"Dr Fischer's book fills an important gap in the history of individual 20th century scientists. It is also of interest because it documents the immense activity of a very hard-working scientist who did not make any spectacular discoveries and yet contributed to many areas of physical science." Roy H Garstang
Emeritus Professor, University of Colorado

Early life
Douglas Hartree was born in Cambridge United Kingdom . His father William was a lecturer in engineering at the University , and his mother Eva Rayner was president of the National Council of Women and mayor of the city. One of his great-grandfathers was Samuel Smiles . He was the oldest of three sons, although his two older brothers did not survive to adulthood. He attended St John's College, Cambridge but the first world war interrupted his studies. He joined a group working on anti-aircraft ballistics under A. V. Hill , where he gained considerable skill and an abiding interest in practical calculation and numerical methods, executing most of his own work with pencil and paper. edit

James Clerk Maxwell
James Clerk Maxwell was born in Edinburgh in 1831. In 1847 he went to Edinburgh University where he studied under William Hamilton. He came to Cambridge in 1850, first to Peterhouse and then Trinity College. In 1854 he graduated with a degree as second wrangler in mathematics. Having held chairs at Marischal College, Aberdeen and King's College London Maxwell was elected to the Royal Society in 1861 and in 1871 he became the first Cavendish Professor of Physics at Cambridge. Maxwell's most celebrated contributions to physics were his work on the kinetic theory of gases and the theory of electromagnetism. The latter included the famous Maxwell equations which admit solutions which are self-propagating waves travelling at the speed of light. He also made contributions to the areas of optics and colour vision. He died in 1879 aged 48.

Douglas Hartree 's parents were Eva Rayner, who played a major role in public life being president of the National Council of Women and mayor of Cambridge, and William Hartree who taught in the engineering laboratory a the University of Cambridge. Eva and William had three sons; Douglas was the oldest and both of his two younger brothers died before reaching adulthood. Douglas's school education was in Cambridge and Petersfield. It was at Bedales school that he first became interested in mathematics and this was due to the excellent teaching of the subject at that school. He entered St John's College Cambridge in 1915 but World War I interrupted his studies and he joined a team studying anti-aircraft gunnery. He returned to Cambridge after the war and graduated in 1921 but, perhaps because of his interrupted studies, he only obtained a Second Class degree in Natural Sciences. However he went on to obtain a doctorate in 1926 and, after being a Fellow of St John's College (1924-27) and Christ's College (1928-29), he was appointed professor of applied mathematics at the University of Manchester. During his studies at Cambridge he married Elaine Charlton of Keswick in 1923. They had one daughter and two sons.

    Hartree, Douglas Rayner (1897-1958)
Mathematician and physicist, born in Cambridge. He graduated from Cambridge after working on the science of anti-aircraft gunnery during World War 1. He was professor of applied mathematics and theoretical physics at Manchester (192945), returning to Cambridge as professor of mathematical physics in 1946. His work was mainly on computational methods applied to a wide variety of problems, ranging from atomic physics, where he invented the method of the self-consistent field in quantum mechanics, to the automated control of chemical plants. At Manchester he developed the differential analyser, an analogue computer, and was deeply involved in the early days of the electronic digital computer.
