23. Philip Larkin 1922-1985 By Donald Hall

Philip Larkin 1922-1985
by Donald Hall U Times Literary Supplement almost a decade ago. It begins: I work all day, and get half drunk at night.
Waking at four to soundless dark, I stare.
In time the curtain-edges will grow light.
Unresting death, a whole day nearer now,
Making all thought impossible but how
And where and when I shall myself die.
The Less Deceived announced Philip Larkin in 1955. As a young man he had published The North Ship , poems lyrical and Yeatsian and not yet Larkinesque. The early work resembled other young Englishmen: neo-Romantic, even a bit wet Lucky Jim The Less Deceived was a small-press book—published by George Hartley who ran the Marvell Press and edited Listen , the best literary magazine in its time—it was published with a list of subscribers which included almost all English poets under forty: Amis, Bergonzi, Boyars, Brownjohn, Conquest, Davie, Enright, Hamburger, Hill, Jennings, MacBeth, Murphy, Thwaite, Tomlinson, Wain. (Thom Gunn was in California; Ted Hughes was not yet Ted Hughes.) And there were dons: Bateson, Dobree, Dodsworth, Fraser, Kermode, Leishmann. It was not long before Larkin became a popular poet in England, second only to Betjeman in public affection. When a good poet becomes popular there is always some silly reason as well as recognition of excellence. Dylan Thomas became a bestseller in this country—surely the obscurest poet ever to sell ten thousand copies—because tales of drunkenness and irreverence sold copies. With Robert Frost, the carefully cultivated rural manner—gussied up by the Luce publications until he resembled Scattergood Baines—sold copies and had little to do with the real man.

Philip Hall 's father was George Hall and his mother was Mary Laura Sayers. They were not married and George left without making any provision for Laura or their newly born son Philip. Laura called herself Mrs Hall and she brought Philip up in her parents home in Hampstead, London, until he was seven years old. At the time Philip was born Laura was employed as dressmaker as was her twin sister Lois, and also her two elder sisters, who were also twins, Ada and Ethel. In 1909, while living in his grandfather Joseph Sayers' house, Philip entered New End Primary School. In 1910 Laura, along with her three sisters, bought a house in Well Walk which they ran as a boarding house. Philip attended Sunday School and was baptised in 1911. He excelled at his Primary School and in 1915 he won a scholarship to Christ's Hospital West Horsham. This was a boarding school for children of ability whose parents were not able to afford the normal boarding school fees. Hall entered Christ's Hospital in May 1915 at age eleven. Although these were the years of World War I, Hall was too young to be affected by the war, other than serving in the Officer's Training Corps. It was at Christ's Hospital that Hall came to love mathematics. He was fortunate to have teachers who were both accomplished mathematicians and also able to transmit their enjoyment of the subject. It was not only mathematics in which he excelled, winning the Gold Medal in his final year, but also in English winning a medal for the best English essay. Hall was House Captain in 1921-22, his final year at Christ's Hospital, and his popularity says much about his character [4]:-

Now the mice play shyly round me

In that Little Ole Sod Shanty in the West Oh, the hinges are of leather,

Hall, Philip
English mathematician who specialized in the study of group theory.
Hall was born in London and studied at Cambridge, where he spent his whole career. He was professor of pure mathematics 1953-67.
In 1928 Hall began a study of prime power groups. From this work he developed his 1933 theory of regular groups. An investigation of the conditions under which finite groups are soluble led him in 1937 to postulate a general structure theory for finite soluble groups. In 1954, he published an examination of finitely generated soluble groups in which he demonstrated that they could be divided into two classes of unequal size. At the end of the 1950s Hall turned to the subject of simple groups, and later also examined non-strictly-simple groups.
