Cavalieri, (Francesco) Bonaventura Born: 1598, Milan [Italy] Died: Nov. 30, 1647, Bologna, Papal States Italian mathematician who made developments in geometry that were precursors to integral calculus. As a boy Cavalieri joined the Jesuati, a religious order (sometimes called "Apostolic Clerics of St. Jerome") that followed the rule of St. Augustine and was suppressed in 1668 by Pope Clement IX. Euclid's works stimulated his interest in mathematics, and, after he met Galileo, Cavalieri considered himself a disciple of that great astronomer. By 1629, when he was appointed professor of mathematics of the University of Bologna, Cavalieri had completely developed his method of indivisibles, a means of determining the size of geometric figures similar to the methods of integral calculus. He delayed publishing his results for six years out of deference to Galileo, who planned a similar work. Cavalieri's work appeared in 1635 and was entitled Geometria Indivisibilibus Continuorum Nova Quadam Ratione Promota ("A Certain Method for the Development of a New Geometry of Continuous Indivisibles"). One of eight children, he was raised to join the Church and studied rhetoric in Piacenza and theology in Parma at Jesuit colleges. He entered the Jesuit order in 1602 and remained in the order throughout his entire life. The early years of his career were spent teaching mathematics, rhetoric, and theology at Jesuit colleges in Rome and Ravenna. Later he served as the apostolic preacher, a dignitary office instated in 1555 that is often commonly referred to as “preacher to the pope.” He also was an official of the Jesuit house in Rome and appears to have received patronage from a number of different individuals, to some of whom he dedicated various scientific works. Zucchi described his reflecting telescope and his invention of it in the treatise Optica philosophia experimentalis et ratione a fundamentis constituta , which was published in the 1650s. The landmark work reportedly influenced James Gregory and Sir Isaac Newton, both of whom built improved reflecting telescopes in the 1660s. In addition to a discussion of the telescope, Zucchi’s treatise included a description of his work with phosphors, from which he correctly concluded that such substances do not store light, but rather produce it. His interest in science surpassed just optical concerns, however, and he published two separate works on mechanics and machines before he died on May 21, 1670.

Correspondence: Response to Bob Guldin Michael Hirsch [from New Politics , vol. 9, no. 3 (new series), whole no. 35, Summer 2003] AFTER WRITING HOW "IT HARDLY NEEDS to be said," Bob Guldin says it anyway: "The only way progressives can gain any influence in the electoral arena is through unified mobilization. If, for example, a left formation commanded the allegiance of, say, one million voters nationwide, that would give the group significant clout." It also hardly needs saying that if grandma had wheels, she's be the cross-town bus. Incanting truisms is easy, but answering the tough question how do you effect that mobilization is hard. "Liberals Amid the Wreckage of the 2002 Elections" (New Politics #34) was a stab, or at least a pinprick, at answering the question. Appearing along with two unambiguously supportive pieces on the Greens one of which I solicited and edited it looked for common ground among some of the more astute liberals who, while not full-blooded independent socialists and far from ready to bolt Holy Mother Church, share deep criticisms of the Democratic Party, too. It was an effort to establish a frame of reference for identifying joint interests without letting party pedigrees do all the talking. As much as supporters of independent politics need to collaborate with the Greens a party whose candidates most New Politics editors, including myself, have backed they need to engage left liberal critics and their supporters, too. Because these make many of the same astute distinctions as do radicals: viz, that the national Democratic Party stands for nothing good; that it is a creature of professional operatives and big corporations; and that class struggles, not electoral contests, are the motor force of history.

Current Events 2005 Reunion O ur 2005 reunion was a total success! 513 attendees enjoyed the weekend at the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge. We toured the new National Consitution Center in Philly, and visited the USS NEW JERSEY, where we held our traditional memorial ceremony. Four USS BOSTON widows participated in this moving ceremony, which has become a staple part of our annual event. We also had a lovely cookout at Mermaid Lake, serenaded by a German oompahpah band that was fun. On Sunday we took two railroad cars on the Strassburg Railroad and experienced (complete with soot in my lap) the grand old steam engine days. Probably the highlight of the weekend was the Saturday night banquet, where a series of surprises delighted the Shipmates. His Excellency General George Washington was a special guest. He spoke eloquently of the contribution of the crews of our Continental Navy ships, in pursuit of freedom and liberty in 1776. In particular he praised the crew of the Gundalow BOSTON on Lake Champlain, and thanked all BOSTON crewmen since. (By the way, he said that he DID NOT stand up in the bow of the boat while crossing the Delaware. "Only a fool would stand in a small boat, particularly in December!" he said. The Plankowners in attendance had a special treat in store for them. We had obtained all remaining planks from the USS BOSTONs from the Naval Historical Center, and we presented pieces of plank to the Plankowners, who included CA-69, CAG-1, and SSN-703 Shipmates.
