Back to Fermat's Last Theorem: Conference Report
August 11, 1995
There are several remarkable aspects to this conference, indicating a new trend in mathematics conferences generally: the majority of those in attendance are graduate students, although the lecturers include a good many of the tiny class of experts who, in a period of about 7 years, created the field of mathematics which made it possible for Wiles to construct his proof. The contemporary universe of mathematicians is in fact divided into "Those who do understand Grothendieck", and "Those who don't understand Grothendieck", with, naturally, several shades of grey: those who don't want to understand him, those who think they understand him, those who have never heard of him, those who may understand him but see no relevance of his ideas to their work, those, ( like myself), who wish they knew where he is because they are worried about him, ( he disappeared from the face of the map in 1993), and so forth. " I have never understood anything that Alexandre Grothendieck has done, and I haven't the least desire to do so."

(See old discussion at Talk:Alexander_Grothendieck/Major_topics Thank you, Charles Matthews for your great article and comments. Still, I think claiming that Grothendieck's work is of axiomatic kind is precise only when referring to certain period. There is nothing about axioms is Esquisse . It's normal that style changes with time and I think it would be right if you corected this.
You wrote: The style of the mathematics is very distant from Kronecker's, though. It is axiomatic, and claims descent from David Hilbert 's approach; as interpreted by Nicolas Bourbaki . Its influence spilled over...
I can't correct this because there is some error with this sentence. What means 'the mathematics'? Did you mean 'his mathematics of that period' which is OK for me or 'his mathematics' (which I consider as factual error) Ilya 18:13, 15 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Grothendieck Primes
A post on Geomblog reminds me of the following gem from the second of the AMS Notices articles on Alexander Grothendieck.
One striking characteristic of Grothendieck’s mode of thinking is that it seemed to rely so little on examples. This can be seen in the legend of the so-called “Grothendieck prime”. In a mathematical conversation, someone suggested to Grothendieck that they should consider a particular prime number. “You mean an actual number?” Grothendieck asked. The other person replied, yes, an actual prime number. Grothendieck suggested, “All right, take 57.” All mathematicians should make sure to keep this story in mind for the next time someone asks them to help balance their checkbook. Real, breathing, cutting edge mathematics has very little to do with the kind of tedious number-crunching that is standard fare at high-school level.
