Table of Contents The Psychology of Invention in the Mathematical Field , remains an important tool for exploring the increasingly complex problem of mental life. The roots of creativity for Hadamard lie not in consciousness, but in the long unconscious work of incubation, and in the unconscious aesthetic selection of ideas that thereby pass into consciousness. His discussion of this process comprises a wide range of topics, including the use of mental images or symbols, visualized or auditory words, "meaningless" words, logic, and intuition. Among the important documents collected is a letter from Albert Einstein analyzing his own mechanism of thought. Table of Contents Series: Subject Areas:

Jacques Hadamard, A Universal Mathematician
Vladimir Maz'ya Tatyana Shaposhnikova
"This book presents a fascinating story of the long life and great accomplishments of Jacques Hadamard (1865-1963), who was once called "the living legend of mathematics". As one of the last universal mathematicians, Hadamard's contributions to mathematics are landmarks in various fields. His life is linked with world history of the 20th century in a dramatic way. This work provides an inspiring view of the development of various branches of mathematics during the 19th and 20th centuries. Part I of the book portrays Hadamard's family, childhood and student years, scientific triumphs, and his personal life and trials during the first two world wars. The story is told of his involvement in the Dreyfus affair and his subsequent fight for justice and human rights. Also recounted are Hadamard's worldwide travels, his famous seminar, his passion for botany, his home orchestra, where he played the violin with Einstein, and his interest in the psychology of mathematical creativity. Hadamard's life is described in a readable and inviting way. The authors humorously weave throughout his jokes and the myths about him. They also movingly recount the tragic side of his life. Stories about his relatives and friends, and old letters and documents create an authentic and colorful picture. The book contains over 300 photographs and illustrations.

A longer and more nuanced formulation appears (in English) in Hadamard's An Essay on the Psychology of Invention in the Mathematical Field (Princeton U. Press, 1945; Dover, 1954; Princeton U. Press, as The Mathematician's Mind , 1996), page 123: "It has been written that the shortest and best way between two truths of the real domain often passes through the imaginary one." Note the use of "way" rather than "path", "of" rather than "in", "imaginary" rather than "complex", the added characterization "and best", the qualification "often", and the mysterious introduction "It has been written...". This work of Jacques Hadamard's was translated into French by his daughter Jacqueline Hadamard, revised and augmented by the author, and published as

Vague Imagery in Mathematics - Hadamard
Yesterday's post about Imagery and Math made use think about Jacques Hadamard's inquiry into mathematical creativity. His description was quite similar to Daniel Tammet's account. In Hadamard's interviews with other world class mathematicians, he found that "Practically all of them...avoided the use of mental words ...as I do, (as well as) the mental use of algebraic or any other precise signs... The mental pictures...(used) are most frequently visual, but they may also be of another kind, for instance, kinetic. There can also be auditive ones, but even these quite generally keep their vague character."
Not surprisingly periods of drowsiness or dreaming can also be a powerful source of new ideas and insights for many inventors, scientists, or mathematicians. It may be when the concepts are vague and floating, and associations can float more freely. posted by Drs. Fernette and Brock Eide at

Hadamard matrices and their designs: a coding-theoretic approach
by E. F. Assmus, Jr. and J. D. Key
Abstract Given an m by m Hadamard matrix one can extract m **2 symmetric designs on m - 1 points each of which extends uniquely to a 3-design. When m is a square certain Hadamard matrices further yield a symmetric design on m points. We study these designs and hence Hadamard matrices with the tools of algebraic coding theory using the customary association of linear codes with designs. This leads naturally to the notion, defined for any prime p , of p -equivalence for Hadamard matrices. The standard equivalence of Hadamard matrices is a refinement and, for example, the sixty 24 by 24 matrices fall into only six 2-equivalence classes. Although 2-equivalence is the same as the standard equivalence in the 16 by 16 case, our results illuminate this case also, explaining why only the Sylvester matrix can be obtained from a difference set in an elementary abelian 2-group, why two of the matrices cannot be obtained from a symmetric design on 16 points, and how the various designs may be viewed through the lens of the four-dimensional affine space over the two-element field. Introduction Historical Background and Motivation The centennial of the debut of Hadamard matrices on the mathematical stage is hard upon us. They were introduced by Jacques Hadamard in 1893. And yet, despite much attention by numerous mathematicians, the central question of existence has not been answered: we do not know whether or not, for every integer

Theorem 2.1 Hilbert's program failed to provide a secure foundation for mathematics because the axiomatic method is not an adequate account of mathematical truth. The upshot of Godel's incompleteness theorem is that there will always be true theorems in mathematics that are undecidable in the system because they cannot be proven from its axioms. When a theorem is undecidable within a formalization, it cannot be proven true or false, so mathematicians must decide whether to add the theorem or its negation as an axiom. Hilbert's formalism fails to provide an adequate philosophy of mathematics, for it ignores how mathematicians actually write and do mathematics. Mathematicians do not follow the axiomatic method when publishing proofs of theorems. Proofs are written with a mixture of natural and formal language. According to Hilbert's formalism [t]he authenticity of a mathematical proof is established by verifying that a sequence of atomic symbol strings is legitimate. In point of fact, proofs are not written in terms of atomic symbol strings. They are written in a mixture of common discourse and mathematical symbols. Definitions are made to serve as abbreviations for longer combinations of words and symbols [...]

    June 2000
    ICMI Executive Committees 1908-1998
During the fourth International Congress of Mathematicians, held in Rome in 1908, the following resolution was adopted:
"The Congress, recognizing the importance of a comparative study on the methods and plans of teaching mathematics at secondary schools, charges Professors F. Klein, G. Greenhill, and Henri Fehr to constitute an International Commission to study these questions and to present a report to the next Congress."

This resolution was submitted on the initiative of David Eugene Smith, who had suggested the idea of such an international commission three years earlier in the journal L'Enseignement Mathématique, in response to an article by Fehr. It marks the inception of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction - although the Commission was known in its earlier years as the "International Commission on the Teaching of Mathematics".
Over the years various Executives Committees of the Commission (first known as "Central Committees") have succeeded one another. The list of their officers and members appears below. This information has been gathered from the following sources:
    • Georges de Rham, "L'Enseignement Mathématique - Revue internationale et la Commission internationale de l'enseignement mathématique (CIEM) - Notice historique", ICMI Bulletin 7 (1976) 29-34.
