His father, Francesco Guarini, was a great-grandson of the famous humanist, Guarino da Verona, who had founded the fortunes of the family at Ferrara in the fifteenth century. Battista's early life, divided between Padua and his native city, was mainly academic, until, in 1567, he entered the court of Alfonso II, the last Duke of Ferrara. He was employed as a diplomatist, notably in the unsuccessful negotiations (1574 and 1575) for obtaining for Alfonso the crown of Poland. Excepting for occasional intervals, during which he was employed by the Dukes of Savoy and Mantua, he spent most of his time in the service of the Duke of Ferrara, until the death of Alfonso (1597) and the devolution of the duchy to the Holy See . Later, Guarini frequented the courts of the Grand Duke of Tuscany and the Duke of Urbino. His last years were mostly passed at Rome and Venice, where he was surrounded by admirers and enjoyed great fame as a poet. Guarini's domestic life was stormy and unhappy. His daughter, Anna Guarini was murdered by her husband, Ercole Trotti, with the assistance of one of the poet's own sons. His own conduct towards the latter was the reverse of exemplary, and his whole career was embittered by his quarrels and perpetual lawsuits with them and others. Guarini's literary reputation is almost entirely based upon his "Pastor Fido" (The Faithful Shepherd), a Iyrical pastoral drama written to rival the "Aminta" of his friend and contemporary, Tasso. ABOUT THE REVIEWER James McQuillan is an architect and theoretician who spent a considerable time in practice spanning 1969 to 1982, which also saw periods in academia, acquiring an MA under Prof. Joseph Rykwert at the University of Essex, and spending a research year in Rome. In that period he was involved in conservation and leisure architecture as well as teaching at his old school of architecture in Dublin, and practising on his own account after 1978. In 1982 he returned to academia full-time, first by teaching in Arabia for four years and travelling in Europe. He completed his doctoral thesis on Guarini in 1991 at the University of Cambridge under Dr. Dalibor Vesely, and has conducted an international career of teaching and research in architecture and the humanities until the present. The Shroud, put in a reliquary, was placed on the magnificent altar, an Antonio Bertola work of art. Vittorio Amedeo II also took care of the realization of the Chapel's rich decorations. The place where the Shroud Chapel and the Cathedral are, boasts a very ancient Christian tradition: the baptismal Church, where the first known Turin bishop, St. Massimo (end of IV cent. - V cent.) made his eloquent homilies to the catechumens and administered the baptism sacrament, was situated there. In reality the ancient cathedral was made up of three contiguous and communicating basilicas, occupying a more extensive space than the present Cathedral. Si individuano una trentina di linee cugine. Di origine normanna, il suo impianto sul posto si può far risalire tra la fine del XIII e l’inizio del XIV secolo, quando già appare tra le famiglie più importanti della comunità solofrana. Proviene sicuramente dalla Puglia, tra cui il ramo risalente a Marcullo da Ariano (allora di Puglia) legato all’industria armentizia, quello del giudice Manerio (1301), quello che faceva capo a Giovan Pietro (uno degli indultati del 1341), il cui figlio Martino, alcuni decenni dopo, possedeva dei beni intorno a S. Agostino, al notaio Benedetto (1442) e al ramo che si era insediato in una cortina di S. Agata detta de li guarini . Nel 1442 ben sette frati di S. Agostino appartengono a questo ceppo da far pensare ad una feudalizzazione del Convento tenendo presente che esso era al centro dell’attività mercantile solofrana con le sue botteghe e con la protezione che dava a questa attività. Anche in seguito in questa istituzione in pratica non mancò mai un Guarino. Nel 1454 l'arcivescovo di Salerno concesse a Stefano il jus sulla cappella di S. Maria di Loreto, sita al casale Sorbo nei beni di Pietro.
