Biography The third of those who helped to bring analytical methods into general use in England was the son of Sir William Hershel (1738-1822), the most illustrious astronomer of the latter half of the eighteenth century and the creator of modern stellar astronomy. Sir John Frederick William Herschel was born on March 7, 1792, educated at St. John's College, Cambridge, and died on May 11, 1871. His earliest original work was a paper on Cotes's theorem, and it was followed by others on mathematical analysis, but his desire to complete his father's work led ultimately to his taking up astronomy. His papers on light and astronomy contain a clear exposition of the principles which underlie the mathematical treatment of those subjects.
Amongst those who materially assisted in extending the use of the new analysis were William Whewell (1794-1866) and George Biddell Airy (1801-1892), both Fellows of Trinity College, Cambridge. The former issued in 1819 a work on mechanics, and the latter, who was a pupil of Peacock, published in 1826 his Tracts, in which the new method was applied with great success to various physical problems. The efforts of the society were supplemented by the rapid publication of good text-books in which analysis was freely used. The employment of analytical methods spread from Cambridge over the rest of Britain, and by 1830 these methods had come into general use there.

  • Herschel set up a catalogue of double stars nebulae and clusters of the Southern Sky. Herschel helped to lay the foundations of education in South Africa. Herschel was a pioneer of photography . He first described the use of sensitive paper, and used "hypo", or hypo sulphite of soda, as a fixing agent. Herschel first used the terms 'positive' and 'negative', and he may have coined the term 'photography' (under dispute). Co-founder and first President of the Royal Astronomical Society

Great Quotes...
Week of 1-19-05:
William Herschel, John Herschel, and Mark Hatfield
We can learn a lot about William Herschel, John Herschel, and Mark Hatfield and their worldview by the things that they said in their lives. Both William and John Herschel were great astronomers that lived in the 1700's and 1800's. Web www.ChristianBaptistLiving.com William discovered the planet "Uranus" and constructed the greatest reflecting telescopes of that time period. With those telescopes he studied the nebulae and galaxies as had never been done before. William Herschel insisted: "The undevout astronomer must be mad." John Herschel, who should more properly be referred to as Sir John Frederick Herschel, was the son of William who discovered and catalogued over 500 new stars and nebulae. Concerning the Bible, John asserted: "All human discoveries seem to be made only for the purpose of confirming more and more strongly the truths that come from on high and are contained in the Sacred Writings." Mark Hatfield was a Senator from Oregon in the Reagan era. Mr. Hatfield once stated:

Herschel, John Frederick William
John Frederick William Herschel (1792 - 1871)
One of the most prominent astronomers and chemists of his time. In 1819, he discovered the possibility of solubilizing silver salts with thiosulfate, thereby creating the photographic fixer still used today. Herschel was probably the first to use the word "photography " and also coined the term "snapshot". At the beginning of 1839, only one week after he had heard of Daguerre's discovery, he developed his own process on paper and presented it to the Royal Society in London. Other processes followed, for example the cyanotype in 1842. Herschel's maps of the stars, compiled on the basis of measurements collected by his father Friedrich Wilhelm [William] (1730 - 1822), in particular the catalogue (A General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters), published in 1864, remained valid for many years.

Friedrich Wilhelm (William) Herschel (November 15, 1738 - August 25, 1822)
Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel was born in Hannover (Germany) in 1738 as son of Issak Herschel (1707-1767), a musician in the regimental band of the Foot-Guards, and Anna Ilse (b. Moritzen). F.W. Herschel himself became also musician (an oboist) and joined his father and his brother Jacob in that band. In 1759, after experiencing the 1757 battle at Hastenbeck, he and Jacob went to England. Jacob returned to Hannover after two years, but Wilhelm (called William in England) stayed. After teaching music for some time, he became organist at Halifax in 1765, and organist and conductor at Bath in 1766. In 1772, William took home in Bath, and was joined by his sister Caroline . On May 10, 1773, at age 35, William Herschel purchased a copy of Ferguson's book, Astronomy , and found interest in astronomy. Consequently, he started to become a skilled maker of the most powerful telescopes of his time: After 1774, he had acquired skills to make specula mirrors superior to any which had been made before. Moreover, he started to observe the heavens; among his first objects, observed on the 4th of March, 1774, was the Orion Nebula On March 13, 1781 William Herschel discovered what he first thought to be a comet, but was later found to be planet Uranus. In recognition of this discovery, he was elected to the Royal Society on December 7, 1781, and awarded an annual grant by King George III of England, which enabled him to give up his carrer in music (on May 19, 1782) and concentrate on astronomy as the Court Astronomer of the King.

English astronomer and mathematician. At the age of 24, Adams was the first person to predict the position of a planetary mass beyond Uranus . De Vito. With the Author's respects». First edition. «With this monumental survey of the stars of the southern hemisphere, Herschel (1792-1871) completed the task begun by his father William, who fifty years earlier had catalogued the northern celestial hemisphere. Using a twenty-foot reflecting telescope, which he erected just south of Cape Town, Herschel swept the whole of the southern sky (1834-38), cataloguing nebulae, clusters and binary stars, carrying out star counts of over 68,000 stars, and making micrometer measures for separation and position angle of many star pairs. He also introduced numerical measurements into stellar photometry by means of the astronomer, a device of his own invention which allowed him to compare the brightness of stars with an image of the full moon. He made detailed drawings and maps of several objects, including the Orion region, the Eta Cariane nebula, the Magellanic Clouds and many extra-galatic and planetary nebulae» (Norman 1056).
