None of his many friends were willing to advance him the money required for his venture. In fact, many of them thought that the venture was a foolhardy one and hence doomed for failure. Some even thought of having him committed to an asylum. The only exception was Yeshwant Nadkarni, a long-standing friend who was convinced of his sincerity and honesty. However, even he needed proof that Dadasaheb could produce a story-film. Hence, it was not enough for Dadasaheb to produce a "topical" short. He had to make a short film centred around a theme if he had to prove his worth.
Phalke planted a pea in an earthenware pot and began to record its growth one frame at a time with his simple five-pound movie camera, imported from London. It took him a full 45 days to shoot the 200-foot film which ran for a bare two minutes. A show of the film was held at an electrical shop in Kalbadevi for an amazed audience which saw the pea grow into a plant within a matter of minutes. Among those in the audience was Yeshwant Nadkarni who immediately agreed to finance Phalke's venture. Variously recorded in film history as The Growth Of Pea Plant and From Peanut to Plant, this short film was the first to use time lapse techniques in India. Thus, even if by accident rather than design, Phalke had made the first Indian documentary in the true sense of the word.

'Raja Harishchandra'.
RAJA HARISHCHANDRA - THE STORY
There were other problems, the principal one being the dearth of artistes willing to work in films because of the stigma attached to the profession. Phalke took out a series of advertisements in Induprakash, a well-circulated Marathi newspaper of that time, welcoming auditions from "handsome faces". Only third-rate stage artistes applied. Finding women artistes was an even tougher job. Phalke even scoured red-light areas for suitable women artistes but did not meet with much success. Eventually he had to be satisfied with casting the slightly built Salunke as Taramati. D.D. Dabke was cast as Harishchandra while Phalke's own son Bhalchandra played Rohidas.
The actual production problems were even more complex. Shooting for Raja Harishchandra began soon after the monsoon of 1912 at the bungalow owned by Mathurdas Monji Waiji on Dadar Main Road, Phalke had to do everything: teach acting to the artistes, write the scenario, design and erect the set, direct the film and do the filming. That apart he had to work round the clock: shoot during the day and perforate the negative, develop the exposed film, print and edit it during the night. There was no alternative because no one really knew anything about making feature films.

HARISHCHANDRA This is a remarkable story about the ordeals suffered by a king and his family. This is also a touching story about one man's adherence to his ideals of truth and duty, about the demi-gods who conspired to test him, and about a very powerful sage who became the instrument of testing him. We narrate this age-old yet ever new legend from India, told through the painbrush-strokes of Bengali artists who have created and brought to life the characters depicted in the frames that follow: Frame 1. There was a very virtuous king in the Kosala region of ancient India. His name was Harishchandra. The country was very happy and prosperous during his reign. He, his queen Shaivya, and their young son, prince Rohitashwa, were loved by all their subjects. Here, King Harishchandra is shown in red, with his queen Shaivya behind him, holding the little prince Rohitashwa. Notice that the painting is framed at the top and the bottom with a vine-trellis. The same mechanism is used in subsequent frames to divide the same picture and present within it several episodes of the story at once. Frame 2.

'Andher Nagri Chaupat Raja
take ser bhaji take ser khaja'
(From Bhartendu Harishchandra's play 'Andher Nagri') Little children in the Hindi heartland still mouth these lines effortlessly without a clue as to their origin. Such is the hold and influence of Babu Harishchandra on the masses in the Hindi-speaking belt. Born in Benares on September 9, 1850 in Benaras, Bhartendu was denied a decent education as his parents passed away while he was still quite young. But it did not stop him from educating himself and becoming the father of the Hindi drama. Bhartendu is the first original Hindi playwright. When he started writing plays sometime in 1868, with 'Pravas Natak' being his first play, there was no ideal form of Hindi theatre available. Bhartendu therefore used Sanskrit and the then fast developing Bangla theatre as models for his writings. Hence the predominant influence of Sanskrit drama in the works of Bhartendu like, 'Chandravali, Satya Harishchandra, Bharat Janani', which all show the essential parts of Sanskrit drama like Nandipath, Prastavana, and Bharatvakya. The soliloquies and the lengthy poetic dialogues in his plays also reflect the Sanskrit effect. Even though Bhartendu used the Sanskrit model in his plays, he did not neglect Western theatrical norms and traditions. His plays 'Neeldevi' and 'Vidyasunder' have scene breakups, which are very Western in approach. These plays don't have Prastavana and Bharatvakya like the Sanskrit ones.

Bhartendu Harish Chandra (1850-1885) Bhartendu Harish Chandra was born on 09 September 1850 in a distinguished and opulent Agarwal family of Varanasi. From his grand- father and father he inherited material prosperity, Vaishnava traditions and literary talents. Harish Chandra showed love for devotional music and aptitude for composing poetry even at the age of five. Today Bhartendu Harish Chandra is revered as the father of modern Hindi literature. His writings marked a transition from tradition to modernity. He brought old literature into focus and created a new one, rich and varied in content, wide in range, refreshing in style, and nationalistic, progressive and reformatory in tone. Among his literary works, dramas and love lyrics are most famous. His genius as a poet lay in bringing poetry from the royal courts to the common people and introducing realism into it. He travelled widely in northern India and learnt several other languages such as Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Marwari and Punjabi, which widened his intellectual horizon. He started a chain of journals such as Harish Chandra Chandrika, Kavivachan Sudha, Balabodhini Patrika and Bhagwadbhaktitoshini.
