The Hills By Patrick Hadley A Study of the Music by John France The Hills is definitely one of Patrick Hadley's two masterpieces; the other being the Symphonic 'The Trees So High.' In many ways 'The Hills' is a difficult piece to formally define. On the one hand it could be seen as a cantata or even an oratorio. Yet again it would be possible to view it as a tone poem. However, perhaps the best description would be a ‘choral symphony.’ The construction of the work lends itself to unity and completeness of design. There are effectively four movements - the first having a slow introduction. It is with considerable accuracy that this work has been compared to Ralph Vaughan Williams' Sea Symphony -certainly on a general scale if not in detail.

Dr. John was born August 1788 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the only child of John Hadley and Margaret Livingston. Before moving to the Jones Bend area, John Hadley graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1807 and from the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 1812. He served as a surgeon during the War of 1812. John Livingston Hadley's grandfather, Thomas Hadley was killed by Tories during the Revolutionary War. Thomas moved to Virginia from London Grove MM, Chester, Pennsylvania shortly after his marriage to Mary Thompson in June of 1750. He did not remain in Virginia long. In 1760, he with a partner, John Wilcox, were the first merchants of Cross Creek in Cumberland Co., North Carolina. He represented his district at the Constitutional Convention at Halifax, NC. in November 1776, which enacted a Bill of Rights for the new government. He was elected sheriff of Cumberland Co, NC in 1778, and re-elected in 1781, but was killed before he could serve his last term. Despite being Quakers, Thomas, his sons Joshua and Simon were very active in the American Revolution. All were Captains of Militia. Unlike his father and brothers, John Hadley took no active part in the American Revolution. As a result he became known to the Scotch Tories of North Carolina as "Gentleman John". He was, however, Constable of Cumberland County which rendered him ineligible for military service. John died August, 1817 in Cumberland Co., NC

HADLEY, JOHN H.
John Hadley (1682-1744) was an English mathematician and inventor who built the first reflecting telescope and invented an improved quadrant in 1731 (known as Hadley's quadrant). Hadley Rille, a long valley on the surface of the moon , was named for Hadley. HARGREAVES, JAMES James Hargreaves (1720? - April 22, 1778) was an English weaver and spinner (he spun wool thread using a spinning wheel). He invented the spinning jenny, a hand-powered multiple spinning machine. The spinning jenny was much more efficient than the spinning wheel. With a spinning wheel, a person could produce only one yarn thread at a time. With Hargreaves' spinning jenny, a person could produce up to eight threads at once (it used one spinning wheel and 8 spindles on which threads were wound). The thread that the spinning jenny produced was coarse, and was only suited for filling material, but it was still quite a useful invention, and led the way to even better spinning devices. Hargreaves is said to have gotten the idea for his remarkable invention after his young daughter (named Jenny) overturned his spinning wheel. When it was upturned, it continued to spin, and Hargreaves realized that many spinning wheels could be positioned like this, creating a multiple-wheeled spinning machine.

H is an asteroid's absolute magnitude, the visual magnitude the asteroid would have if it were located 1 AU from Earth. HADLEY, JOHN H. John Hadley (1682-1744) was an English mathematician and inventor who built the first reflecting telescope and invented an improved quadrant (known as Hadley's quadrant). HADLEY RILLE Hadley Rille is a long valley on the surface of the moon . This rille is 75 miles (125 km) long, 1300 feet (400 m) deep, and almost 1 mile (1500 m) wide at its widest point. It was formed by molten basaltic lava that carved out a steep channel along the base of the Apennine Front (which was explored by the Apollo 15 astronauts in 1971). HALE-BOPP COMET Hale Bopp (designated C/1995 O1) is a periodic comet (made of frozen gas and dust), that orbits around the sun. Its earliest-recorded sighting was on July 23, 1995. It was independently discovered by Alan Hale (of New Mexico) and Thomas Bopp (of Arizona), both amateur astronomers. This comet has a diameter of about 40 km; it's rotation rate is 11.4 hours. It was last seen in 1997 and will be seen next in the year 4377; its period is 2380 years.
