Hermann von Helmholtz 's father was August Ferdinand Julius Helmholtz while his mother was Caroline Penn. Hermann was the eldest of his parents four children. His childhood had a strong influence on both his character and his later career. In particular the views on philosophy held by his father restricted Helmholtz's own views. Ferdinand Helmholtz had served in the Prussian army in the fight against Napoleon. Despite having a good university education in philology and philosophy, he became a teacher at Potsdam Gymnasium . It was a poorly paid job and Hermann was brought up in financially difficult circumstances. Ferdinand was an artistic man and his influence meant that Hermann grew up to have a strong love of music and painting. Caroline Helmholtz was the daughter of an artillery officer. From her Hermann inherited [1]:- ... the placidity and reserve which marked his character in later life. Hermann attended Potsdam Gymnasium where his father taught philology and classical literature. His interests at school were mainly in physics and he would have liked to have studied that subject at university. The financial position of the family, however, meant that he could only study at university if he received a scholarship. Such financial support was only available for particular topics and Hermann's father persuaded him that he should study medicine which was supported by the government.

    Helmholtz, Hermann von (1821-1894)

German physicist who first extended Joule's results to a general principle. He expressed the relationship between mechanics heat light electricity and magnetism by treating them all as manifestations of a single force He presented a mathematical proof for his Law of Conservation of Force in 1847). Helmholtz's use of the word "force" corresponds to what later became known as energy so his law actually amounted to a statement of the Law of conservation of energy Helmholtz sought to synthesize Maxwell's electromagnetic theory of light with the central force theorem. To accomplish this, he formulated an electrodynamic theory of action at a distance in which electric and magnetic forces were propagated instantaneously. He attempted to demonstrate that body heat and muscular action of animals could be produced by the oxidation of foodstuffs.

    Helmholtz, Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von
German physiologist, physicist, and inventor of the ophthalmoscope for examining the inside of the eye. He was the first to explain how the cochlea of the inner ear works, and the first to measure the speed of nerve impulses. In physics he formulated the law of conservation of energy, and worked in thermodynamics.
Helmholtz's scientific work in many fields was intended to prove that living things possess no innate vital force, and that their life processes are driven by the same forces and obey the same principles as nonliving systems. He arrived at the principle of conservation of energy 1847, observing that the energy of life processes is derived entirely from oxidation of food, and that animal heat and muscle action are generated by chemical changes in the muscles.
Helmholtz was born in Potsdam and studied at the Friedrich Wilhelm Institute in Berlin. He first became professor at Bonn 1855 and ended his career as director of the Physico-Technical Institute of Berlin from 1887.
Helmholtz invented the ophthalmoscope, which is used to examine the retina, 1851, and the ophthalmometer, which measures the curvature of the eye, 1855. He also revived the three-colour theory of vision first proposed 1801 by English physicist

    Helmholtz, Hermann von (1821-1894)
The leading German physicist of his day and an early advocate of the idea of panspermia . In a public lecture delivered in 1871 he said: Who can say whether the comets and meteors ... may not scatter germs of life wherever a new world has reached the stage in which it is a suitable dwelling place for organic beings? We might, perhaps, consider such life to be allied to ours, at least in germ, however different the form it might assume in adapting to its new dwelling place. Criticizing this hypothesis, which was put forward independently in the same year by William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), Frederick Zöllner argued that meteorites reach such high temperature on falling through the Earth's atmosphere that any organisms contained within them would be incinerated. In reply, Helmholtz pointed out that the interior of a meteorite would remain cool during its passage through the air and, in any case, organisms on the surface might be thrown free before the temperature became intolerable.
