The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. W illiam Herschel, the astronomer who discovered Uranus, was 50 when he married. He was 54 when his only son, John, was born in 1792. John was raised by a cheerful mother, a famous father, and a maiden aunt, Caroline. Caroline was also an astronomer of first rank. It was she who discovered the nebulae in Cetus and Andromeda. For 56 years she and John were joined by a great bond of affection. The household was more than a home. It was also an observatory. The grounds housed the largest reflector telescope in the world. It was 40 feet long with a 48-inch mirror. You might say John was born with a silver telescope in his eye. At first, John studied mathematics at Cambridge.

www HAO only all of NCAR/UCAR/UOP John Frederick William Herschel was born on 7 March 1792 in Slough, England, the only offspring of the already famous astronomer William Herschel . Raised by his father and aunt Caroline (also an astronomer), he studied mathematics at St John's College in Cambridge, from which he graduated in 1816. He then launched into his astronomical career, focusing at first on the study of double stars. In January 1834, after five years of preparation Herschel set out with his family to the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, to engage in the mammoth task of mapping and cataloguing the then largely uncharted Southern celestial hemisphere. It is during this stay at the Cape that Herschel engaged, in 1837-1838, in his pioneering measurements of the solar energy output. Upon his return to England in May 1838, Herschel became increasingly interested in the newly founded art of photography (a name coined by Herschel himself, in fact), and became a strong and vocal proponent for its use in astronomy. In 1849 he published his Outlines of Astronomy , which became a standard textbook for decades to follow. His

John Herschel was the son of William Herschel, the astronomer who discovered Uranus. His mother Mary Pitt was the daughter of a wealthy merchant. She was 38 years old when she married William Herschel, her first husband and her only child having both died. When John Herschel was born in 1792 William was 55 years old and Mary was 42. In addition to his parents, his aunt Caroline Herschel was another important figure in John Herschel's upbringing. William Herschel was not only a leading astronomer but he also had a great talent for music. Both he and his sister Caroline Herschel were extremely musical, and they had both used their musical talents to help augment their income after first arriving in England. John was brought up in Observatory House, with its 40 foot telescope, where music, science and religion were dominant. Caroline Herschel had left her brother's home when he married, but she continued to come to Observatory House every day to help William reduce his data and she proved an outstanding teacher to John, carrying out experiments in physics and chemistry with the young boy.

Caroline Herschel was the daughter of Isaac Herschel and Anna Ilse Moritzen. She was sister of William Herschel and the aunt of John Herschel . Caroline's father Isaac was an oboist in the Hanovarian Foot Guards and rose to become the bandmaster. Although a man with no formal education, he tried hard to give his four sons and two daughters a good education. His interests in music, philosophy and astronomy led to lively conversations in their home but Caroline's mother disapproved of learning in general and although she reluctantly accepted that her four sons should have some education, she strongly opposed her daughters doing anything other than the household chores. Caroline Herschel's four brothers were all brought up to be musicians while Caroline showed an enthusiasm for knowledge which her father tried to satisfy despite all her mother's efforts to ensure that she did nothing but household tasks. Caroline recalled that her father took her [4]:- ... on a clear frosty night into the street, to make me acquainted with several of the beautiful constellations, after we had been gazing at a comet which was then visible.

John F. W. Herschel The son of William Herschel, the discoverer of Uranus. John Herschel studied mathematics and astronomy, made an expedition to the Cape of Good Hope in order to supplement his father's astronomical work made in the northern hemisphere. As a philosopher of sciece, his book A Preliminary Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy (1830) was influencial in illustrating rules of induction and hypothetico-deductive method with concrete examples from physics and related fields; for instance, young Darwin eagerly read it, and Mill's famous "Canons of Induction" are nothing but reformulations of some of Herschel's views. Further, as some historians (C. C. Gillispie in particular) have pointed out, his long review of Quetelet raised interests in probability theory among British scholars; young Maxwell presumably got inspiration from this review, as one can infer from Maxwell's famous 1860 paper on the kinetic theoy of gases as well as from Maxwell's letter (1850) to Campbell. It may be noted that Herschel suggested the frequency interpetation of probability against the Laplacian "classical" (but ambivalent) view. Herschel, John (Frederick William) English scientist, astronomer, and photographer who discovered thousands of close double stars, clusters, and nebulae. He coined the terms 'photography', 'negative', and 'positive', discovered sodium thiosulphite as a fixer of silver halides, and invented the cyanotype process; his inventions also include astronomical instruments.
Herschel was born in Slough, the son of William Herschel, and studied at Cambridge.
He held no academic post but devoted himself to private research. He mapped the southern skies from the Cape of Good Hope Observatory in South Africa 1834-38. During the early days of photography he gave lectures on the subject and exhibited his own images. Together with James South, he won the Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society 1826 for their catalogue of double stars published 1824.
His works include Outlines of Astronomy 1849, which became a standard textbook; General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters, still the standard reference catalogue; and General Catalogue of 10,300 Multiple and Double Stars, published posthumously.

An English astronomer, only son of F. William Herschel , who continued his father's observations of nebulae and double stars, and, in 1834, began a survey of the southern sky from the Cape of Good Hope. This survey, the first systematic observation of the sky in the southern hemisphere, yielded 2,307 nebulae and 2,102 double stars which he listed, together with his father's discoveries, in the General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters New General Catalogue . It was during John Herschel's time at the Cape that the great "Moon Hoax" was perpetrated. He was the first to notice the variability of Betelgeuse (1836), the first to measure the solar constant , and a pioneer of stellar photometry
