    HEATH OF COLLINGBOURNE KINGSTON, WILTSHIRE, ENGLAND
    TO HOWICK, AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND
    Thomas HEATH was born in 1814 at Collingbourne Kingston, Wiltshire, base-born son of Elizabeth HEATH. In later records he gives his father as Thomas STONE but this has not been proven. In 1847 he married Jane BARTLETT from the nearby village of Enford in Wiltshire. They left London for New Zealand with Major Gray and a party of 77 Fencibles (pensioned soldiers) with 58 women and 109 children on the SIR GEORGE SEYMOUR an 867-ton barque in the command of Captain MILLMAN. Thomas and Jane were posted to Howick, near Auckland. Here he served seven years with the Royal New Zealand Fencibles, and was for some time a vestryman of All Saints Church. He was often mentioned in the diaries of Rev Vicesimus LUSH, which have been published. By 1897 Thomas was the last surviving of the Fencibles. He died in 1902 and Jane died in 1913. They are buried at All Saints Church in Howick but unfortunately there is no headstone. Thomas and Jane had seven children;

    The Archaeology of Slave Life at Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest by Barbara Heath ISBN 0-8139-1867-7
    LIKE MONTICELLO, Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest offers a significant archeological view of slave life at the turn of the nineteenth century in rural Virginia. In Hidden Lives , Barbara J. Heath re-creates the daily life of slaves at Jefferson's second home from 1773, the year he inherited the plantation, until 1812, when his reorganization of its landscape resulted in the destruction of a slave quarter. Drawing on census data, letters, memoranda, and other primary material, Heath describes the slave community's family ties, the agricultural cycle of work, and the sickness and health care they experienced. Her portrait is enhanced by fresh archaeological findings and a wealth of illustrations, including site and contemporary maps, ../images of slaves at work and at home, artifacts, and interpretive drawings. By looking at the social meaning of buildings, yards, and artifacts, Heath presents new interpretations of how individuals used materials to create a sense of self and community, how they acquired belongings, and how they safeguarded them. For visitors to historic sites and students and scholars of archaeology, Heath's book offers a visual and textual exploration of complex relationships within the plantation and of the resulting choices, compromises, and limitations that Jefferson's slaves negotiated in the process of making a home within the confines of institutionalized slavery.

    By Capt. Wilson, Eliza is understood to have had two daughters. Overview of Eliza Heath Eliza Heath is mentioned in "Records of the Heath Family, 1913" as follows:
    "About 1777 he ( James Heath ) married Eliza or Elizabeth Thomas, daughter of Rev.-Thomas, D.D., a Welsh clergyman, by whom he had one son, George Heath . Owing to his misconduct, his wife appears to have left him, when her son was about two or three years old, and returned to her own family in Wales. She subsequently "married" a Capt. Wilson, and by him had at least two daughters. No evidence of a divorce is known to exist, for which, at that period, a private Act of Parliament was required. She is believed to have died around 1835." John Heath, in the later book "

    The Battle of Blore Heath September 23, 1459 After four years of uneasy peace the King presided over a wasting realm. No parliament had been summoned for three years, the country was sadly divided and distressed. The Yorkists were armed, armies were marching across all England. Lord Audley had recently raised a Lancastrian army centered round Market Drayton, and the Queen -through whom the King ruled- sent him orders to intercept Lord Salisbury, who was marching from Yorkshire to join the Duke of York at Ludlow. The two armies met head on two and a half miles east of Market Drayton at a place called Blore Heath. Salisbury, with 3,000 troops, was outnumbered by more than two to one, but could not avoid giving battle. YORKISTS LANCASTRIANS Sir Christopher Conyers of Sokebourne, Durham Sir Henry Bromflete, Wymington, Bedford Sir John Conyers of Hornby, Yorkshire Sir Robert del Booth of Wilmslow, Cheshire (killed in battle) Sir Walter Devereux of Weobley, Herefordshire (killed in battle) Sir John Bourchier of West Horsley, Surrey

    Original Audience
    Most students have some knowledge of Puritans and their role in the settlement of New England, but very few are familiar with pioneering Cavaliers like Morton. His values, therefore, and their relation to the more familiar swashbuckling Cavaliers of Europe need to be carefully explained. According to his own self-description, Morton was the university educated son of a soldier, devoted to the British crown and old English ways, and a staunch supporter of the Church of England, its liturgy, and its holy days. His portrait of the Indians is an attempt to show how, despite their uncivilized state, they share many values with the traditional Englishmen whom he takes to be his audience. The Indians' personal modesty, hospitality to strangers, respect for authority, and even religious views mirror those of England, and their contentment surpasses that of the English because of their greater closeness to nature. They are swashbucklers without the trappings of Europe, indulging in pleasures because they are natural and upholding authority because it allows indulgence. By contrast, the Pilgrims appear to be ill-educated rabble-rousers who despise all tradition and authority. Devoid even of common humanity, they serve their own self-glorifying appetites and deny the bounty that nature has left open to all.
    Questions for Reading and Discussion/ Approaches to Writing
    Morton is best read beside Bradford to bring out the full contrast between their views of Cavaliers, Indians, and Pilgrims. Morton also provides an interesting contrast in style to Bradford. Both works are highly rhetorical, but where Bradford uses his rhetoric to magnify God and humbly to minimize his poor persecuted people, Morton uses his to satirize those same people and to flaunt the superiority of his own wit and learning. All students should be able to pick out the clear cases of Morton's fictionalizing, especially in the account of Standish's response to Morton's escape, and some may see how he uses

    "On the 17th, Private Thomas K. Heath, of Company A, died at 9 o'clock P. M. He had been sick since coming on board, and remained below in his bunk, apparently frightened by the rolling and pitching of the ship. At last he was brought on deck, where, as soon as he beheld the broad expanse of water around him, with the mountainous waves heaving like a seething cauldron, he seemed so overcome by fright that immediately he sank upon the deck, and expired within a few hours. Under the extraordinary circumstances the death of this comrade aboard ship seemed a pitiful one. At 10 o'clock on the morning of the 18th, we gave the body of our soldier a burial at sea. Having been sewed up in his blanket, with a sixty-pound shot at the foot, the body was laid upon a plank an covered with the stars and stripes. Adjt. Thomas A. Henderson
