Next The Soft Logic of Thomas Harriot H. T. Goranson, Sirius-Beta tedg@infi.net Abstract Until recently, First Order Logic has suffered from an inadequate representation of the situation. This has imposed significant limitations in real-world modeling. We see that an early innovator in logic had this concept but it was dropped by successors because of notational complexity. We present a likely introspective notation of the early scholar, Harriot; we outline the Hermetic influence on this idea (of introspection); and provide a newly discovered interesting influence from the New World. Introduction The historical sequence of how mathematical ideas unfolded is almost never the best logical development for my own understanding. But sometimes the historic evolution itself provides significant insight into ideas. And sometimes parts of ideas are lost as they pass from one thinker to another. The Problem My own work is in logic-based modeling of collaborative enterprises . There is a long tradition of such representations in the industrial engineering community; in the past decade, such representations have been extended to all elements of the business enterprise for all sorts of valuable tasks. Enterprise integration, business process re-engineering and simulation are among the most common. The economic benefits of this application of logic are very strong, and the area is booming. Unfortunately, there are problems.

By: Albert Van Helden Summary: A brief biography of Thomas Harriot (1560-1621). Nothing is known of Harriot's life up to the time when, at age seventeen, he matriculated at the University of Oxford. The record states that he was from the county of Oxford and that his father was a commoner. Harriot studied at St. Mary's Hall, took his degree in 1580, and went to London. Here he was employed by Sir Walter Ralegh and in 1585 went with the expedition to Virginia organized by Ralegh as cartographer and one versed in the theory of navigationin our terms, as staff scientist. Harriot returned in 1586 and wrote an account of Virginia and its natives, A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia , published in 1588. In the meantime, Harriot had joined Ralegh in Ireland, which the English were colonizing at that time. Ralegh granted Harriot a former abbey, where Harriot lived for a few years. Back in London, Harriot came into contact with William Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland, and in 1598 he left Ralegh and entered the service of Northumberland, who gave him a pension and living quarters (and later a separate house) at Syon House, just west of London. In 1605 Harriot was briefly imprisoned along with Northumberland as a result of the Gunpowder Plot. Harriot was quickly released but the earl remained in the Tower of London until 1622. Harriot lived at Syon for the rest of his life. In 1613 he developed an cancerous ulcer (on his nostril), which was the eventual cause of his death.

For Harriot to write that the natives, "upon due consideration shall find our manner of knowledges and crafts to exceed theirs in perfection. . . by so much the more it is probable that they should desire our freindship and love, and have the greater respect for pleasing and obeying us. . ." and for Harriot to say this in the name of Christianity is troubling(79). It seems to me that the natives Harriot basically described as uncivilized and ignorant were doing alright with their simple houses and rudimentary tools and fighting strategies prior to his arrival. Furthermore, it's embarrasing to think that Harriot and his men left each group of natives with both disease and the misconception that the Englishmen were gods. Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Thomas Harriot was a mathematician and astronomer who founded the English school of algebra. He is described in [10] by Fauvel and Goulding as:- ... the greatest mathematician that Oxford has produced ... yet his name has only recently become widely known, and even now his achievements are not fully appreciated by most mathematicians. We know very little of Harriot's youth. In fact all that is known is that on Friday 20 December 1577 he matriculated at the University of Oxford with an entry in the official records giving his age as seventeen, his father as a plebeian, and his birthplace Oxfordshire. It is from this record that his date of birth is deduced to be 1560 and we know that his father was a "commoner" but the very fact that Harriot was entering Oxford means that it is unlikely that he came from the poorest classes. Despite extensive searches of the Oxfordshire records, no further information concerning his birth or parentage has been found (although a number of possible relatives have been identified). As an undergraduate at Oxford, Harriot was a student at St Mary's Hall. He became friends with Richard Hakluyt and Thomas Allen, both lecturers at the university, but not at St Mary's Hall. Harriot graduated in 1580 and went to London. It is not clear exactly what he did in his first few years there but, probably from late 1583, he entered Sir Walter Raleigh's service. Hakluyt, dedicating a preface to Raleigh in February 1587, wrote (see for example [4]):-

Thomas Harriot died in 1621. He had published no mathematical or astronomical works during his lifetime, but he left his papers in reasonably good order and set out his wishes in his will that they should be properly edited and published. This article tells the story of how 380 years have passed since Harriot's death yet, despite many attempts, his dying wishes have not yet been properly carried out. The story of how knowledge of Thomas Harriot's mathematical genius has come down to us is related in several of the references, see for example [1], [2], or [4]. We quote from the preface of [4]:- It is now more than years since Thomas Harriot on his deathbed considered his fame and reputation. Alas! Though recognised by his contemporaries as England's most profound mathematician, most imaginative and methodical experimental scientist, and first of all Englishmen to make a telescope and turn it on the heavens, Harriot had not prepared his works for the use of future generations. The thousands upon thousands of sheets of mathematics and of scientific observations which had occupied most of his waking hours were lost to sight, buried in private archives. Early discussions in the newly founded Royal Society of London centred around the search for Harriot's lost papers, but inquiries made from
