Va., left his native state when he was just a young man and came west to Kansas. He spent the year 1870 around Manhattan. He joined with the cowboys that drove cattle from Abilene to Texas. On one of these trips he was caught out in a blizzard and froze his hands, which left a permanent stiffness to his fingers. The next year, 1871, he came on farther south and filed a claim, which later was to become a part of the City of Mulvane. The deed was signed by President U. S. Grant, September 1 st, 1873, Certificate No. 2314, Osage Indian Land. Thus, he became one of the pioneer farmers in this region. About that time, another pioneer family, Joseph and Mary Jane Pattee, settled on a farm about a mile north of Mulvane. In the Pattee family, almost every generation moved west. The ancestor of this family came to America from Ireland and settled in Maine, and later moved to Marietta, Ohio. It was here that their three children were born, whose names were: Clarissa, Mandana (later Mrs. Charles Hunsaker) and J. Edgar. The end of the railroad was at Wichita. Freight and passenger service used wagons, but, ponies in the south carried mail service.

GEORGE CANNING HILL (1825-1898) George Canning Hill, author and journalist, son of George Hill and his wife, Hannah Dunham, was born in Norwich, Connecticut, February 10, 1825. He entered Yale College and was graduated with the degree of B.A. in 1845. For about eight months afterwards he taught in a private school in his home town, then studied law in his father's office. In 1846 he married Martha M. Lyon, of Chaplin, Connecticut, and removed to Lowndesboro, Alabama, where for a short time he was principal of an academy, and at the same time was admitted to the bar of that state. He shortly afterwards returned to Connecticut and became editor of the Hartford Courant for one year. The next few years were spent in Chaplin (he was there as early as 1851) where he went for his health and where he was engaged in writing. At the same time he was admitted to the Connecticut bar. During this period he was writing for Gleason's Pictorial (1852), and also published his "Cap Sheaf," under the pseudonym "Lewis Myrtle" (1853), and "Dovecote; or, The Heart of the Homestead" (1854). In 1856 he became manager of the newly started Boston Daily Ledger

Hill joined the staff of the Nautical Almanac Office Simon Newcomb took over the Nautical Almanac in 1877 and began a complete recomputation of all solar system motions, Hill was assigned the difficult problem of the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn. He reluctantly moved to Washington, where the Almanac Office was now located, completed the enormous labor in ten years, then returned to the farm, where he continued his research in celestial mechanics. He accepted a lectureship at Columbia University established especially for him (with a gift from Catherine W. Bruce ), but soon resigned and returned his salary when few students enrolled in his course. Hill’s grandfather, Micaiah Hill, founded the London Missionary Society’s outpost in Berhampur, India, where his father, Samuel John Hill, was stationed and where Hill was born. He attended Blackheath (later known as) Eltham College and then University College, London and finally Merton College. There he studied under Percy Gardner (q.v.), achieving firsts in his examinations of classical studies and who also instilled in him a love of numismatics. In 1893 he joined the British Museum in the department of Coins and Medals. At that time, the Department was the center of study of Greek coins. Hill continued the publishing work of Reginald Poole (q.v.) and Barclay V. Head (q.v.), issuing in 1897 the first volume of the important Greek coin catalog. In the next twenty-five years, Hill produced major catalogs on most areas of the museums holdings. He also edited the Journal of Helenic Studies . In 1912 he became Keeper of the Department. In 1924 he married Mary Paul (d. 1924), whose parents had settled in Rome. Hill’s family excursions deepened an interest in Italian art and painting. His work on Pisanello and his
