61. THE MYSTERY READER Reviews: Skull Session By Daniel Hecht
The Mystery Reader – the latest reviews and news of current mystery novels.
http://www.themysteryreader.com/hecht-skull.html
Skull Session by Daniel Hecht (Signet, $6.99, GV) ISBN 0-451-19592-2 A hero with Tourette's syndrome – at first glance that might seem like a cynical marketing gimmick. Quite to the contrary, Paul Skoglund, the protagonist of Skull Session , comes alive as a complex and fascinating character. Paul has spent a lot of time balancing between the need for drugs to keep his condition manageable and keeping the dose low enough to allow him a more normal, and creative, mental state. The Tourette's doesn't make it easy to find or keep work, so when the aunt he barely knows asks him to take charge of setting her vandalized house in order, he agrees to take the job. He is shocked at the state of the house. The damage is much more than ordinary vandalism; someone has unleashed a great deal of rage and strength in the near total destruction of everything in the house. Even more disturbing is state police investigator Morgan Ford's theory that the house is somehow linked to the disappearances of several local teenagers. As Paul learns more of the house's, and his family's, history, troubling possibilities begin to occur to him. His family has been the center of violent tragedy several times, and the pattern seems to be continuing. Skull Session can refer to brainstorming, or solving a puzzle. It also applies to the various investigations of the brain and the power of the brain throughout the book. Paul has spent a great deal of time researching neurological function and disorders, both because of his own problems and because his son seems to have inherited some of these problems.

This paper solves the open question of whether the Perfect Phylogeny Haplotyping (PPH) Problem can be solved in linear time. The method presented is simple enough for easy implementation, and our implementation will be available on the web shortly. This version is actually an extension of what will appear in RECOMB, due to page limitations on the RECOMB proceedings.

    "A powerful police procedural"
In 1999 in White Plains, New York, New York State Police Detective Morgan "Mo" Ford and his partner Mike St. Pierre become involved with the use of deadly force. Mo kills violent rape suspect Big Willie, the cop's second deadly incident. Though exonerated, Mo's boss Marden warns him to watch his butt as Westchester County DA Flannery wants to hang him. Marden approves sick leave so Mo can recover from the injuries he received from the refrigerator built Big Willie. Before Mo can go on leave, he is asked by White Plains Police to come to a murder scene. To his chagrin, the victim Daniel O'Connor is strung up with the same M.O. employed by the Howdy Doody serial killer who murdered thirteen people in the New York-New Jersey area. However, the FBI arrested the Howdy Doody Killer three months ago. Mo wonders if there is copy cat murderer or if the wrong person is behind bars. Meanwhile Flannery tells Mo he wants him on the case because if something goes wrong he has the perfect fall guy. This reprint of a powerful police procedural will have readers up late in a one sitting read from the moment Mo chokes Big Willie out for the count. The story line works on two levels, the investigation and the politics. PUPPETS is as good a serial killer tale as readers will find. An added bonus for readers is the as fascinating psychological thriller SKULL SESSION will be reprinted also.

On "More Light! More Light!" Daniel Hoffman t times Hecht’s dramatic lyrics armored in biblical allusions remind one of the diction and vehemence of [Robert] Lowell ("These yes, which many have praised as gay, / Are the stale jellies of lust in which Adam sinned"). But in poems that dramatize the hard hours of his generation’s history, Hecht speaks with a tragic irony that is his own unmistakeable voice. "More Light! More Light! plays out against the implications of Goethe’s dying cry two episodes from history: the burning at the stake of an accused heretic in the Middle Ages, and this: [Hoffman quotes the two stanzas before the last.] In the absence of the light of either Goethe’s humanism or the Word, the Pole’s refusal may suggest that he, like their Nazi captor, is too scornful of Jews to kill them himself. As for them, "Much casual death had drained their souls away," and they obey the order to bury the Pole. But then the Nazi makes them dig him out and get back in. The gravity of Hecht’s quatrains molds this fable of "casual death" as unassuageable, without transcendence. From Daniel Hoffman, "Our Common Lot," in Daniel Hoffman, ed.
