and examinateur d'admission As a teacher Hermite was inspiring. His correspondence with Stieltjes testifies to the great aid he gave those entering scientific life. His efforts in teaching were directed not towards too rigorous minuteness, but towards exciting admiration for things simple and beautiful. His published courses of lectures have exercised a wide influence. His important original contributions to pure mathematics, published in the leading mathematical journals of the world, dealt chiefly with Abelian and elliptic functions and the theory of numbers. In 1858 he solved the equation of the fifth degree by elliptic functions; and in 1873 he proved e BOREL, Charles Hermite in (Paris, 1902); CAPELLI, In commemorazione di Carlo Hermite in Acad. di sci. fis. e mat., Atti , VII (Naples, 1901); DARBOUX, Notice historique sur Charles Hermite in Memoires de l'Acad. des Sci. , XLIX (Paris, 1901); KNELLER, Das Christentum und die Vertreter der neueren Naturwissenschaft in Stimmen aus Maria Laach , supplement, no. 84-5. Charles Hermite 's father was Ferdinand Hermite and his mother was Madeleine Lallemand. Ferdinand Hermite was a trained engineer and he worked in this capacity in a salt mine near Dieuse. After he married Madeleine he joined in the draper's trade in which her family were involved. However he was an artistic man who always wanted to pursue art as a career. He had his wife look after the draper's business and he took up art. Charles was the sixth of his parents seven children and when he was about seven years old his parents left Dieuse and went to live in Nancy to where the business had moved. Education was not a high priority for Charles's parents but despite not taking too much personal interest in their children's education, nevertheless they did provide them with good schooling. Charles was something of a worry to his parents for he had a defect in his right foot which meant that he moved around only with difficulty. It was clear that this would present him with problems in finding a career. However he had a happy disposition and bore his disability with a cheerful smile. Galois had studied. In fact he was taught mathematics there by

Hermite, Charles (1822-1901)

French mathematician who did brilliant work in many branches of mathematics, but was plagued by poor performance in exams as a student. However, on his own, he mastered Lagrange's memoir on the solution of numerical equations and Gauss's Disquisitiones Arithmeticae. Hermite did pioneering work on Abelian functions e was a transcendental number (i.e., one that could not be the solution of any finite polynomial equation). He studied algebraic invariants and also investigated a class of differential equation now called the Hermite differential equation This equation was later found to arise in the quantum mechanical treatment of the simple harmonic oscillator The solutions are known as Hermite polynomials Hermite also discovered some of the properties of Hermitian matrices and solved the general quintic equation using elliptic modular functions

Hermite, Charles
F rench mathematician who was a principal contributor to the development of the theory of algebraic forms, the arithmetical theory of quadratic forms, and the theories of elliptic and Abelian functions. Much of his work was highly innovative, especially his solution of the quintic equation through elliptic modular functions, and his proof of the transcendence of e.
Between 1847 and 1851 he worked on the arithmetical theory of quadratic forms and the use of continuous variables. Then for he worked on the theory of invariants 1854-64.
In 1873 he worked out Hermitian forms (a complex generalization of quadratic forms) and Hermitian polynomials. In the same year, he showed that e, the base of natural logarithms, is transcendental. (Transcendental numbers are real or complex numbers that are not algebraic.)

Charles Hermite
Analysis takes back with one hand what it gives with the other. I recoil in fear and loathing from that deplorable evil: continuous functions with no derivatives.
