Mathematics Colloquium, Spring 2004 Special Lecture presented by Saul Schleimer University of Illinois at Chicago Heegaard splittings, the curve complex, and hyperbolic geometry Defined by Poul Heegaard in his thesis in 1898, Heegaard splittings of three-manifolds are still not completely understood. There are deep connections between these decompositions of three-manifolds and the algebraic, combinatorial, and geometric structure of the ambient space. I will discuss just a few of these connections while outlining the "modern" theory of Heegaard splittings. Almost normal Heegaard splittings Abstract: The study of three-manifolds via their Heegaard splittings was initiated by Poul Heegaard in 1898 in his thesis. Our approach to the subject is through almost normal surfaces, as introduced by Hyam Rubinstein [Geo. Top. (Athens), 1993] and distance, as introduced by John Hempel [Topology, 2001]. Among the results presented is a proof that every closed, orientable three-manifold has only finitely many Heegaard splittings with distance greater than 4, a new recognition algorithm for surface bundles over the circle, and a series of results which bound the distance of a splitting in terms of its structure as an almost normal surface. Laugardagur 17. október 1998. (Menningarblað ) FERHYRNINGAR, HALASTJÖRNUR OG GRUNNMASKÍNUR TVEGGJA ALDA ÁRTÍÐ STEFÁNS BJÖRNSSONAR eftir Einar H. Guðmundsson Introductio in tetragonometriam frá 1780 er höfuðrit Stefáns og jafnframt fyrsta prentaða bókin um "æðri stærðfræði" eftir íslenskan höfund. Stefán Björnsson hlaut gullverðlaun Hafnarháskóla í stærðfræði 1793 og verður það að teljast mikið afrek af manni á áttræðisaldri. FYRIR réttum tvö hundruð árum, hinn 15. október 1798, lést í Kaupmannahöfn Stefán Björnsson reiknimeistari nær áttræður að aldri. Hann var góður stærðfræðingur, vel að sér í eðlisfræði og stjörnufræði, áhugasamur um forn fræði og á efri árum afkastamikill höfundur fræði- og fræðslurita. Stefán var tvímælalaust sá maður íslenskur sem lærðastur var í stærðfræðilegum lærdómslistum á átjándu öld. Þrátt fyrir góðar gáfur átti hann samt erfitt uppdráttar og mun þar hafa skipt mestu að hann var með afbrigðum óþjáll og einrænn í skapi. Hafði það veruleg áhrif á líf hans og varð meðal annars til þess að hann yfirgaf Ísland rúmlega þrítugur og settist að í Kaupmannahöfn. Hann virðist þó ávallt hafa haldið einhverju sambandi við landa sína og greinar hans í ritum Lærdómslistafélagsins bera vott um einlægan áhuga á því að uppfræða þá í anda upplýsingarinnar. Stefán Björnsson fæddist á Ystugrund í Skagafirði hinn 15. janúar 1721 (eða 1720), sonur hjónanna Björns Skúlasonar prests í Flugumýrarþingum og Halldóru Stefánsdóttur lögréttumanns Rafnssonar. Eftir glæstan námsferil í Hólaskóla stundaði hann nám í guðfræði við Hafnarháskóla og lauk þaðan cand. theol.-prófi á mettíma árið 1747. Eftir að heim var komið var hann um skeið djákni á Munkaþverá en tók svo við starfi rektors á Hólum þegar Gunnar Pálsson, bróðir Bjarna landlæknis, lét af störfum árið 1753. Ári síðar kom til alvarlegs missættis milli Stefáns og Jóns Magnússonar stiftprófasts, bróður Skúla fógeta, og var skaplyndi Stefáns að hluta kennt um "þvíat hann var styrdlyndr ok óþydr" eins og segir í Árbókum Espólíns. Afleiðingin af þessum skærum varð sú að Stefán hraktist vegabréfslaus til útlanda og hálffertugur að aldri hóf hann nýtt líf í Kaupmannahöfn, settist að nýju á skólabekk og lagði stund á stærðfræðilegar lærdómslistir við Hafnarháskóla.
