English scientist Thomas Harriot (c.1560-1621) left his scientific and mathematical findings in a jumble of manuscript sheets that have not been previously published in a form relevant to his method of investigation. Stedall (history of science, Queen's College, Oxford, UK) includes some 140 translated and annotated of the sheets concerned with the solution and structure of polynomial equations. In her introductory essay she explains the importance of the work to mathematics, discussing which contributions were new and how it relates to the works of such figures as Vi¨nte, Warner, and Torporley. His close connections with Walter Ralegh and the Earl of Northumberland in the later years of Elizabeth's reign, and the associated suspicion that fell upon him after the accession of James I to the unified British crown, mean that Harriot has a solid, if subsidiary, place in the English political history of the period. ...

Harriot was a protégé of Sir Walter Raleigh and Henry Percy, ninth Earl of
Northumberland. He knew John Dee and Richard Hakluyt, Christopher Marlowe
and Tycho Brahe, Kepler and Galileo. He was a polymath who studied the sciences,
notably mathematics and navigation, he was a pioneering ethnographer and linguist,
and he observed the heavens with a telescope at the same time as Galileo.

At a time of brutal violence between colonists and native inhabitants the text is remarkable for its sympathy towards Algonquian beliefs and customs. It also contains what may be the first printed promotional literature in English for tobacco by an English writer, and Harriot and Ralegh were subsequently credited with the introduction of pipe tobacco smoking into England from Virginia. The Report was much published subsequently.

Except for A Brief and True Report, Harriot published no books. At his death he left a large number of manuscripts on various scientific subjects, and over the past three centuries these have slowly come into the mainstream of historical research. Harriot studied optics (about which he corresponded with Johannes Kepler) and had discovered what is now known as Snell's Law of refraction before Snell did, he made important contributions to algebra, and, from 1609 to 1613, he made numerous telescopic observations. His telescopic drawing of the Moon of early August 1609 is the first on record and preceded Galileo's study of the Moon by several months. Several of Harriot's Moon Drawings are available.

  • The Misfortunes of Arthur
    The Misfortunes of Arthur
in light of these other works allows an Arthur figure to emerge that, one, is quite different than the more familiar chivalric, glorious king and, two, is helpful in piecing together the multifaceted event of English Renaissance imperialism.
In her study of the dramas of Ben Jonson, Rebecca Ann Bach writes that “the plays Jonson set in England are home-making fantasies that envision England in terms of its colonial spaces and as a colonial space” (115). Hughes’s play operates in similar fashion, using, in its case, the Arthur story to address contemporary colonialism. This essay argues that Hughes’s The Misfortunes of Arthur uses the Arthur legend to display a pronounced anxiety about imperial efforts and to warn against pursuing shortsightedly these efforts at the expense of domestic stability and security. Presented for Queen Elizabeth on February 28, 1588 at Greenwich Palace, the play was penned by eight men of Gray’s Inn, Francis Bacon notably one of them, but editor Brian Jay Corrigan names Thomas Hughes as “the main author of the play” (3). Corrigan also notes that

The Partnership of Art and Science: The Moon of Cigoli and Galileo
In 1612 Galileo wrote to his friend, the painter Lodovico Cardi, known as Cigoli: The statue does not have its relief by virtue of being wide, long and deep but by virtue of being light in some places and dark in others. And one should note as proof of this that only two of its three dimensions are actually exposed to the eye: length and width (which is the superficies . . . that is to say, periphery or circumference). For, of the objects appearing and seen, we see nothing but their superficies; their depth can not be perceived by the eye because our vision does not penetrate opaque bodies. The eye then sees only length and width and never thickness. Thus, since thickness is never exposed to view, nothing but length and width can be perceived by us in a statue. We know of depth, not as a visual experience per se and absolutely but only be accident and in relation to light and darkness. And all this is present in painting no less than sculpture. . . . But sculpture receives lightness and darkness from nature herself whereas painting receives it from Art. (Edgerton, 225)
