Halley, Edmond
Anglický astronom, vybudoval první observatoø na jižní polokouli (ostrov Sv. Heleny).

Edmond Halley; Phil. Trans. XXIX, 390 (1716)
I. An Account of several Nebulae or lucid Spots like Clouds, lately discovered among the Fixt Stars by help of the Telescope.
In our last [contribution] we gave short Account of the several New-Stars that have appeared in the Heavens, within the last 150 Years, some of which afford very surprising Phaenomena. But not less wonderful are certain luminous Spots or Patches, which discover themselves only by the Telescope, and appear to the naked Eye like small Fixt Stars; but in reality are nothing else but Light coming from an extraordinary great Space in the Ether; through which a lucid Medium is diffused, that shines with its own proper Lustre . This seems fully to reconsile that Difficulty which some have moved against the Description Moses gives of the Creation, alledging that Light could not be created without the Sun. But in the following Instances the contrary is manifest; some of these bright Spots discover no sign of a Star in the middle of them; and the irregular Form of those that have, shews them not to proceed from the Illumination of a Central Body. These are, as the aforesaid New Stars, Six in Number, all which we will describe in the order of time, as they were discovered; giving their Places in the Sphere of Fixt Stars, to enable the Curious, who are furnished with good Telescopes, to take the Satisfaction of contemplating them. The first and most considerable is that in the Middle of Orion 's Sword, marked with Theta by

Sir Edmond Halley
Sir Edmond Halley (1656 - 1742) was an English astronomer who is best known for his study of comets , and the discovery that certain comets observed many years apart appeared to travel along similar orbits . In particular, he noticed that the comets of 1531, 1607, and 1682 seemed similar and he hypothesized that they were in fact the same comet. He predicted that the comet would return in 1758; when it was observed as predicted, the comet was named Halley's Comet in his honor. Show me a printable version of this page.

Comets visible from the earth can be seen for periods ranging from a few days to several months. They were long regarded with awe and even terror and were often taken as omens of unfavorable events.

Gaia Hypothesis (n.) Gates, William L. American climatologist. A pioneer in climate modelling. Gauss, Karl Friedrich Disquisitiones Arithmeticae , was published in 1801. He invented mathematical statistics (i.e. Gaussian distribution and Gaussian error calculation) as well as making contributions to the science of geomagnetism and planetary motions. Much of his work remained unpublished during his lifetime and was later rediscovered in the later 19 th century. General circulation of the atmosphere (n.) The science of meteorology may well be said to have begun when George Hadley, in 1735, attempted to explain from physical principles why the trade winds exist. The trades are the easterly winds north and south of the equatorial doldrum belt. The trades got their name from English sailors, for their steadiness (as in "the wind blows trade," i.e. on track). Doldrums refers to the becalmed ships with flapping sails (as in the term "in the doldrums"). Hadley pointed out that equatorial solar heating would make tropical air lighter than air at high latitudes. Tropical air would thus rise, high latitude air would sink, winds at the surface would blow towards the equator, and winds aloft would blow towards the poles. Hadley realized that the rotation of the earth would cause the surface wind blowing toward the equator to veer towards the west, thus producing the system of trades familiar to the mariners of his day. This picture is quite realistic as concerns the trades and the doldrums. It had to be modified considerably, however, to account for the other global wind belts, notably the westerlies. The physicist Carl-Gustaf Rossby did this in the 1930's and 1940's, thus founding modern meteorology. Not one, but several circulation cells are involved, with air rising not only at the tropics, but also at the
