Halley was appointed Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford in 1704, and in 1720 he succeeded John Flamsteed as astronomer royal. At the Greenwich Observatory he used the first transit instrument and devised a method for determining longitude at sea by means of lunar observations. Halley played an active role in the events and controversies of his time. He both morally and financially supported Isaac Newton, pacified the astronomer Johannes Hevelius regarding the disputed accuracy of methods for measuring stellar positions, and infuriated Flamsteed by scheming with Newton to publish Flamsteed's observations long before they were complete.

Edmond Halley (1656-1742) Edmond Halley was born on October 29, 1656 in the village of Haggerston, England, which today, has been engulfed by the City of London. Edmond's father, Edmond Sr., was by some accounts a soapboiler and a salter. Whatever his true profession was, though, he was a rich man, and eventually possessed land from which he extracted rent which allowed his family to live a relatively prosperous lifestyle. Halley attended the prestigious St. Paul's school, where in 1671, he was appointed captain; a position resembling today's student body president. He was an excellent student, and in 1673, attended Queen's College, Oxford. At this young age, Halley already possessed, "... the basic facts and computations not only of navigation but also those which the practical astronomer is concerned when he sets about the delicate task of measuring the positions of celestial bodies in the sky."(Ronan, pg. 6)

Halley was the first man to recognize the recurring astronomical visitor now known as Halley's Comet. Halley was already interested in the stars when he entered Queen's College, Oxford at the age of 16. He later left Oxford without a degree and became a protege of the Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed. Halley and Flamsteed had a falling out, but by age 22 Halley had already been elected to the prestigious Royal Society. In 1705 he published Synopsis on Cometary Astronomy , in which he argued that prominent comets observed in 1531, 1607 and 1682 had all been the same comet, returning to pass Earth on a cycle of about 76 years. He was proven correct when the comet returned on Christmas Day of 1758 (though Halley himself had died in 1742), and the comet has since been known as Halley's Comet. Halley became a professor at Oxford in 1704 and succeeded Flamsteed as Astronomer Royal in 1720. Multitalented and exceedingly brainy, Halley also contributed to other scientific fields during his long career; he is especially known for inventing the diving bell. In scientific circles, Halley's Comet is more properly known as Comet Halley... Halley was a friend and staunch supporter of

Halley was intrigued by the theories of the British physicist Sir Isaac Newton and encouraged him to write the Principia, which Halley then published in 1687 at his own expense. He was made Astronomer Royal in 1721 and began an 18-year study of the complete revolution of the moon through its ascending and descending nodes. Halley's most important scientific treatise was Astronomiae Cometicae Synopsis (Synopsis on Cometary Astronomy), begun in 1682 and published in 1705. In this work, Halley applied Newton's laws of motion (

"That if a star were displaced in the globe he would presently find it out." The weather in St Helena made astronomical observations difficult at best and had much to be desired. Despite this Halley's eighteen month stay on the island resulted in his cataloguing of 341 southern hemisphere stars as well as the discovery of a star cluster in Centaurus. During the voyage Halley improved the sextant, an instrument used for navigation, he collected data relative to the ocean and atmosphere, he noted the equatorial retardation of the pendulum, and made on St Helena, on November 7, 1677, the first complete observation of a transit of Mercury. He proposed using transits of Mercury or Venus to better determine the distance of the Sun and therefore the scale of the solar system using Kepler
's third law of planetary motion.

Astronomer Royal: 1720 - 1742
Edmond Halley, b. Nov. 8 (Oct. 29, O.S.), 1656, d. Jan. 14, 1742, was an English astronomer who discovered the proper motion of stars and the periodicity of comets. His activities also ranged from studying archaeology to serving as deputy comptroller of the mint at Chester. He was an integral part of the English scientific community at the height of its creativity. A graduate of Oxford, he became a member of the Royal Society at the age of 22. From the island of Saint Helena, he catalogued (1676-78) the positions of about 350 Southern Hemisphere stars and observed a transit of Mercury; he urged that the latter phenomenon and future transits of Venus be used to determine the distance of the Sun. He worked out a theory of cometary orbits, concluded that the comet of 1682 (which still bears his name) was periodic, and correctly predicted that it would return in 76 years. In 1710, comparing current star positions with those listed in Ptolemy's catalog, he deduced that the stars must have a slight motion of their own, and he detected this proper motion in three stars. Halley was appointed Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford in 1704, and in 1720 he succeeded

English astronomer and mathematician, Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford, strong supporter of Isaac Newton, member of the Royal Society, first to detect the proper motion of stars, discovered the 76-year cycle of the comet that bears his name. Edmond Halley was born on October 29, 1656 in the village of Haggerston, England. Today, this village is part of London. Halley was the son of a prosperous land owner. He eventually attended the St. Paul's school where he was appointed captain in 1671. It is a position similar to today's student body president. Halley did very well in school and attended the Queen's college in Oxford in 1673. He became a member of the Royal Society at the age of 22. Halley was appointed Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford in 1704. In 1720 he succeeded John Flamsteed as astronomer royal. Halley was an extremely talented scientist in many disciplines. He supported Isaac Newton both morally and financially, and was partly responsible for persuading him to publish his works. From the island of Saint Helena, Halley catalogued the positions of around 350 Southern Hemisphere stars and observed a transit of Mercury. He believed that this phenomenon and future transits of Venus be used to determine the distance of the Sun. Halley also used the the first transit instrument at the Greenwich Observatory and devised a method for determining longitude at sea by means of lunar observations. In 1710, comparing current star positions with those listed in Ptolemy's catalog, he deduced that the stars must have a slight motion of their own, and he detected this proper motion in three stars.
