Stephen Hawking's ex-wife writes tell-all
Jane Hawking chronicles the misery of her marriage
By Craig Offman
www.salon.com
August 12, 1999
Web posted at: 3:08 p.m. EDT (1908 GMT) (SALON) In 1990, world-renowned physicist Stephen Hawking did what looked like a bad, bad thing. The author of "A Brief History of Time," who suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, dropped his wife of almost 30 years and took off with a younger woman his nurse, Elaine Mason. But as is revealed in Jane Hawking's new tell-all, "Music to Move the Stars," their marriage was much more complicated than anybody knew. Published in Britain by Macmillan, the 610-page tome of woe hits the shelves on Friday. In it, Jane Hawking chronicles the hardships of marriage to a famous genius with a famous degenerative disease. She is startlingly frank about her feelings, calling her ex-husband an "all-powerful emperor" and a "masterly puppeteer." She notes at one point, "It was becoming very difficult unnatural, even to feel desire for someone with the body of a Holocaust victim and the undeniable needs of an infant." Desperate for emotional and physical fulfillment, she says, in 1985 she began an affair with a family friend, musician Jonathan Hellyer-Jones, whom she had met in 1977 after joining a local choir. Her husband gave tacit sanction to the relationship; the pair married in 1996.

Hawking, Stephen Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays
Genre Collection (Essays) (182 pp.) Essay (182 pp.) Keywords Body Self-Image Caregivers Communication Disability ... Technology Summary This remarkable collection of essays, both personal and scientific, is written by a remarkable man, Stephen Hawking, theoretical physicist and Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University (a chair once held by Isaac Newton). Unlike Hawking's earlier bestseller, A Brief History of Time, which was written for the lay public to explain current theories of the universe, this book is a mix of essays, speeches, and even a radio show transcript that were originally produced from 1976 to 1992 and whose intended audiences were varied, although none of the works are purely technical. Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease in the USA, motor neuron disease in the UK) at the age of 21 during his first year of graduate school at Cambridge, though he had already noticed weakness the prior year at Oxford. As he describes in "My Experience with ALS," Hawking experienced a rapid deterioration of function and hence depression.

Quantum cosmology and eternal inflation
Author: Alexander Vilenkin
Comments: To appear in "The Future of Theoretical Physics and Cosmology", proceedings of the conference in honor of Stephen Hawking's 60'th birthday
This contribution consists of two parts. In the first part, I review the tunneling approach to quantum cosmology and comment on the alternative approaches. In the second part, I discuss the relation between quantum cosmology and eternal inflation. In particular, I discuss whether or not we need quantum cosmology in the light of eternal inflation, and whether or not quantum cosmology makes any testable predictions.

76. A Brief History Of Stephen Hawking
Brief interview and look at his theories.
http://vassa.net/hawking.htm
A brief history of Stephen Hawking Our modern day Einstein? It's all "media hype", says Stephen Hawking. He is a rare celebrity scientist. He's even had a TV cameo role in Star Trek in which he plays poker with scientific icons Sir Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. Yet when asked about comparisons between himself and the two scientists, he calls it all "media hype." Once asked how he felt about being labeled the world's smartest person, he responded: "It is very embarrassing. It is rubbish, just media hype. They just want a hero, and I fill the role model of a disabled genius. At least I am disabled, but I am no genius." Part of Hawking's celebrity stems from his accomplishments in the face of physical adversity. Hawking has ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig's disease, a neuromuscular disease that progressively weakens muscle control. As a 21-year-old graduate student in cosmology at Cambridge University, doctors predicted an early death for him. Today, he's 56 and married with three children. He gets around in a wheelchair, and after completely losing the use of his vocal chords in an operation to assist his breathing in 1985, he communicates through a computer. A speech synthesizer "speaks" for him after he punches in what he wants to say, selecting words in the computer software by pressing a switch with his hand. Unfortunately, it makes him sound like he has an American accent, he says.

April 2002 Leaping the Abyss
Stephen Hawking on black holes, unified field theory, and Marilyn Monroe.
By Gregory Benford
Stephen Hawking seemed slightly worse, as always. It is a miracle that he has clung to life for over 20 years with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Each time I see him I feel that this will be the last, that he cannot hold on to such a thin thread for much longer. Hawking turned 60 in January. Over the course of his brilliant career, he has worked out many of the basics of black hole physics, including, most strikingly, his prediction that black holes aren’t entirely black. Instead, if they have masses equivalent to a mountain’s, they radiate particles of all kinds. Smaller holes would disappear in a fizz of radiation a signature that astronomers have searched for but so far not found. The enormous success of Hawking’s 1988 book, A Brief History of Time , has made him a curious kind of cultural icon. He wonders how many of the starlets and rock stars who mentioned the book on talk shows actually read it. With his latest book

79. L'univers De Stephen Hawking
http://www.astrosurf.org/lombry/hawking-hommage.htm
