Sadly, it is only an exceptionally well-informed reader who will recognize the name of Francis W. Hirst, whose stalwart advocacy of personal freedom, free trade, and peace during the first half of the twentieth century, and especially during the First World War and its aftermath, surely earns him an honored place in the pantheon of individual liberty. Francis Wrigley Hirst ("Frank" to his family) was born on June 10, 1873, at Dalton Lodge, two miles east of Huddersfield in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He was the third of five children (two sons, three daughters) of a prosperous wool-stapler, Alfred Hirst, who went blind at 27, and his wife, Mary Wrigley. On both sides of his family Frank Hirst had nonconformist ancestors who had worked and voted for the Great Reform Bill and the repeal of the Corn Laws. His maternal grandfather, Joseph Woodhead of Huddersfield, had supported Richard Cobden and John Bright in their opposition to the Crimean War and had voted for Cobden at Huddersfield in 1857. His paternal grandfather, Charles Hirst, had enjoined his son, Alfred, "always be against war; nine times out of ten you will be right, and the other time it will not matter." As a young boy in the early 1880s, Frank Hirst met a few of the old handloom weavers who spoke of the hungry years during and after the French wars, when work failed and the taxed grain rose to impossible prices. Thus during his childhood, which seems to have been a happy one, he imbibed the great Liberal tradition of peace, retrenchment, and reform, causes that he held dear throughout his long life.

Philadelphia, Jan. 31, 1800 I have lately by accident got a sight of a single volume (the 3d.) of the Abbe Barruel's 'Antisocial conspiracy,' which gives me the first idea I have ever had of what is meant by the Illuminatism against which 'illuminate Morse' Barruel's own parts of the book are perfectly the ravings of a Bedlamite. But he quotes largely from Wishaupt whom he considers as the founder of what he calls the order. As you may not have had an opportunity of forming a judgment of this cry of 'mad dog' which has been raised against his doctrines, I will give you the idea I have formed from only an hour's reading of Barruel's quotations from him, which you may be sure are not the most favorable. Wishaupt seems to be an enthusiastic Philanthropist. Morse Buonaparte , its chief organ, may stand in a better light than at present. I am with great esteem, dear sir, your affectionate friend.

The highly competitive IC-24 Class, at the start of Sunday’s second race BVI sailors catching up to St. Thomas in IC-24 class BY DEAN GREENAWAY Besides Tom Hill’s 75-foot Titan XII making an incredible run in the 34th BVI Spring Regatta—winning six of nine races on corrected time—the hottest competition was in the IC-24s class, primarily between British and U.S. Virgin Islands sailors. In Friday’s opening day, BVI boats occupied the top three positions, led by Robbie and Mike Hirst’s entry Sea Hawk. Lurking in the shadows—just three points behind Andrew Waters Conch-Querer, was St. Thomas’ John Holmberg, brother of Peter Holmberg, the U.S. Virgin Islands’ 1988 Olympic Games silver medalist. At the end of the second day, Holmberg split the top three BVI positions, vaulted past Waters and pulled within 15 points of Robbie— the last BVI sailor to compete in the Olympic Games—setting up a showdown on Sunday’s closing day. Holmberg however, couldn’t overcome the Hirst’s on the final day and finished three points ahead of Waters’ Conch-Querer—who got two firsts on the final day—to make it a close 63-66. The Hirsts won the division with 43 points and claimed the Chief Minister’s prize for the Best BVI Boat in the competition. Holmberg explained that the IC-24s have been in St. Thomas for 3-years and in the BVI a year and a half. He said the learning curve was steep in the beginning. “St. Thomas boats are fairly fast. The BVI, with a lot less time in the boats have been working very hard to come to the same speed,” he said. “The Hirsts are proving that they are there. Andrew Waters was down in the pack last year and this year fighting for second and third with me. This shows that the BVI has been working very hard at their practice as well.”
