THE LEHMERS AT BERKELEY Derrick H. Lehmer (1905-1991) and Emma Trotskaia Lehmer (1906- ) “I hear that at the Univ. of Illinois they are planning to build a very fast all purpose machine 100 or 1000 times as fast as Livac. You planned to build an enormously fast special machine, what happened to it?” The Bancroft Library's collection of Dick Lehmer’s correspondence with Paul Erdos – the famous “man who loved only numbers” and one of the most brilliant and eccentric of mathematicians – consists of 7 autograph manuscript and typescript letters, and 1 autograph post card, ranging in date from 1952 to 1961 (some undated). In the example below, Erdos demonstrates a characteristic mix of mathematical and personal interests. PAUL ERDOS Autograph letter to D. H. Im Mai 1921 wurde Hasse in Marburg promoviert und im Februar 1922 folgte die Habilitation. Im Herbst 1922 erhielt er eine Stelle als Privatdozent in Kiel, und zur selben Zeit heiratete er Clara Ohle. Ostern 1925 wurde er als Ordinarius nach Halle berufen. Zugleich wurde er Direktor des Mathematischen Institutes in Halle, neben Heinrich Jung. 1930 übernahm er die Nachfolge von Hensel in Marburg und 1934 die von Hermann Weyl in Göttingen, der wegen den Entwicklungen im Zusammenhang mit den Nazis emigrierte. Nach dem Kriege wirkte Hasse in Berlin, zuerst ab 1946 an der Deutschen Akademie der Wissenschaften und später an der Humboldt-Universität. 1950 nahm Hasse einen Ruf an die Universität Hamburg an, wo er bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahre 1966 blieb.

The solution to this type of equation was fully investigated by G. Floquet in 1883. Floquet's characteristic equation is an eigenvalue equation that arises in the determination of a solution to the differential equation. Floquet's theorem states that when the roots of the characteristic equation are distinct, the solutions satisfying the differential equation are linearly independent. Floquet's characteristic equation has found wide application in stability theory and wave propagation in periodic structure spanning many fields of science and engineering. We trace the history of Floquet's characteristic equation beginning in the late nineteenth century through the twentieth century and finally into the new millennium. Helmut Hasse Geboren am 25. August 1898 in Kassel, Deutschland Gestorben am 26. Dezember 1979 in Ahrensburg, Deutschland Helmut Hasse wurde als Sohn eines Richters geboren. Er besuchte bis 1913 verschiedene Schulen um Kassel, zog dann mit seiner Familie nach Berlin und ging aufs Fichte-Gymnasium, bevor er sich im Ersten Weltkrieg freiwillig zur Marine meldete. 1917/18 war er in Kiel stationiert und konnte den Vorlesungen von Toeplitz beiwohnen. Später besuchte er die Universität von Göttingen und wurde dort unter anderem von Hilbert unterrichtet. Den größten Einfluß übte jedoch Hecke auf ihn aus. Hasse ging schließlich 1920 nach Marburg, wo er das "Hasse-Prinzip" entdeckte, das auch Teil seiner Doktorarbeit "Über die Darstellbarkeit von Zahlen durch quadratische Formen im Körper der rationalen Zahlen" wurde. Ebenso erschien es in seiner Habilitationsthese "Über die Äquivalenz quadratischer Formen im Körper der rationalen Zahlen". Ab 1922 hielt Hasse Vorlesungen an der Universität zu Kiel und ging drei Jahre später als Professor nach Halle. Hasse erweiterte Webers Arbeit über Klassenkörpertheorie, die auch durch Kollegen wie Hilbert und Kronecker Unterstützung erfuhr. In Halle erzielte er fundamentale Resultate über die Struktur einfacher Algebren und setzte diese Arbeit in Marburg mit Kollegen fort, um die komplette Bestimmung der "Brauer-Gruppe" eines algebraischen Zahlenkörpers zu vollenden. Weitere Arbeit umfaßte auch den Beweis einer Analogie der "Riemann-Hypothese" für Zeta-Funktionen elliptischer Kurven.
