EDMOND HALLEY'S FAMOUS ADMONITION of 1716 PHILOSOPHICAL TRANSACTIONS VOL. XXIX (1716) A new Method of determining the Parallax of the Sun, or his Distance from the Earth; by Dr. Halley, Sec. R. S. N0 348, p.454. Translated from the Latin. which is the same thing, the sun's horizontal parallax, to be 12 seconds and a half, the moon will be less than Mercury, and the earth larger than Venus, and the sun's distance from the earth come out nearly 16500 semi-diameters of the earth. I shall admit of this distance at present, till its precise quantity be made to appear more certain by the trial I propose; not regarding the authority of such as set the sun at an immensely greater distance, relying on the observa-tions of a vibrating pendulum, which do not seem accurate enough to deter-mine such minute angles; at least, such as use this method will find the parallax sometimes none at all, and sometimes even negative; that is, the distance will become either infinite, or more than infinite, which is absurd. And it is scarcely possible for any one certainly to determine, by means of in-struments, however nice, single seconds, or even 10 seconds; and therefore, it is not at all surprising, that the exceeding minuteness of such angles has hitherto baffled the many and ingenious attempts of artists. But by the limited laws of motion, Venus is very rarely seen within the sun's disk; and for a series of 120 years, and upwards, is not to be seen there once; viz. from 1639, when Mr. Horrox was favoured with this agreeable sight, and he the first and only one since the creation of the world, down to 1761; at which time, according to the theories hitherto observed in the heavens, Venus will pass over the sun on May 26 in the morning; so that (vide Phil. Trans. N0 193) at London, nearly at 6 o'clock in the morning, she is to be in the middle of the sun's disk, and but 4 minutes more southerly than his centre. The duration of this transit will be almost 8 hours; viz. from 2 till near

Also Edmond Halley, he was as a prosperous salter and soapmaker. The astronomer's mother died in 1672; his father was murdered in 1684.
It is clear that the father was wealthy. Aside from the business, he had accumulated properties in London that brought in rents of about £1000 per annum.

Ll.D, 1704; D.C.L., 1710, both from Oxford (not to be counted as advanced degrees).
5. Religion
Affiliation: Anglican, Heterodox
All of the smoke about his heterodox views must have come from some fire, though there is cause to suspect that the extent of his free-thinking has been exaggerated. However, it does seem clear that Halley questioned (or better rejected) the universal authority of Scripturefor example, in his famous paper on the cause of the deluge and in his calculation of the age of the earth from the salinity of the sea, which yielded an age well beyond the accepted Scriptural chronology.

It also illustrates a secret of successful scientists, which is skill in finding the frontier, the edge of current knowledge. In his case it was finding a part of the sky that no astronomer had studied yet. But Halley was lucky, too, in that St. Helena, the nearest English possession in the southern hemisphere, had come under English rule only two years before. He made a point of getting there first. Another distinctive thing he did was to reinterpret old data. In the case of

EDMOND HALLEY Astronomer Halley was the first man to recognize the recurring astronomical visitor now known as Halley's Comet. Halley was already interested in the stars when he entered Queen's College, Oxford at the age of 16. He later left Oxford without a degree and became a protege of the Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed. Halley and Flamsteed had a falling out, but by age 22 Halley had already been elected to the prestigious Royal Society. In 1705 he published Synopsis on Cometary Astronomy , in which he argued that prominent comets observed in 1531, 1607 and 1682 had all been the same comet, returning to pass Earth on a cycle of about 76 years. He was proven correct when the comet returned on Christmas Day of 1758 (though Halley himself had died in 1742), and the comet has since been known as Halley's Comet. Halley became a professor at Oxford in 1704 and succeeded Flamsteed as Astronomer Royal in 1720. Multitalented and exceedingly brainy, Halley also contributed to other scientific fields during his long career; he is especially known for inventing the diving bell.
Extra credit : In scientific circles, Halley's Comet is more properly known as Comet Halley... Halley was a friend and staunch supporter of

Edmond Halley In most people’s minds Edmond Halley is remembered for one thing. No, he was not a rock star of the 1950’s, but he did have something in common with that rock star. Like the rock star, Edmond Halley is associated with a comet - Halley’s Comet - but Edmond Halley was more. Edmond Halley was an able scientist/mathematician and began his career as a major astronomer by having a paper published on theoretical astronomy as a college student. This happened only twenty years after his birth on October 29, 1656 in Hagerston (near London) in England. All during Edmond’s early life he was interested in science, especially astronomy. He said, “from my tenderest youth I gave myself over to the consideration of Astronomy.” He was intrigued with science which gave Halley “so great a pleasure as is impossible to explain to anyone who has not experienced it” Besides being known as a highly intelligent youth Edmond was named captain of his school, St. Paul, at age 15. He grew up as simply a normal boy with a sense of humor and a great charm of manner. Edmond continued his education at Queen’s College, Oxford at the age of 17. He was “particularly taken notice of for the extraordinary advances he made at the same time in the Mathematics.”
