Heine, Heinrich Eduard
German mathematician who completed the formulation of the notion of uniform continuity. He subsequently provided a proof of the classic theorem on uniform continuity of continuous functions, which has since become known as Heine's theorem.
Heine's theorem is sometimes known as the Heine-Borel theorem, because French mathematician Emile Borel formulated the covering property of uniform conformity, and proved it. Heine formulated the notion of uniform continuity and went on to prove the classic theorem of uniform continuity of continuous functions.

In (Click link for more info and facts about mathematical analysis) mathematical analysis , the Heine-Borel theorem , named after (Click link for more info and facts about Eduard Heine) Eduard Heine and (Click link for more info and facts about Félix Édouard Justin Émile Borel) Félix Édouard Justin Émile Borel , states:
A (A set whose members are members of another set; a set contained within another set) subset of the (Any rational or irrational number) real number s R is (A small cosmetics case with a mirror; to be carried in a woman's purse) compact (Click link for more info and facts about iff) iff it is (Click link for more info and facts about closed) closed and bounded.

The central idea arose from trying to find uniform bounds on the behavior of a (A mathematical relation such that each element of one set is associated with at least one element of another set) function over all points in a set. Such bounds could often be found for some small (Information that has become public) open (The difference in pitch between two notes) interval about any point in a set, but the question became, could these bounds somehow be combined to form global uniform bounds over the entire set? This led to open covers and the concept of compactness, which led to the actual theorem. The

German writer who lived in Paris after 1831. His romantic poems and social essays are marked by his love for the German land and people and derision for many modern German institutions. Encyclopedia Heine, Heinrich hīn rĭkh hī nə Buch der Lieder (1827, tr. Book of Songs, 1846), which contains the lyric cycles “Nordsee” and “Lyrisches Intermezzo,” shows his indebtedness to the romantic folk-song poets. Other collections of poems are Neue Gedichte Romanzero (1851), and Letzte Gedichte (1853). Schumann composed music for Heine's poems, as did Schubert, Mendelssohn, Liszt, and many others. His lyrics have been used in more than 3,000 compositions, the most popular perhaps being “Die Lorelei,” with melody by Friedrich Silcher (1789–1860). Heine's later poems and especially his prose works established him as a satirist of barbed wit and as an embittered critic of romanticism, of jingoistic patriotism, and of current social and political affairs. Most poignant are Die Harzreise [Harz journey] (1826) and Reisebilder [travel pictures] (1827–31), which combine poetry and prose.

Eduard Thony was born in Germany in 1866. When Albert Langen , started Simplicissimus in 1896, he invited Thony to contribute to the journal.
In 1906 several staff members, including Thony Olaf Gulbransson Ludwig Thoma Thomas Heine and Rudolf Wilke persuaded Albert Langen to change Simplicissimus into a joint stock company. This gave more power to the staff to control the direction of the journal.
His drawings appeared in the journal until it ceased publication in 1944. Thony specialized in caricatures of military types. He saw himself as an illustrator rather than a cartoonist and although he decided on the subject matter, did not write the captions. Eduard Thony died in 1950.

This composer webpage is in the process of being created. In time we will have further details about the availability of scores and performing material for the majority of works listed here. In the meantime, should you have any particular enquiry about any of the music listed here, then please contact either the publishers whose names are given or Bardic Edition for all other general enquiries. Following a recent trip to The Netherlands, we are pleased to report that several orchestral scores have now been located and will be made available for all those interested in performing music by this very neglected composer. Bernard van Dieren is one of those composers whose name is better known than his music. During his lifetime he was regarded as a somewhat mysterious figure. His music was praised by Walton and Warlock, by Busoni and Schoenberg, and yet today his works are scarcely ever heard.
Bernard Hélène Joseph van Dieren was born and educated in Rotterdam. In company with a fellow musician from Rotterdam, Frida Kindler (1879-1964) he moved to London in 1909 and they married on New Year’s Day 1910. Frida was a superb pianist, a pupil of Busoni; and the Italian master in turn was to have a profound influence on the young Bernard. His style changed rapidly from the conventional late Romantic to the Atonal, as epitomised by the songs of 1907-8 and the piano Sketches of 1910-1911, the latter being an idiom close to Busoni’s

Textual History and Critical Reception
Much attention has been paid to the events which preceded Heine's polemical 'revenge' on Platen, and with due cause: background forces and motivations are vital to a critical understanding of such an overtly contentious case, one which provoked such a vigorously negative reaction from all sides of the political, religious, and societal fences. Most critics now agree that Heine, wittingly or not, was the starting point for the conflict. The second volume of his Reisebilder , the Nordsee III from 1827, included a set of satirical verses written by Heine's friend Karl Lebrecht Immermann, in which the character and quality of Platen's Ghaselen (1821-24) were subjected to playful but nonetheless critical parody. Clearly directed at Platen and mocking his slavish imitation of Eastern poetic forms, Immermann's Xenien certainly angered the sensitive Platen, with the inclusion of lines like:

Des Knaben Wunderhorn and the German Volkslied in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries
Ann Schmiesing
In his review of the first volume of Des Knaben Wunderhorn , Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote in 1806, "By rights, every household in which cheerful people live should possess this book, and display it by a window, or under a mirror, or wherever else song and cookbooks tend to be placed, so that it may be opened at any moment of high or low spirits, when one wishes to find something harmonious or inspiring" (Jenaer Allgemeine Literaturzeitung 137-38; qtd. in Rölleke 29).* Goethe's enthusiastic assessment of the collection can be used as a point of departure for discussing several related facets of the Des Knaben Wunderhorn and the German Volkslied in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. For despite considerable criticism, the collection became wildly popular, as Goethe's description of the book as a household staple indicates, although in fact it never became a staple literary work among the common people whose lives its songs allegedly reflected, but instead primarily influenced nineteenth-century artists, composers, and writers. Moreover, Goethe's curious suggestion that the book be placed wherever song or cookbooks generally are displayed underscores the diverse nature of the collection. For although it gained a reputation as a unified collection of folksongs, Des Knaben Wunderhorn is in fact a random assortment of various types of songs, including hymns, children's songs, war songs, allegorical poetry, craftsmen songs, ballads, and idylls. And as these various forms suggest, the songs treat themes ranging from the perils of the battlefield to the delights of the kitchen, and from earthly passion to heavenly devotion. In what follows, I shall discuss the nineteenth-century reception to this varied work, as well as examine the late-eighteenth-century models which Clemens Brentano and Achim von Arnim took as their inspiration. Because my field of specialty within German literature lies within the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, I cannot comment authoritatively on Gustav Mahler's use of the songs; however, a few of the examples I will use in speaking of
