Comet Halley
In 1705 Edmond Halley predicted, using Newton's newly formulated laws of motion, that the comet seen in 1531, 1607, and 1682 would return in 1758 (which was, alas, after his death). The comet did indeed return as predicted and was later named in his honor. The average period of Halley's orbit is 76 years but you cannot calculate the dates of its reappearances by simply subtracting multiples of 76 years from 1986. The gravitational pull of the major planets alters the orbital period from revolution to revolution. Nongravitational effects (such as the reaction from gasses boiled off during its passage near the Sun) also play an important, but smaller, role in altering the orbit. Between the years 239 BC and 1986 AD the orbital period has varied from 76.0 years (in 1986) to 79.3 years (in 451 and 1066). The closest perihelion passage to the time of Jesus are 11 BC and 66 AD; neither event took place in Jesus' lifetime. Its most famous appearance was in 1066 when it was seen at the Battle of Hastings, an event commemorated in the Bayeux Tapestry Comet Halley was visible in 1910 and again in 1986. Its next perihelion passage will be in early 2062.

Edmond Halley (October 29, 1656 - January 14, 1742)
Edmond Halley was born in Hagerston, Middlesex, England (near London) as son of a wealthy merchant, salter and soapmaker. His birth date is somewhat uncertain because it is not known if at that time in his village the Gregorian or the Julian calendar was in use. There's also some dispute over the year. He got educated at Oxford and studied at Oxford University, Queen's College, 1673-6. He worked with John Flamsteed , the Astronomer Royal in 1675-6 both at Oxford and Greenwich, and observed e.g. the occultation of Mars by the Moon on August 21, 1676. In November 1676, he gave up his studies without final exam, and sailed to St. Helena on the southern hemisphere, in order to compile a catalog of southern stars. The reasons for this are unknown, but it may be that he wanted to complement Flamsteed's mapping of the northern celestial hemisphere on the southern skies. Anyway, he compiled this catalog, the first of the southern skies which he published on his return to England in 1678, and observed the Mercury transit on November 7, 1677. On his return, Halley was elected to the Royal Society on November 30, 1678, and King Charles II graduated him by mandate in 1679. That year, he was sent to Danzig to visit

Edmond Halley of Halley's Comet fame became Astronomer Royal in 1719. An admirer of Newton he was instrumental in getting the Principia into print. These posthumously published tables are important for the manner in which they employed Newton's rules for calculating the position of the moon and Flamsteed's planetary observations. The planetary tables continued to be in use until the 1790s.
This particular table shows conjuctions between the moon with the sun for the period in question.

    Edmond Halley's Greatest Discoveries
    Explanation:
Sir Edmond Halley was quite a discoverer. Born in 1656, he computed in 1705 that a bright comet was periodic and would make another appearance in 1758. The comet appeared as predicted and is now known as Comet Halley . Unfortunately, Halley died in 1742 and never saw his prediction come true. In 1716 Halley proposed two types of diving bells that would enable people to explore the deep sea. Halley pioneered our understanding of trade winds, tides, cartography, naval navigation, mortality tables, and stellar proper motions. Halley (incorrectly) proposed that the Earth was made of concentric spheres the size of the inner planets each of which might contain life. Perhaps Halley's greatest discovery, however, was that his contemporary Isaac Newton had discovered a powerful mathematical formulation of gravity.

    Edmond Halley
    Portrait of Edmond Halley
Reprinted by permission from the Royal Society Library, London, England. Edmond Halley was an English astronomer who lived between 1656-1742. Using historical records, his own observations, and Newton's universal law of gravitation, he reasoned that the comets which had appeared in 1456, 1531, 1607, and 1682, were one and the same. He then predicted the comet's return about every 76 years. Although Halley died in 1742, the comet reappeared 16 years later, and today bears his name. In addition to his work on comets , Halley studied the Earth's weather and magnetic field, and the ocean's tides.
