He
Hébert, Jacques (1757-1794) Extreme Left-wing agitator who became the main voice of the sansculottes during the French Revolution. The Hébertists pressured the Revolutionary government into taking its most extrreme measures. His pseudonym was Père Duchesne Born into a bourgeois family, Hébert moved to Paris where he lived in poverty from 1780 until the outbreak of the Revolution in 1789, after which he began his career as a journalist, writing colurful, sacrilegious political satires. His newspaper, Le Père Duchesne , appeared in November 1790 and soon became the most widely read newspaper of the French Revolution, attacking the church and the aristocracy. As a representative to the Revolutionary Commune he helped plan the popular insurrection that overthrew the monarchy on Aug. 10, 1792. He had the Cathedral of Notre-Dame and some 2,000 other churches converted to Temples of Reason. In December Hébert was elected assistant procurator-general of the Commune, which had become the governing body of Paris. As a Jacobin deputy to the National Convention, he waged a fierce campaign against the Girondists, using Le Père Duchesne as a mouthpiece for the sansculottes, demanding the death sentence for the king and the establishment of a revolutionary government.

The Helmholtz centres do basic and preventive research as well as technical development for industry in natural science/technical as well as biological/medical fields. The Helmholtz centres have partnerships with universities for both research and for training. The centres are publicly funded, but scientifically independent and pursue the state's long-term research goals. Their research emphasizes - Structure of matter - Earth and environment - Transport and Space - Health - Energy - Key Technologies The organization promotes the exchange of experience and information among its members and coordinates their research and development work. The research centres focus on complex scientific/technological tasks and develop systems solutions. The association also operates major scientific instruments and installations.

While his classmates were reading Cicero or Vergil, Helmholtz calculated under his school desk the radiation path through telescopes.
4. Your physical aha-experience?
5. Do you have a favourite experiment?
All his life, Helmholtz was engaged in tests on sensations.
6. Are you also interested in a completely different speciality? Philosophy
8. Have you ever had a chemical kit? No, Helmholtz liked to play with building blocks.
17. Do you master a musical instrument? Helmholtz played the piano.

Bulletin of the History of Medicine - Volume 72, Number 3, Fall 1998, pp. 556-558
    The Johns Hopkins University Press

    Excerpt
This volume contains ten essays originally presented at a symposium in September 1994 at the Heidelberg Akademie der Wissenschaften convened to mark the [End Page 556] centennial of Hermann von Helmholtz's death. The editors modestly state (pp. v-vi) that their aim was neither to celebrate Helmholtz in an uncritical fashion nor to produce the sort of comprehensive and critical assessment that I have sought to do (David Cahan, ed., Hermann von Helmholtz and the Foundations of Nineteenth-Century Science [1993]). Instead, they have sought to give a general appreciation of Helmholtz's career and achievements in physics, physiology, mathematics, and culture in general, and to do so in a way that might attract the attention of those who are broadly interested in the history of science. In my judgment, this volume will indeed be of greater use to the general reader interested in knowing more about Helmholtz than to those with more specialized interests.
