Karl Marx:
The Story of His Life
Chapter One: Early Years
1. Home and School
KARL HEINRICH MARX was born on the 5th of May, 1818, in Trier. Owing to the confusion and destruction amongst the official Registers in the Rhineland during the troubled times which prevailed at the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries, little is known with certainty about his antecedents. Even the year in which Heinrich Heine was born is still the subject of dispute. With regard to Karl Marx, however, the situation is not quite so bad, for he was born in more peaceable times; but when a sister of his father died about fifty years ago leaving an invalid will, all the legal investigations to ascertain the lawful heirs were not able to discover the birth and death dates of her parents, that is to say, of the grandparents of Karl Marx. His grandfather was Marx Levi, but later on the Levi was dropped. This man was a Rabbi in Trier and is believed to have died in 1798. In any case, he was no longer alive in 1810, but his wife Eva Marx, nee Moses, was, and she is believed to have died in 1825. This pair had numerous children and two of them, Samuel and Hirschel, devoted themselves to scholarly professions. Samuel, who was born in 1781 and died in 1829, became the successor of his father as Rabbi in Trier. Hirschel, the father of Karl Marx, was born in 1782. He studied jurisprudence and became an advocate in Trier. Later he became a Justizrat and in 1824 he adopted Christianity, taking the name Heinrich Marx. He died in 1838.

Hero or Has Been?
Mendelssohn Reception in England and Germany in the 1840s

S D EMPSEY
UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER
Central to the generally accepted picture of Mendelssohn reception is the notion that his reputation declined sharply in the years following his death in 1847. From the 1960s to the present, Mendelssohn scholars have portrayed a composer who was held in high regard during his lifetime but posthumously downgraded and even derided. As George R. Marek put it, Mendelssohn was 'lifted too high by his contemporaries': thus it was 'inevitable that a reaction should set in. So it did, shortly after his death'. Similarly Eric Werner contends that the fate of Mendelssohn's music after his death was infinitely more controversial than during his life; an oversimplification of this issue is present even in the Preface to The Mendelssohn Companion (2001), where Douglass Seaton remarks that Mendelssohn was 'within his own lifetime perhaps more admired than any other composer in history', People overvalued Mendelssohn during his lifetime . . . no living artist had received so many tokens of veneration and enthusiasm from all quarters. At present, after his death, people

2 [CHART - ASIA].
Large engraved chart (plate size 52.5 x 60). With title below a seated sultan, surrounded by garlands of fruit and mounted tartars in battle scenes, with severed heads lying at the base; scales of longitude in the head and foot borders and latitude down the centre of the chart; 2 compasses (north above); rhumb lines; and 2 ships in the sea. Coloured by an early hand, the map in outline.
Since the plates for the map were not modified over the years, it is difficult to know which edition the present copy came from. The paper is unusually heavy, and if there is any watermark it is small and difficult to make out. Trimmed close to the plate edges and folded down the middle, with remains of a stub from mounting in the folio atlas or pilot guide and with two small holes through the fold. Otherwise a very good copy of an important map for the history of the exploration of the Arctic and east Asia.

School of Thomas Theodore Heine
Discussing the Fate of Germany
Artist: Heine, Thomas Theodore (Leipzig, 1867 - Stockholm, 1948) Date: Medium: Note: Thomas Theodore Heine: Undoubtedly the strongest force in early twentieth century German satirical art and caricature was the widely read periodical, Simplicissimus . Founded in Munich in 1896, Simplicissimus took aim at the reigning classes that promoted nationalism and militarism the generals, Junkers, monarchists, industrialists, and political and religious leaders. Writers for this periodical included Thomas Mann, Rainer Maria Rilke and Hermann Hesse. Its contributing artists were no less illustrious as they included Ernst Barlach, Alfred Kubin, Bruno Paul, Eduard Thony, Olaf Gulbransson and Thomas Theodore Heine. Thomas Theodore Heine, in fact, was a co-founder of Simplicissimus and epitomized the art of this journal for many of its readers. After training as a painter and working for illustrated papers such as Die Jugend , Heine joined Simpicissimus for its inaugural issue and contributed more to it than any other artist. He devised the magazine's symbol and specialized in producing the major cartoon for the front cover each week. He was at his satirical best when he portrayed irate Junkers, the over-stuffed Prussian military and God-fearing patriots in loud suits. Later, he became one of Germany's most outspoken critics of the Nazi party and produced numerous drawings ridiculing Hitler and fascist propaganda. Thus it was not surprising that when the Nazi regime gained power in 1933, Heine was forced to flee the country. He eventually found a safe haven in neutral Sweden. On his way there he was interrogated by the Gestapo: "'Were you a Socialist or a Communist in Germany?' they asked. 'Impressionist,' Heine replied." *
