Author(s): Jack Hadley Peter Cunningham
We used instrumental variable analysis to account for the endogeneity of safety net provider location in estimating multivariate regression models of the relationship between safety net location and access to care of uninsured persons. Data were from the 1998–99 Community Tracking Household Survey. We found that closer proximity to safety net providers increases access to care for the uninsured. Failure to account for endogeneity bias leads to a finding of no effect of the safety net on access. However, improvements in access associated with greater safety net availability still leave a substantial gap in access between the uninsured and the insured. By putting up this simple web page, I've managed to catch the attention of several people who have written nice notes, and often included useful information. I've included some of them here. It's getting somewhat long, so I've rearranged them to show the newest first . There are about twenty-five emails here, and many have attachments and links. Many emails include unanswered questions. If you have any answers to questions posed here, please write to the person asking, and I'd appreciate it if you'd CC a copy to me, at art@hawaii.com, so I can add the info to this page. It's pretty obvious from the material here, that the real present day Hadley historians are John Hadley Jim Hadley Terry McLean , and Tom Nash . Thanks especially to you four for your contributions. Maybe we'll meet some day. And thanks to all who've written.

ANGEL OF HADLEY FACT OR MYTH?
Whalley and Goffe in Massachusetts make their home.
Then to Quinnipiac in haste pursue their way,
Nor know they where to rest, nor where to roam,
Until in Hadley concealed and lonely they stay.

from: The Story of Connecticut , Lewis Sprague Mills, 1932. For inquiries contact Libby Klekowski
Who were Whalley and Goffe? Why did they need to be lonely and concealed in Hadley? Let's begin the story September 1, 1675.
There were rumors of war up and down the Connecticut River. King Philip and his warriors were attacking the colonial outposts of Deerfield and Northfield. The inhabitants of Hadley (approximately 50 families) were observing a Fast Day service when the attack came. The villagers were unprepared. Even though they rushed out of the Meeting House, guns ready to fire, they were totally unorganized and ineffectual. Suddenly there appeared among them an elderly man, a man whom no one recognized. Who was he? Where did he come from? This stranger took command, arrayed the townspeople in a military manner, and helped them repel the warriors. As suddenly as he had appeared, he disappeared. The villagers could not explain what had happened so proclaimed their savior an angel sent by God.
What the good people of Hadley did not know was that their minister, John Russell, had been secretly housing two men, General Edward Whalley and General William Goffe, for eleven years - since 1664. These two men were on-the-run, dodging the King of England's agents, hiding out in the wilds of the recently settled colonies of New England.

John Hadley's Reflector
John Hadley's Reflector.
The First Modern Newtonian.
Isaac Newton's design for a reflecting telescope made possible a whole new breed of powerful instruments with exciting possibilities. But the reflector was not yet a practicality, because Newton's mirror was spherical, and not very well polished. Only 16% of the light was transmitted, and only low powers could be used.
John Hadley solved several of the design's most serious problems when he produced, with the help of his two brothers, a 6" f/10 Newtonian with a novel yet steady mounting. The instrument was first demonstrated to the Royal Society in 1721. The Society was so impressed that they gave it to Edmund Halley (for detailed examination, of course) and commissioned another from Hadley.
When Halley turned in his report he said that the little telescope was in every way the equal of Christian Huygens' 123-foot aerial refractor (this was before the days of achromats). Halley reported that he was able to use powers as high as 200X, and that he had observed the shadows of two satellites on Jupiter's disk. He experienced no difficulty in detecting Cassini's division in Saturn's ring. He later saw the shadow of one of Saturn's satellites on the disk, a very difficult observation, even today.
But the most important aspect of Hadley's accomplishment is that he published his methods of polishing and parabolization, and instructed others in them. The reflector was launched on its journey from toy to mountaintop glass giants.
