Chapter 6
BRUIN SPIRIT VS. COUNCIL POWER (1929-1940)
(Second Part)
As must all academic years, however, even the eventful one of 1935-36 came to a close. The Student Council was graduated to a different world outside the gates. So was a good part of the Bruin staff. Quiet reigned for two years. In 1938 the Student Council rejected Publications Board's unanimous recommendation of Bill Brown for editor and Everett Carter for managing editor. The Council said it also wanted to consider Dan Wilkes, a former Bruin staffer who was then the Los Angeles Times correspondent on the campus, but Wilkes said he didn't want either of the jobs, and Brown and Carter were named after all. (CDB, 5/5/38 and 5/10/38.) That month outgoing business manager Charles Ferguson gave incoming Editor Bill Brown and incoming business manager Seymour Knee some advice on how to handle campus politicians, in what was a then-traditional last-issue-of-the-year didactic editorial:
Any influence you have upon the Bruin you must look upon as a student trust not lightly to be regarded and never to be violated. You must protect the apparent and deep potential power of the collegiate press by tactfully observing your trust at all times . . . Never knowingly stick the Daily Bruin into the lion's mouth simply because of any personal bias. Be careful not to let trivial things undermine the substance of the Bruin. Don't do as we did and alienate most of the people we had to work with by piercing their sensitive little egos. Wounded vanity will blind the average man every time so that he cannot see anything more basic than retribution. (CDB, 5/12/38.)

Department of Chemistry
Congratulations to Professor Hanadi Sleiman who was named a William Dawson Scholar, effective January 2004. This award recognizes the scholarly accomplishments of outstanding junior professors at McGill, and bears a distinction equivalent to that of a Tier II Canada Research Chair. Professor Sleiman's research lies at the nexus of synthetic chemistry, biological chemistry, and materials science, studying the interaction of small organic and inorganic molecules with DNA, and synthesizing advanced materials using small molecules and polymers as building blocks. She is also acclaimed as a teacher, having won the Principal's Prize for Excellence in Teaching (Assistant Professor category) in 2002.

ROBERT(5) 1782-1862 Robert was born in Hampshire County the oldest son of "Revolutionary John". He was raised in Randolph County, where he would also marry and father his children; then he relocated to Braxton County. He was married twice. First to Rachel Stalnaker, daughter of John I. Stalnaker and Margaret Elizabeth White, forging the first of many unions between the Stalnakers and Chenoweths. His sister, Mary, would marry Rachel's brother, John White Stalnaker, a year later. John and Rachel had three daughters before she died at age 30. Robert then married his second wife, Edith Skidmore, daughter of John Skidmore and Mary Magdalene Hinkle and cousin to the wives of his brothers, John and Jehu. In their 46 years of marriage they had 12 children, in addition to raising Robert's first three. Although Robert was the fourth in a line of first-born sons, the first nine of Robert's children were all daughters. Jim Loats Named 2001 Distinguished Teacher In 1991, the MAA Board of Governors established Section Awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching to recognize excellence in mathematics teaching at the post-secondary level. The Rocky Mountain Section Award is named in honor of Burton W. Jones, a lifelong advocate of excellence in teaching and strong supporter of the MAA. In addition to being recognized with a cerrtificate and a check, award recipients are invited to deliver the opening address at the next section meeting. Criteria for the DTA award require more than effective teaching. Awardees are expected to be outstanding teachers who are widely recognized, within and beyond their own institution, for extraordinary success in teaching. Professor Jim Loats of the Metropolitan State College of Denver easily meets every measure of these criteria. Jim has compiled a long list of accomplishments that set him apart as a mathematics educator. He served as the leader of the Rocky Mountain Teacher Education Collaborative Mathematics Team for five years, and as co-PI of a number of other grants aimed at improving mathematics education in our region. He has been a member of the MAA Committee on the Mathematical Preparation of Teachers, and given numerous presentations on teaching. Jim is also the co-author of Algebra Unplugged
