Olaus entered the gymnasium at Meldorf in 1849 and studied there until 1856. He then worked as an engineering apprentice at Flensburg for three years. While training for this occupation, Henrici's talents were recognised by Clebsch and he entered the Polytechnicum at Karlsruhe in 1859 to study mathematics. Clebsch persuaded Hesse to take Henrici on as a Ph.D. student at Heidelberg in 1862. Henrici then went to Berlin and studied under Weierstrass and Kronecker . After being appointed a dozent at Kiel University he found it impossible to make sufficient money to live on, so he came to England in 1865 with (perhaps overoptimistic) hope that life would be easier. In England he was barely able to make sufficient money to live on by teaching school level mathematics which at least, he later remarked, greatly helped him in becoming a good teacher. Hesse introduced him to Sylvester who in turn introduced him to Hirst , at that time the professor of mathematics at University College, London.

search visiting exhibitions online let's talk ... visiting the exhibition strange surfaces Mathematics Inspires Art The sculptor Henry Moore attended the Royal College of Art in South Kensington between 1921 and 1924. He was an avid museum-goer and was particularly struck by the mathematical models here. In the late 1930s he made a series of carved wood and string forms based on these surfaces and in 1960 an edition of 10 bronze forms. One of these, 'Stringed Figure 1938/60', is at the Tate Gallery. Inv. 1896-0506 Model of a Cubic Surface by Olaus Henrici, c.1875M Henrici taught mechanical engineering at the City and Guilds College, South Kensington, in the late 19th Century. This model follows the formula: xyz=k 3, (x+y+z-1)3. On it are drawn the 27 straight lines that can be found on a cubic surface, but in this case the lines form three groups of nine so appear as three. Mathematical surface models provided ideal material for the Surrealists. In 1936 they held a mould-breaking exhibition in London. The catalogue cover for this exhibition included illustrations of three surface models available in the late 19th century. Max Ernst, a well-known surrealist, frequently used mathematical surface models in unusual contexts, these have been identified recently by Gabriele Werner.
