68. Erasing Russell's Paradox
Yet in Section 1, halmos, makes the rather profound statement, The mathematical concept halmos, paul R. Naive Set Theory. New York SpringerVerlag, 1974.
http://www.geocities.com/dblowe_47/sets.htm
Erasing Russell's Paradox Home Cantor's Theorem Numbers
The concept of set is so "naïve" and intuitive because it is directly related to the fundamental trait of human cognitive functioning to group and count in order to make sense of the constant bombardment of sensory stimuli. We group these stimuli based on common properties, and their distinctness allows us to count and relate how many items with common properties we encountered. What mathematicians have done is given this grouping concept "life" and the name of "set" and shifted focus away from the items with common properties that make up this mental grouping. Mathematicians have abstracted the concept and gone off to play with it without stopping to consider, at the most basic level, what it should and should not be.
The first order of business is to establish what "exists" and what does not. Based on the general human cognitive ability to distinguish between and group "objects of thought", we can safely say that such objects of thought "exist". We generally agree upon the existence of objects since we can discuss the properties of objects among ourselves and conclude that we are discussing the same objects. And we can assume reasonably that there are many distinct objects. We can also reasonably assume that there are objects with common properties because the world would otherwise be in complete chaos. (Some might argue that the world is just that!) Philosophical questions aside, our first Axiom (1) is:
There exist distinct objects that can be grouped according to a shared property (or properties).

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. In a few months, Paul Halmos will be 88. Sixty-six years ago he received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois under the direction of Joe Doob. His contributions to mathematics over those 66 years have been substantial. He is an exemplary writer, teacher, editor, and research mathematician. He has the awards to prove it, too: the Chauvenet Prize, the Lester R. Ford Award (twice), the Polya Award, the Steele Prize, the Haimo Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching, and the MAA's highest award, the Gung-Hu Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics. He was born in Hungary, and came to the United States when he was 13. Five years later he earned his B.S. in mathematics from the University of Illinois. Upon completing his doctorate in 1938, he spent two years at the Institute for Advanced Study as an assistant to Johnny von Neumann. While there he began writing Finite-Dimensional Vector Spaces, the first of his 17 books. It was published in 1942 and is still in print 62 years later! The fact that most of his books are still in print is further testimony to the quality and staying power of his writing. He also has written 122 papers and served as editor of The American Mathematical Monthly.

Paul Richard Halmos (born March 3 ) is a Hungarian -born American mathematician who has done research in the fields of probability theory statistics operator theory ergodic theory , and functional analysis (in particular Hilbert spaces He is noted for a number of expository books, viewed by many to be well written, including Naive Set Theory Introduction to Hilbert Space and the Theory of Spectral Multiplicity Lectures on Boolean Algebras , and Finite-Dimensional Vector Spaces . His autobiography , published in , is titled I Want to Be a Mathematician The use of " iff " to abbreviate "if and only if" is sometimes mistakenly credited to Halmos; however, he has said that he borrowed this notation. Course Tutor
What's in this "Course"?
Course Description
The goal of this n lecture course (for some as yet unspecified n greater than, or equal to, 5, but no larger than 10) is to introduce the students to the life-cycle of a scientific article, which special emphasis on the current practices in the field of Computer Science. In particular, we shall focus on the following three key questions that every novice in a scientific discipline asks oneself:
  • How does one write a scientific article?
  • How does one hold a scientific presentation?
  • How does one evaluate a scientific article?
We shall devote each of the first three lectures in the course to analyze one of these questions. The last two sessions will take place later in the semester, and will be devoted to cross reviews of your own articles (based, of course, on the criteria for evaluation that will be mentioned in the course). There may be some seminar style meetings in between where we may focus on heatedly discussing some ethical and social issues which are part and parcel of scientific life. Quoting Carl Djerassi "Scientists operate within a very tribal culture whose rules, mores and idiosyncrasies are generally not taught through specific lectures or books, but rather are acquired through a form of intellectual osmosis in a mentor-disciple relationship. The soul and baggage of contemporary science is made up of items such as publications, priorities, the order of the authors, the choice of the journal, the collegiality and the brutal competition, the striving for academic tenure, grantsmanship, the glass ceiling for women in a male-dominated enterprise
