K¶nigsberg (Kaliningrad, Russia), January 23, 1862, d. G¶ttingen, Germany, February 14, 1943] Hilbert led an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to put all mathematics on a provably consistent and finite logical basis. In 1898 Hilbert himself developed the first completely logical version of Euclidean geometry. In 1900 Hilbert proposed a famous list of 23 problems that needed solution; resolving these became one of the main threads of 20th-century mathematics. Later he contributed greatly to applied mathematical physics; the Hilbert space of vectors with infinitely many components is perhaps his most useful advance. Encyclopedia Hilbert, David, (1862–1943), German mathematician, professor at K¶nigsberg (1886–95) and G¶ttingen (1895–1930), b. K¶nigsberg, Germany. His proof of the theorum of invariants (1890) supplanted earlier computational work on the subject and paved the way for modern algebraic geometry. His report on algebraic number theory (1897) inspired many of the subsequent developments in that area, and he also made significant contributions to multivariable calculus, theoretical physics, mathematical logic, and Euclidean geometry. At the International Mathematical Congress in Paris (1900), he put forth 23 research problems, which launched much of the research agenda of 20th-century mathematics; some of the problems remain unsolved.

David Hilbert David Hilbert January 23 February 14 ) was a German mathematician born in Wehlau , near K¶nigsberg Prussia (now Znamensk , near Kaliningrad Russia ) who is recognized as one of the most influential mathematicians of the 19th and early 20th centuries. His own discoveries alone would have given him that honor, yet it was his leadership in the field of mathematics throughout his later life that distinguishes him. He held a professorship in mathematics at the University of G¶ttingen for most of his life.

Hilbert solved several important problems in the theory of invariants Hilbert's basis theorem solved the principal problem in nineteenth century invariant theory by showing that any form of a given number of variables and of a given degree has a finite, yet complete system of independent rational integral invariants and covariants. He also unified the field of algebraic number theory with his 1897 treatise Zahlbericht (literally "report on numbers").
